This was an excellent choice. Rooms are not luxurious, but are clean and spacious. Staff were very friendly and helpful. They rustled up a carafe of wine for us when we arrived on the first evening of our honeymoon - which we enjoyed on our balcony with great views of Sorrento. The location was a definite plus - it's away from the noise and bustle of Sorrento, and meals are taken on a terrace with even better views than from our balcony. We ate dinner there a couple of times and the food was good - if not the best we ate while we were in Italy. We found the bus very convenient for getting into Sorrento - though it may not suit everyone as it doesn't run all day. Overall definitely good value for money and highly recommended.

My friend and I stayed at Il Nido for 3 nights in early September 2005. The positives include that it was very economical (dealt with proprietor directly through email and paid 80 euros/night), the bathroom was clean and one of the larger ones we had in Italy, and there is free internet.

There were, however, several drawbacks. The hotel is so far away from everything and far away from the center of town. You really feel like you are in a deserted area. If you depend on the hotel-run shuttle, you must leave for town by 10:30 or wait until 3:30 to catch the shuttlle again. The shuttle only runs once per hour and quits at 11:30 at night. Since we arrived fairly late on for our first night's stay, we ended up taking the shuttle into town but had to take a taxi back, which cost 30 euros for a few mile drive. Walking is not on option since there are no lights on the country roads, it is very steep, and the 2-lane highway constantly has motorcycles and cars passing at highspeeds around curves. We tried to walk to the only nearby business which was a restaurant down the dirt road and were nearly sideswiped by the many scooters and cars passing by in the dark (no sidewalks).

The staff was not very friendly. We tried to smile and ask them a few questions and they seemed to be very cold and unwelcoming. Although they did provide a train and bus schedule and cursery map of the town center on arrival there was no map of how far away they were from town or how to find your way back on public transport when needed. The bus schedule was from 2004 so there was no way to know if it was even still accurate if we wanted to use it. We constantly felt as thought the staff were watching our every move and staring at us any time we entered or exited through the front door. Although the staff spoke fluent English, I felt as thought they looked down at Americans.

I found many things near the hotel and in Sorrento in general, to be quite dirty and run-down, despite the beautiful ocean surroundings. For example, there was a little patio owned by the hotel to the left of the main building and this was just filled with old broken down chairs and pieces of scrap metal and wood. There were many eyesores like this in the surrounding neighborhoods and the hotel is near homes/condo residences in need of repair. Had Il Nido had a pool or kept up the surrounding grounds it would make the play a little more pleasant and welcoming.

I have travelled for many years throughout Europe and didn't find Sorrento or Il Nido to be too special. Our day trip to Capri was mich nicer and had it been a little less expensive for lodging, I would have stayed there.

If you are set on going to Sorrento, stay somewhere closer to town if you can find a decent price. Il Nido was the best I could do since many places were already booked a month in advance (I kind of waited until the last minute to find a room) and the price was right, breakfast was pretty good, but overall we felt very unwelcome. The attitudes of hotel staff and establishments can often make or break the visit for me.

We spent two great nights in Il Nido. Very clean room with good air-conditioning and adequate bath (though water pressure was a problem) and stunning view!! (There was a lift and parking.) The staff was exceptionally helpful; went out of their way to assist with several needs and were great with driving directions to local points. (Also note that they provide free internet hookup.) DO take their shuttle into Sorrento and use ferries to Capri and other locales; driving and parking is too difficult. Coming back to this quiet spot with its beautiful views was great. Restaurant was fine, with the best donuts -- grafs?? -- we have ever eaten :)

When we booked the hotel, we were sold on the van that the hotel offered. We definitely made the right choice: Il Nido is located up on the cliff, so the van was very convenient; we didn't pay a cent for any road transportation during our stay. When we arrived by ferry from Napoli, the van even picked us up from the train station (Circumvesuviana)! Accomodations are standard and clean. Breakfast is average, but the amazing view enhances the meal. The gentleman at the front desk provided a handy sheet with a map of town and train/bus schedules copied on the back. This made it easy for us to plan our 3 day stay. No complaints, just average.

