“Amazing start to our honeymoon!”
Reviewed 14 June 2010

We booked the Parco dei Principi hotel on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Sorrento. Upon arrival, we were amazed by the spectacular view from our private balcony, the large spacious room and generous closet space (something we've found rare in most of europe). The luxurious buffet breakfast which was included each morning was the perfect start to our days of site-seeing or relaxing by the water. We found the location the perfect spot for day trips to Mt. Vesuvius and Pompeii, and a full day Amalfi Drive (including Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello). The hotel staff was very helpful in booking the day trip and even managed to find us a discount.
The private beach and saltwater pools were another great luxury loved. We also enjoyed walking in the evenings from the hotel into the city for dinner, and then returning home to our balcony to take in live music and a amazing view from our balcony. It was an amazing start to our honeymoon!

Great location and great access to the beach, but the rooms, lobby, restaurant and hallways seemed bleak. With ceramic tiles everywhere including the guest rooms, and very little decor and furnishings, the hotel seemed very empty and bleak. Everything echoed. The staff was good and the grounds were great.

Agree that I was expecting "outstanding" and got nothing near that! Plus... breakfast on the patio with stunning ocean view was fabulous...great selection & wonderful ambience! Beach area, small but loved sun loungers with "sun shade" to be able to read with a small adjustable shade over your face...great idea!! but space to move loungers extremely limited (so when you ran out of sun you were hooped!). Rooms, decent size for Europe; clean...balcony facing gardens VERY small! and what is with the barking dogs??? YIkes... Negative was the staff at front desk. TERRIBLE !!! When we checked in after a long hot day of traveling from Rome, we had to wait over 1/2 hour while some other italian guests were having a big fight with the front desk staff. Now, any other hotel would have attempted to move them aside & check them in... but not here. We waited painfully while they argued forever on whatever problem there was. Then its our turn. Ok, can't seem to find our reservations, so takes another 20 min. or so to locate that. Really? How many locations do you keep reservations?? On check out we almost could not leave because they were arguing that we owed them money (we had prepaid & diligently spent $00.00 at this property as we didn't seem too impressed with our dining options, etc). We kept telling them we had prepaid (which we did not have to but thought it would save us time & trouble when we arrived in Europe)... and they were nearly insistent that we hadn't paid. So frustrating as they would only sometimes speak in English & we did not have a strong enough command of Italian to know what they were saying amongst themselves... :( All to say, that they were not the least bit friendly or thankful that we had selected their hotel in our visit and i would NOT recommend to anyone that they stay at this property. This is NOT worth the extra $$$ that you're paying especially in comparison to the fabulous properties (and much less costly) options we selected in Italy, Greece and Spain. PS: Best deal in town.... Hydrofoil or high speed ferry in/out of Sorrento... super cheap & fast!!

14 of us booked this gorgeous hotel but felt the staff were rude (on beach and at pool), drinks prices were outrageous, bar closed far too early, hairdryer didn't work in our room. Sadly we all felt robbed and/or cheated.

What a shame as it is the most beautiful building and setting!

I stayed at this hotel for 5 nights and I really enjoyed it. The view of the Sea and Vesuvius are amazing. However, I agree with some of the reviews, this hotel is not for everyone. The rooms and halls are stark and sparce but you have to appreciate the architect's design to appreciate the ambience. The rooms are quite large and very clean. The bathrooms are older but functional. I was disappointed that I could not get a room with a sea view because there was a large group booked at the hotel. However, the view from the veranda made up for not having a room with a view. It is quite a walk into the center of Sorrento and the shuttle only runs up to 6:30 p.m. It is an expensive cab ride (over 20 euros back to the hotel). Unlike some other reviews, I found the gardens to be maintained quite well and they are very beautiful. Overall a very good experience if you don't mind the distance into town and unique design.

The rooms were clean and bright, the balcony was large with a wonderful view. We visited in October, and it was still quite warm. However, if you wanted to sit on the terrace during the hot part of the day, there was no umbella or shelter from the sun. Also, even though they offered a shuttle to 'town' - you were dropped off 4 blocks from the main square (quite a distance if you have limited walking ability). During our stay, the shuttle service was extremely curt-tailed (2 hours in the morning, and 2 hours in the evening) - we became stuck in town and had to walk back to the hotel. Quite a distance if you are not planning on walking. The web site did not mention that hours would be shortened in the off season. Free breakfast buffet was excellent, however, to eat a meal in the dining room for dinner was quite pricey.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Five-star accommodation and a prime location sat high on the ancient rampart of tufa, the Parco dei Principi is a testament to the timeless creativity of Gio Ponti, one of the most enlightened advocates of Italian architecture of the 20th century.Between the blue sea of Sorrento Coast and the lush greenery of the botanical gardens, Paul Leopold of Bourbon, the princes of Cortchacow and the entourage of the Russian aristocracy fell in love with this incomparable natural scenery, giving it a solemn historical heritage.Minimal atmosphere and space characterises the 96 rooms with original furnishings designed by Gio Ponti and customized specifically for the Hotel: the famous headboard-beds (1948), toilet set 'Vanity' with circular mirrors (1950), the chair 'Lightweight' (Cassina, 1952) and large fitted wardrobes. A variety of ceramic floors - as many as rooms - in shades of blue and white, in antique Majolica D'Agostino from Salerno, to reflect the colours of the sea and sky of Sorrento: moons, circles, triangles, stars and leaves are also used to tell a different story in every room.At the Restaurant Gio Ponti, a spectacular window over the Gulf of Naples and its islands, the day starts with a grand breakfast. Through striking tunnels in the rock, you arrive at the private beach or at the equipped solarium on the cliff. The pier is home during the summer months to the restaurant Poggio Siracusa where you can enjoy the fresh offerings of the sea accompanied by the sounds of the waves below.Among the horizon, the ancient oaks and the rare trees essences of the enormous botanical park, there is a seawater swimming pool designed by Gio Ponti as 'a mirror of water to wood nymphs'.To restore harmony to the body and spirit, guests can access the Fitness & Beauty Center of the Hotel, the charming majolica rooftop terrace with a view, and the marbled terrace of Villa Cortchacow dating back to the eighteenth century, on which the first ballerina performed to the Court of St. Petersburg.Since 2012, the lobby, with the incredible view of the Gulf has hosted the 'Museum of the Opera', an exhibition of original drawings and furniture in the rooms and in the common areas that have marked the history of Italian design. The business center of the hotel offers several meeting rooms with complimentary Wi-Fi and innovative technology: from the classic style of Sedowa hall with a terrace overlooking the sea, to the most modern modular Leonardo hall, surrounded by the garden Bourbon, with a seat capacity of 350. The outdoor areas offer a pleasant alternative for coffee breaks, lunches and dinners.Within the enchanting scenery of Monti Lattari sloping terraces lined with citrus, Parco dei Principi is an excellent location for pleasant walks through the typical craft shops and luxury shopping streets in the center of Sorrento, and for excursions to the nearby Amalfi Coast, the island of Capri and the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. ... more   less
