“Thank You Dino and Family!”
Reviewed 6 October 2008

My wife and I booked Il Nido based upon reviews here and it was everything it was billed as, and more. Comfortable rooms, Beautiful views, very good food - Dino's brother is the chef, very accomodating hosts, mystified as to when Dino sleeps, friendly and efficient bus service although the hourly schedule could be slightly inconvenient, all for a very reasonable rate particularly considering how much other hotels in the area go for.

Il Nido is an excellent choice if you view Sorrento as a central base from which to day tour the numerous sites - Amalfi, Ravello, Positano, Capri, Pompeii, Ercolano, Vesuvius, Naples and Sorrento. The hotel is convenient with shuttle service to Sorrento for boats, trains and busses, with one of the Positano busses stopping right by the hotel (make sure you get on the right Positano-Sorrento bus that goes via Sant'Agata).

We also found ourselves eating dinner most evenings in the excellent restaurant. Although the area has very many wonderful (and expensive) restaurants after a tiring day of touring and lunch at one of the fine restaurants we found ourselves happy to relax and have a wonderful dinner at Il Nido. The food was consistently very good, and the friendly atmosphere engendered such camaraderie amongst the guests, that four couples joined tables on our final evening for an impromptu road-family dinner.

For those few less than stellar reviews listed here, all I can suggest is either you stayed at a different Il Nido or your expectation for accomodations and service, particularly at this price, are wildly unrealistic.

While the room itself was nothing special - very basic, standard amenities - it was clean and quiet. The real value in this hotel is its ideal location, perched on a hillside overlooking the gorgeous bay below. The balcony affords you an unparalleled view of the quintessential Italian coastal sunrise/sunset. It's also a great pleasure to be able to eat the buffet breakfast they provide out on the hotel restaurant's balcony. Surprisingly, this place serves the best hot chocolate I've ever had anywhere in the world! The staff here is very helpful, and provides free shuttle rides to and from the local train station, and other established pick-up/drop-off locations throughout the town. If you're going to stay in Sorrento, this hotel is unbeatable for its value. I highly recommend!

  • Liked — The fantastic view.
  • Disliked — I didn't like the shower; it had a weird, inconvenient set-up.

We were very pleased with our stay at the Hotel Il Nido. I choose Il Nido based on reviews and comments I read on Trip Advisor. We were not disappointed. Our room was spacious, very clean, with an excellent bed. We had a room with a balcony view of the bay and Mt. Vesuvius which was spectacular. The staff was courteous and helpful. The food was excellent. We ate there every night but one during our one week stay because we liked the variety and the quality. And the price for both our room and the food was very reasonable. The Shuttle service was dependable and courteous. It is a bit inconvient to be tied to the shuttle time scheudule but considering all the advantages and benefits of staying at the Il Nido, we would certainly enthusiastically recommend it.

This is a beautiful hotel with great service and location in Sorrento. The owners are so hospitable and service oriented that you would think you are part of the family. The hotel has shuttle service every hour to the main city (10 min ride) which was great. As well, the local bus route for the towns of Positano and Amalfi stop in front of this hotel which turned out to be a convenience. My wife & I are going back most definately. To the Il Nido owners --- Thanks a million.

We spent three nights there and it was just the best you can expect. It is a quiet place where from it's easy to access Capri (boat), Pompei (train), Amalfi (bus) and even Naples (boat).
We arrived by car after a 10-hour drive, put it in the parking and did not have to worry about it until departure thanks to the convenient shuttle schedule.
The first thing you notice is an outstanding view of the bay of Naples (photo). Then, you feel welcomed as a guest and not as a client. The very friendly owner (this is a family run business) speaks good english, good french and was a great resource for planning our activities.
The service was excellent (when does the owner sleep remains a mystery!), the room impeccable, the breakfast a feast, the internet access free, the shuttle always on time.
We had two dinners there and the food was excellent and of good value.
Certainly a place where we hope to go again and which we recommend.

Pleased to say all the reviews are correct, this is a cost effective little gem in a very expensive place.

It's out of town (nearly 5K) but has a bus every hour so that has little impact and the view, price and service more than make up for it.

The staff are excellent, going out of there way to provide what you need. The food in the restaurant is good value and the breakfasts are superb.

Few down sides, but a lack of pool should be noted for those that like to spend holidays beside one (not a problem for us)

Sorrento itself is lovely, plenty of great restaurants (we would have to recommend O Canonico for its food and wine list) and you must go to 'Vineriabollicine' a fantastic wine bar where the barman can recommend the perfect wine from whatever you ask for.

So in summary, its a great little hotel allowing you an affordable base to enjoy the many delights of the region

We found the Il Nido an excellent choice. The room was adequate and clean, the view from its balcony magnificent. The service was above average. I noted in other reviews some complaints about a lack of friendliness. Certainly no one could complain about Dino at the front desk, also the general factotum of the hotel, who could not be more helpful and friendly. I think some of the staff do not speak English and are more embarrassed than aloof when spoken to. Most of the staff are members of the family. As an example of his helpfulness, I told him I did not have an ethernet cable with me and he gave me a brand new one. When I went to return it when checking out and asked to buy it, he told me with a big genuine smile to keep it as a little gift because I might need it at other places.

The restaurant was excellent and reasonable, and like some others, we ate there for the three nights we stayed. I only wish that the shuttle schedule had been more frequent, but it was always on time. We'd be happy to return. (2 adults)