Il Nido (The Nest) is family run, from the front desk to the back office to the kitchen, by an extraordinarily hard-working family. One of the brothers who own the hotel is also the front desk guy and the waiter. When asked about a delicious dish he told us that mama was in the kitchen. The hotel is not fancy, but it is clean, air-conditioned (we visited during a heat wave), has satellite TV with CNN, and has great food (try the thick vegetable soup, the gnocchi, and the home-made limoncello liqueur, far better than what is sold in town. Some TA reviewers have said that the beds were not comfortable, but ours was fine. As other reviewers noted, the hotel has old-fashioned European flat bath towels, rather than fluffy thirsty ones, but that was really not a big deal. There are two computers available to guests for Internet access, and the staff did not complain when I spent hours on one of them to handle a work emergency that came up during the trip. Il Nido is about three miles from Sorrento, up in the hills with a spectacular view of Sorrento and Vesuvius. We picked it because we wanted a quiet place to stay and had read on TA that downtown can be noisy. The hotel runs a van to and from strategic locations in town on a regular schedule. We found it pretty easy to live on that schedule. There is really no place you can walk to easily from the hotel, other than Il Borga, a restaurant just down the hill (we ate there one night and it was very nice but not as good as the restaurant at Il Nido). On only one occasion did we end up needing to take a cab from Sorrento to Il Nido, a pricey ride that we were happy to take after a very full and exhausting day touring Paestum, when we did not want to eat downtown and the van would have gotten us back to the hotel too late for dinner. We recommend it highly. It is not luxurious, but at 90 Euros a night it was a great value and just right for us.

If you need new and fancy surroundings or have to be in the middle of lots of action, this is not the hotel for you. However, it you value tranquility, a spectacular view of the Italian coastline from the balcony of your room, and a hotel staff that goes out of their way to please their guests, then this hotel is an excellent choice. In case no one has warned you, Sorrento is loud and hectic, overrun with tourists and traffic. Every evening, we were thankful that we could return to the hotel, which served as a refuge from from the noise. We found this hotel and restaurant to be the best value for the dollar in our entire stay in Italy. It is true that the beds are not particularly good and you have to rely on the hotel shuttle to get around, but these things are greatly outweighed by the atmosphere and service you receive. Anyone traveling on a limited budget will not find a better value.

We choose this hotel because it was not in the center of town and offered free parking and free shuttle service to and from town. It turned out to be a wonderful experience and we'd highly recommend it to everyone who wants a beautiful location within easy reach of the center of Sorrento via the free shuttle service.

We spent 4 nights at this terrific hotel in early May 2005. We reserved a garden room via the internet at 80 Euros per night including breakfast and were promised that we would be upgraded to water view room at the same price if one was available when we arrived. We charged a one night deposit to our credit card but were told it wouldn't be processed until we checked out. Communication back and forth prompt and all our questions were answered before we reserved.

We had a wonderful, large, spotlessly clean room with a great view of the Bay. The queen size bed was firm and comfortable and the room had a mini-bar, satellite TV and telephone. The bathroom was large as well with a tub, large lavatory, bidet etc. A small balcony contained a table and 2 chairs and a clothes line.

The free shuttle service was a blessing since traffic in the center of Sorrento, even before the height of the season, is awful and parking is practically impossible. In the morning, there were 2 trips into town and beginning around 3 p.m. there were hourly trips back and forth until 11:30 p.m. The van would drop people off at the marina or the train/bus station in the morning and to and from a central location later in the day. We were able to go at various times to walk around, have dinner, take the ferry to Capri, the Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii, Naples, the buses to Positano and Amalfi etc.

Il Nido also has a restaurant with a terrace which serves nice dinners at moderate prices. A very substantial breakfast, included in the room price, was served buffet style and had cereals, pastries, bread, fresh juice and fruit, cold meats, cheese and hot drinks. Breakfast was a nice time to meet fellow travelers too.

There is also a lounge area in the lobby with magazines, books etc. and a small bar area which wasn't in use during our stay. There is also a roof terrace. There's an elevator and for those who can't stand to be out of touch, the hotel has 2 computer terminals in the lobby with free internet access.

The staff was terrific and English, French, German and possibly other languages are spoken. They gave us good recommendations for eating and shopping in Sorrento too.

We can't recommend this place too highly. We originally found it on Trip Advisor and were glad we chose it for our stay.
