Excelsior Grand Hotel
Ranked #18 of 29 Hotels in Amalfi
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 30 July 2009

We stayed at the Grand Hotel Excelsior as part of an Amalfi Coast tour. The hotel sits high above Amalfi with exceptional views. We had a room right down the bottom of the hotel, through little passages under hanging vines and lemon trees with football sized lemons. We had a huge balcony at the side which came in very handy for drying our clothes. Our room was tiled, clean, spacious and airey with French doors opening onto magic views. The pool was a bit too cool to swim in April but was terrific for lounging around in the late afternoon after a day exploring. Breakfasts and dinners at the hotel were in a beautifully tiled restaurant. The food was typically Italian – veal dishes, salad, bread and wine. The staff was excellent, friendly and always smiling – quite different to many of the other places we stayed in Italy. The free shuttle bus at the door was a bonus. I’d recommend this Hotel to anyone who loves fabulous view, a quiet location, friendly staff and beautiful, cool rooms.

Amalfi is an excellent base to explore Capri and Positano by ferry.

The view is captivating in this outdated old hotel. It is a pitty that it is not kept well. Breakfast is the cheapest quality of roll and jam and coldcut that you can find in Italy. Beach towels for which you leave a deposit are rags. But the view is the one thing that is arguably the best in Amalfi.

I wish they cared more about this masterpiece of lands.

My Partner and i stayed in this hotel for 5 days in June. On arrival the staff were very friendly and helpful. Rooms were a nice size with lots of storage and decent size balcony with beautiful views of mountains and further down the sea. Breakfast was lovely too, not much to choose from but they had lots of different cakes and pastrys which we enjoyed.
There was a computer in the lobby with free internet use which was handy!
However getting around without a car we found quite difficult at first. When booking the hotel we were under the impression that it wasn't too far from Amalfi town and Ravello where our friends were staying. Ravello was actually about 35 mins from the hotel and to get down to the town it was 15 minutes by car. Taxis are very expensive- 30 euros for a 10 minute journey. So therefore if you are not renting a car you need to rely on the free shuttle bus or the local buses which we found very punctual but slightly restrictive.
All in all a lovely hotel and would reccomend it but obviously would be easier with a car so you get to see more.

Stayed uphill Amalfi at this hotel. Breathtaking view, friendly staff. Eat a la carte at Tato, where Francesco, the chef, and Carmine, your serving friend, will spoil you.
Hotel, an elderly lady, playing jazz and other melodies from 60ies, 70ies, but comfortable trustworthy etc. Forget her wrinkles and enjoy!

My boyfriend and I were all excited about finally visiting the Amalfi Coast, until we visited the Excelsior Grand Hotel. After a long flight into Naples Airport, we decided to catch the shutlle bus to Sorrento and from there the Sita Bus into Amalfi. The views are breathtaking! :) The drivers assured us that the total time journey from Naples to Amalfi would last 2 and a half hours. After 4 long hours we were finally got to Amalfi. We called the Excelsior Grand Hotel to get directions to the hotel, and the receptionist was extremely rude and unhelpful. The hotel is located on the top most part of the hill. A cab ride there would cost 35Euros. So after asking the locals we got on the Sita Bus to 'Porgiello' which stops right infront of the hotel. From the time we got to the hotel to the very end of our stay - the service / food / quality / cleanliness of the hotel was rubbish!!!! The receptionists have no idea what good customer service skills are!!!! The food is way overpriced with not much of a selection. The breakfast only included - scrambed eggs, croissants and coffee out of a machine!!!!!!!! To top it of, we asked the concierge 'Anne' what she would recommend we did while in Amalfi. She recommended we go to the hotel beach which by the way costs10euros per person per day. Meanwhile we caught her going to a nearby beach that was free of charge!!!! The pool is filthy and very small. When it comes to cleanliness, this is the first hotel I have ever been to in my life that does not change the bathrrom towels or bed linen - but instead they hang them back up !!!! The decor is old and faded. The only thing this hotel has going for it is the views - which every other hotel has in Amalfi. For the same amount of money stay at the MirAmalfi which is much more convinient to get into town and also worth your money.

NB: The photos you might see on the websites are very deceiving as this hotel is extremely high on a hill and if you want to explore Amalfi at your own leisure this hotel is VERY inconvinient .

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights as part of a 4 night tour from Rome. Perhaps we were spoilt with our accommodation in Sorrento but we were generally disappointed with Excelsior Grand. Please don't allow them to put you on Level -1. The rooms are separated from the hotel and not nice at all. You get no views of Amalfi and the walk and lift to your room is a pain not to mention the musky smells as you exit the lift. After complaining we were told that we may be shifted to the Hotel for our second night. This happened and we did get a lovely view of Amalfi. However both rooms we stayed in definitely need some long overdue renovations. Also we were one of a few couples that were made to dine for the evening meal in their breakfast room which was very cold and had an atmosphere to match. Again after complaining and thanks to the cocktail barman Moreese, who was incredibly professional and friendly (not at all like the rest of the staff), we dined on the restaurant balcony the last night which was so much better. The swimming pool also was filthy and reflected generally the point that the whole hotel needs money spent on it. Our stay at Amalfi had been eagerly anticipated and we will visit again but would never stay at this place again

Our room was quite standard but our balcony was huge with this incredible view. The staff at the hotel is very nice and helpful. A special reward to the Maitre d'hôtel Antonio who works in the morning for the breakfast and come back at night for the dinner. What a fantastic person. He is always smiling and ready to offer you the best service. He goes from one table to the other to ask people if eveything is ok. Since the hotel is very high on the cliff, the hotel bus is very helpful.
