“Hotel Il Nido”
Reviewed 27 December 2007

I can't add to much about this hotel, since it has been reviewed a whole lot, but I did like it. I was not a bit fan of the location, because we got back from a train trip to Herculaneum at just the wrong time, and had to wait for about 50 minutes before the next bus trip (we did wander around and got a gelato while we waited, but we were pretty tired), but that is my only complaint.

I had read the food was good there, but I didn't really believe it, so we went into Sorrento for our first 2 meals and weren't overly impressed (Sorrento is very touristy). On the third night we were too tired to head back to town, and ate at the restaurant, and I was impressed. So impressed that we ate there on out last night there as well.

Order the salt fish; not only is it tasty, it a bit of a dinner show as well.

Stayed 3 nights. Great food in the restaurant with very good prices. Shuttle bus was always on time and quick and efficient. Wonderful views of the bay from the balcony. When we needed to get back to the train station early (5:30am) in the morning for our departure, we were too early for the shuttle - the manager was gracious enough to take us there directly and not take compensation. Great location to visit the amalfi coast - buses stop not far from the front of the hotel along the main road.

  • Liked — Great restaurant on site
  • Disliked — Only thing we didn't like is that it was a few miles outside of town

My sister-in-law and I stayed for three nights at Il Nido in November. We found this hotel to be the best hotel of all we had stayed in all of Italy...and it was the cheapest! The views were breathtaking, well worth the 15 drive up the hill. The rooms were very clean and serviced every day.

The shuttle driver was extremely reliable and also helpful. The breakfast was fantastic with a selection of both HOT and cold food.

The family who own this hotel are very hardworking and extremely friendly!!! We even had to cancel our last night due to personal reasons and the owner was OK with this. We found them to be more than accommodating with every request. On our last morning we had to catch a very early bus to Naples so we asked the owner to book us a taxi but he insisted on driving us himself. This was typical of the service that we received.

We have already said that we would certainly stay at Il Nido again if we came back to Sorrento.

  • Liked — Definitely the view!

Il Nido, translates as "The Nest", was just that. Perched atop a hill about a 10 minute drive (an event in itself on their shuttle) from Sorrento city-center (with an amazing view of Vesuvius and the coast), the hotel feels like a comfy nest to come home to after a long flight (or walk) where you can get a good meal and feel warm and safe.

The lobby is on what we would call the 3rd floor (which is the floor that is accessible from the street), and there is a decent sized elevator that has an open glass view to take you down to your floor. The hotel has a dining room for breakfast (included) and dinner (recommended) that has a large view and outside terrace of the coast. The also appears to be a building top sunning spot (building left to the main building), but it wasn't open as you might expect in off season.

I travelled with my family who spent 20 euros extra for a "room with a view", and I have to say, at 70 euros a night I think we got the better deal. We didn't have a direct view of the coast as we were located on the side of the building, but we had our own little patio where much of the coastline (and Vesuvius) was still in view. The room was very clean and comfortable (typical Itlaian style though with large "kitchen towels" for bath towels and two twins pushed together to make the double), and the bathrooms were large and modern. Showers are single occupant only, and if you are on the larger side, be aware you may be "squegeed" getting in and out. :)

The included breakfast was fabulous for us, and we counted ourselves lucky to have eggs at breakfast. They served Blood Orange (red in color) juice, milk, and water, and they had an automatic machine that a child could use to make a coffee, cappucino, hot chocolate or some other hot drinks I wasn't familiar with. There was alwasy a wide variety of pastries available (try the specialty of the region that is a croissant in a horn shape filled with sweetened ricotta, very nice), hams, cereals, toast, etc. (also grab some of the little packages of cookies to snack on for during the day, they're lovely). All with the most amazing view!

Dinner was always very good and reasonably priced. Do note ,as it was a surprise to us, that they just add the tab to your hotel bill. I'm sure they can charge separately, but it was a little disconcerting at first to not SEE what you were being charged at the time. All prices were listed on the menu, though, and at the end, our meal price was very fair and accurate, so don't worry. Try the Lemon cake if available (oh so delicious!), and their seafood dishes are probably their best. We ate at their restaurant every night for the 3 nights we were there.

