“Grand Hotel Salerno May 2012”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2013

We stayed here in May of 2012. We walked into the hotel one evening and asked if they had a room starting the following day. They showed us an ocean view room that looked good to us. When we came back the next day, the room wasn't ready so they put us in a much larger and grander room with a huge deck and views of the ocean, city, and mountains. Looking out the window was like looking at a post card morning and night. We did not utilize the pool or spa facilities or eat at the ristorante, so I can't comment on those. But everyone we encountered at the hotel was very helpful to us and the room was very spacious and clean. I believe that we were upgraded because, looking at their website, the room that we had is at the top of the price range and we didn't pay anywhere near that.
This hotel was not our first choice as I had reservations about staying here after reading the reviews. However, we had issues at a B & B were we originally booked and decided to give this hotel a try. We were glad we did as we enjoyed it very much.

I had to bring to the attention of management the unsanitary conditions of my room and bathroom.
I have photographic evidence of heavy black mold around a bathroom extractor.

I was offered a partial refund and I told the management to donate it to a local orphanage; they responded that they could not do so because of Italian tax law, but they could give the refund to me.
So far, the hotel and Ms. Iannone in sales, has failed to do so.

We were not expecting much since this was an unexpected stop for the night in Salerno. I was pleasantly surprised. Salerno is not the nicest place in Italy, but this hotel was a gem. The room was huge with a lovely view of the water and TWO bathrooms!! The staff was so friendly and eager to help with whatever we asked of them. Breakfast in the morning was delicious and included in the price which was very reasonable (I think less than 100 euros). It was close to the train station (a 5 minute walk), right on the water, the beach was nice. I definately was not expecting to find such a nice hotel, with no reservations ans so reasonable.

Had a pleasant stay here for thirteen nights whilst working in Salerno.
After not really looking forward to my stay here after reading many negative things, it turned out to be ok.
The cleanliness of the room was immaculate, clean bedding, towels etc everyday.
The food from the restaurant was excellent and I did not see the same thing twice, breakfast was great with a large selection to choose from.
It's not a holiday destination but this time of year Salerno is beautiful with its Christmas lights.
Parking is a no no, very expensive.
The staff were ok but lacked a little in communication, not many smiles.
The spa looked nice although I never tried it, and if you want to use the pool you need a swim cap.
From your room it can be quite noisy at night because of the tiled floors throughout, I got used to it after a few days though.
The hotel is very busy with people passing through on a daily basis.
My only negatives about this hotel would be the lack of any English tv and the Internet was expensive and absolutely rubbish in the room in fact it didn't work, I had to go down stairs to the bar to get any signal at all, not ideal if your here on business.

Stayed 1 night, good value for price, but nothing special.
Breakfast nothing to write home about.
OK to stay 1 night. Bathroom curtain was smelly.
Iron and ironing board couldn't be provided: big disappointment...

This hotel has been built less than five years ago...the famous Italian architect who designed it wanted the building to look like a cruise ship. The building is very nice, the room very big and confortable (the sea view ones not the others facing the back parking) but the hotel is poorly managed with a lack of personell to run efficently such a big hotel.
Even if it is just 5min away from the railways station, this hotel hasn't a great location if you want to walk around the city.

ps: when it is open, the rooftop bar is spectacular

I stayed in this hotel last year in October, and this year in November. While it was not an overly welcoming and pleasant place last year, it managed to get much worse since... There is nothing "Grand" about this hotel. Not even the location, which for "Grand Hotels" usually means city center, while this one is a 20 minutes walk from the center.

My room, although a specific non-smoker room, smelt of stale smoke, the beds were narrow, and the furniture needs an overhaul. At least the bathroom was reasonably clean. There was no electric kettle (something I find in almost all hotels even if they have no star at all), no free bottle of water, and the "air condition/heating" combination only noisily blew air into the room that was neither cooled nor heated no matter which settings were chosen on the control panel. There were disposable plastic cups in the bathroom for teeth brushing instead of glasses, very untypical for a hotel of this category.

Internet connection by Wifi is somehow available, but there is only one router and the signal strength is very low - I could only pick up the signal when I sat directly behind the door. No connection was possible when sitting at the desk or on the bed. Plus, it is really expensive (5 Euro for 1 hour). What a horrible experience in a hotel which claims four stars, in the year 2012...

The staff is of limited friendliness. At the reception desk they do their work, although without passion, and I was once even able to get a short smile. The girl at the bar is friendly, but I feel that this only weakly compensates for half-empty glasses of beer and the very limited choice of overpriced sandwiches from their list of snacks (only those labeled with "si", the others are "no have!"). The hotel has a pool for those traveling with a swimming cap (are we back to the Seventies???), others must buy one because "no cap, no swim!" (original statement from the staff there).
If you arrive by car, be prepared that you can park in a "public" parking lot behind the hotel, but there is no reduced rate for hotel guests, and you can only prepay, for a maximum of six hours. The fee is due also on Sundays and over night - a major pain for everyone who might consider to sleep longer than six hours. The hotel apparently does not care about this issue, and the staff does not offer alternatives.
One massive disappointment was the breakfast buffet, which was excellent last year but has since been reduced to the standard of a cheap hostel. Fresh fruit has been replaced by cheap canned fruit salad and preserves, scrambled eggs were dry and had a taste as if made from preserved eggs or powder (plus, the container remained empty for more than ten minutes before someone from the staff started to care about it), no sausages, the selection of bread went down to one sort of buns and toast, cheese and ham were of low quality. It is beyond me why the hotel decided to cut on the only thing that was a positive surprise during my stay last year.

Taken together, the hotel does only live up to its four stars when it comes to prices. Room quality and cleanliness, staff friendliness and competence, internet access, parking, and breakfast are all not more than two stars maximum. I will not stay there again, and I will not recommend this hotel to anyone I like.

Room Tip: The best rooms are those that are in a different hotel...
