Located right in the centre of Amalfi (just off the square), this is a great little hotel. Not great to look at externally but more than makes up for it inside. It was modern, clean and plenty of aircon. We booked directly with Agnese at the hotel via months before and it was so simple. Agnese is very efficient, helpful and friendly and you couldn't get better customer service. All the staff were very friendly and excellent. We only had one problem while we there which was the aircon one morning. However, Agnese got it sorted that afternoon with no fuss!!
We flew into Naples airport and then travelled by car to Amalfi which is about 40 miles. Takes a while by car (1 hour 15 mins) because as soon as you get to the coast the roads are narrow and winding. This goes on for about 15 miles and I would recommend travel tablets to anyone with a weak stomach!! Would recommend a sat nav as the directions are a bit confusing on leaving the car park at Naples and the road signs are not that clear on route. When you arrive at Amalfi look out for the road on the right (under an arch before you get to a small tunnel). There is a 'no entry sign' and usually a policeman on duty. Just tell him you are staying at the hotel and he will let you through. Please note that the road is closed early in the morning (7.45am - 9ish) and at lunchtime (12pm - 1.30pm) beause of the school so if you arrive during these times you will have to park up and wait. The road is only narrow and runs through the square and the town so watch out for the shoppers as there are no pavements. About 50 yards from the entrance look out for the traffic lights up on the wall. The road is only big enough for one car so you may have to wait for 5 mins or so. When turn green, drive up through the town (about 200 metres) and you will see a garage on the right with 3 green doors, this is the hotels garage and where you need to park. The attendants will park for you. You will then need to walk back towards the square and the entrance to the hotel is via a small alleyway about 4 metres from the traffic lights by the square. Make sure that you give Agnese the details of your car when you arrive.
The hotel only offers a basic continental breakfast (i,e, doesn't do lunch or dinner) but it really doesnt matter as there are many cafe's and restaurants within a minutes walk. Amalfi is small but friendly and vibrant and there is a lovely cathedral in the square which is well worth a look round (Eur2.50). Only downside is that the church's clock chimes the hour which can be a bit annoying in the morning!! The port is small but they do run boat trips to other towns, coast tours and trips to Capri which takes about 1 hr 20mins. You can get a list of the boat times from the hotel. Amalfi is built into the mountain so everywhere is quite steep with numerous quaint little alleyways with steps so if you have mobility issues, this may not be the right place for you.
Pompei is only about an hours drive back towards Naples and is well worth visiting. If driving don't take the first turning towards Pompei Est (east) wait to the next main turning and follow the historical signs. Be careful to only park in the blue marked bays on the road (you will need a ticket) but best to park in the car park which is about 50 metres from the entrance to the ruins. Ignore the people from the tourist centres along the road as they will try to rent you a recorder (with ear piece) and a map for Eur10. Best to pay at the entrance (Eur6) where you will get a free map. The Pompei site is very big so allow at least 4-5 hours to get around it. There are bus tours available to the volcano but maybe too much for one day.
Ravello (where most of the Italian footballers get married - and Gary Lineker!!) is about 5 miles drive from Amalfi and worth a visit for the great views.
On way back to airport it is best to plan carefully and leave plenty of time. We followed the satnav and whilst we found the airport ok, it took us through naples and took 2 hours! I am sure that there must have been another way around the city. Also, re leaving for the airport, it is very important to note the times the Amalfi road is closed for the school kids as you will not be able to move your car.
All in all, a lovely convenient location, great hotel and wonderful customer service. Would thoroughly recommend.