We found the staff perfectly friendly (I suppose you get what you give), knowledgable, and helpful. Sometimes you had to check in the lounge to find them during kind-of off hours, but otherwise we had no issues.

All in all, we REALLY liked this hotel and would go back in a heartbeat.

  • Liked — The amazing views and the clean, modern rooms.
  • Disliked — Working around the shuttle times and meeting places (though it was perfectly reasonable).

After re-reading some other reviews of this hotel, I wonder if I stayed at the same place.

First the good news. The views are great, the rooms are clean and the shuttle runs to the town centre like clockwork (the driver of the shuttle was very pleasant).

The bad news is that the hospitality is absolutely nothing like that described by some of the other reviewers.

A few examples may help. We saw three staff and a chambermaid the whole time we were there. There was no friendliness and every request was met with a sigh of 'well, if I must' type of attitude.

The owner (I assume it was the gentleman who booked us in) barely grunted a greeting and attempts to engage him in anything more than a exchange of information was futile. I would expect this in a larger hotel (although wouldn't have returned), but in a place which prides itself on hospitality, it was very disappointing.

The hot breakfast dish (included in the rate) consisted of scrambled egg which was completely cold each morning (we tried 8.15am and 9.15 am). A meagre supply of eggs had been left in a serving tray which would normally be heated. This was was switched off permanently so the eggs got very cold very quickly and were not replaced during the whole breakfast duration.

Cold drinks consisted of tap water or a sickly sweet soft drink (no fresh juice, or even juice from a carton). Bread for toast was stale. Some mornings there was no milk for cereal at all and this had to be requested (assuming you could find a member of staff and didn't mind a wait). Coffee was self service from a machine.

The hotel virtually closes down during the day and does not serve lunch. Attempts to get a coffee at 10am were eventually successful, though we had to work out for ourselves how to get the machine up and running after the waitress couldn't be bothered to help.

The rooms were adequate for a 3 star hotel, nothing more. The handle on the balcony door kept coming off, the safe was barely large enough to contain a wallet and the only toiletries available were a bar of hand soap. The remote for the small portable TV (which was wasn't usable without a remote) had batteries missing. We asked at reception and were treated as if this was a real problem for the owner to fix.

Internet in reception was free most of the time, though it was necessary to ask reception for a printed ticket every time which expired after an hour.

If you want an standard 3 star hotel with good views and a very reasonable price (we paid 80 Euro per night) and can put up with the shuttle trip into town (hourly most of the time) and the really awful breakfast, then give this place a try.

If you want anything other than surly, bored, uncaring staff (apart from the driver, who seemed genuinely helpful) then look elsewhere.

  • Liked — Views, friendly shuttle bus driver, cheap
  • Disliked — Awful breakfast, unfriendly and surly staff

My mother and I traveled to Italy this fall and with all the hotels we booked I was the most surprised with Il Nido. It was wonderful. We were picked up right from the train station by the hotel bus and brought right to the hotel. As we entered our room, which was 60 euro a night, we were in awe by the view. We couldn't have been happier. We then sat on the balcony for dinner and still just couldn't believe the view. The service was true Italian hospitality. Perfect.

We were also happy to find that the hotel bus/shuttle was very covenant to use. Other hotels in the area had you use city buses to get a round and from what I heard from other travelers, that was not ideal.

After staying at this hotel for 3 nights we had to take a bus at 6:30am to Rome. We knew that the hotel was not responsible to get us to the bus station that early in the morning, so when we asked for help with a taxi reservation and Il Nido offered to drive us...we just could believe it, the owner actual drove us himself.

I highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It was so great!

Great hotel. Located high atop of a hill with incredible views of the Mediterranean. Super shuttle service to the Sorrento. Clean, comfortable, great breakfast, with computer and internet available, and very well priced. We had a nice room for our family of five. Parking is free.
