“Outstanding. One of the best hotel experiences of my life!”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

My husband had to drag me from the balcony ~ I loved the view so much. We stayed for 6 nights in a suite on the 3rd floor, overlooking the sea and harbor. Mt Vesuvius was always in our view. Our room was spectacular, with a sitting area, two full baths, a huge private terrace, and the most luxurious bed. Breakfasts were fantastic, with a full buffet, an omelette station, and a live piano player. For breakfast! I asked for a tour of this beautiful, antique-filled historic hotel, and they happily arranged it for me, as well as provided me with a lovely printed overview.

I would be so lucky as to stay here again.

Room Tip: We enjoyed our room overlooking the sea. I would heartily recommend a room with a terrace.

What a beautiful hotel – can we give it more stars? This is truly a grand hotel with beautiful furnishings, an incredible view, gracious staff, good facilities, a lovely pool area, a fancy restaurant, and a quiet and peaceful garden that places you apart from the hustle and bustle of crowded Sorrento. Note that Sorrento is very touristy and traffic in town is slow with its narrow and crowded road arteries. The Excelsior lets you escape all that with one step into their serene gardens. The hotel is located on a high cliff overlooking the scenic ferry/cruise ship harbor (Marina Piccola). Even though the hotel is right in town at the busy Piazza Tasso, there is a gated entry (with friendly staff gate keeping) that takes you onto a path about a football-field length through the gardens, past the spa and pool areas, and to the entrance to the hotel. There are at least 3 buildings to the hotel, we were in a little building “Favorita” that didn’t quite seem to fit in with the other structures (it looked a bit like a chalet). But we loved our room and location. Other buildings were more elegant and ornate with formal statues and paintings in the stairways – very old world – but we loved our little Favorita!

The lobby is large and airy, yet also very elegant, as are the various sitting and dining rooms furnished with antiques, and elaborately painted 18th Century columns and frescoed arched ceilings. You could have coffee or drinks in these sitting areas or read the paper. There is a terrace bar that also serves food, and it has the expansive and to-die-for view of the harbor, the coastline in two directions, and, oh yes, Vesuvius front and center across the Gulf of Naples. The terrace was usually cool and windy during our stay so it did not get a lot of business. Nor did the pool, which was a lovely take on the infinity pool. There are nice sitting areas and a pool bar that served “snacks” until 3pm, but the water (both in the pool and the spa) were still chilly in April. In the pool area, there is a small roped-off area of ruins that are said to be Roman Emperor Augustus’ villa.

Out at the edge of the terrace bar, there is an elevator that takes you WAY down to the dock area. This is where the ferries leave for Capri, other islands and Naples. There was usually a big crowd for the Capri ferries, but we did not go there. There is also a not-very-pretty (dark gravelly sand) small public beach, where we did see some hearty souls enjoying a Gulf swim. If you are doing the ferries, the elevator is a great convenience since the road down to the dock from town is a narrow and steep switchback with the alternative of MANY steps on a path to match the road’s elevation drop. When you are ready to leave the dock, you just go to the lower entrance to the hotel, ring the buzzer, the staff check you out on the camera, and you get buzzed in to walk the hallway back to the elevator.

Now to our room. We had a deluxe seaview, and it was all that and more! It was a large room, with a large bathroom, a balcony and a large terrace, and a view that took your breath away! We had a firm king bed with nice linens, small desk in one corner, mirrored armoire, dresser with orchids, 2 night stands, large desk and TV, minibar, sitting chairs and a table, a very small safe and additional drawers. To one side of the room are glass doors to our personal large terrace with a table and chairs that overlooked the terrace bar and that fabulous view. The front of the room had glass doors to a narrow balcony that looked straight across the Gulf of Naples onto Vesuvius straight ahead – magnificent! The ferry and cruise ship dock and public beach were straight down below so there was plenty of action to watch. The view from both the terrace and balcony was 180 so you could see up and down the coastline. WiFi was fast and stayed connected. Bath was equally nice with a separate glass shower with rain head, a large center-fill tub, large vanity, usual facilities, robes/slippers, and lots of oft replenished good toiletries. Our only nit was not enough water glasses, which we requested and got. Complementary cold bottled water and chocolates were delivered to the room, as well as the nightly turn-down service.

There is a very nice restaurant, but it did not even open until 7:30, it is pricey, and we figured it would take too long to eat there (we are not the linger-over-dinner types!). The good news is that there are all kinds of options for eating right in town, a short and pleasant walk away. However, one night, we had absolutely terrible weather (same day it poured on us at Herculaneum). The wind was howling, the sea was whipped up with large white caps, it was raining horizontally, lightning, and the clouds looked like the kind that could produce tornadoes. We did not relish getting out in that weather after getting warm and dry, so we broke down and ordered room service. A bottle of wine was 35Euro ($50), and the easiest thing, two burgers with fries, ran us 52Euros ($73). The burgers themselves weren’t that bad (16E each, but there is an additional 10E per person surcharge for room service. So, yes, those were the priciest burgers we have ever had! Room service was elegant and done very nicely, food was nothing to write home about, but we were nestled in our bathrobes and slippers and listening to the wind rattle all the doors and windows. It was worth not doing battle with the elements and we doubt the weather is that extreme very often!

Breakfast was included in our room rate, but to call it breakfast is a real understatement. It is served in a huge grand hall with seating overlooking that same marvelous view. There are tons of wait staff in white coat and tie, just there to not let you lift a finger. There was a huge long banquet table with all kinds of foods on both sides – tons of different pastries, croissants, pies, cakes, tarts, cereals, fruit (papayas, kiwis, strawberries, pineapple), smoked salmon, cold cuts and cheeses, breads, juices. You could have toast, waffles, French toast, muffins. The hot table had scrambled and fried eggs, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, and I am sure you could have anything made to order as well. There was a wonderful house-made lavender jelly, which was unique and refreshing. This was an incredible spread, but you could not begin to do it justice. Service was impeccable and the setting sublime!

On our check-out day, the hotel thought we were staying for another night (we wish!!), but they resolved things quickly and ensured that our next hotel was expecting us that day and that our driver would be coming to pick us up. While you might have expected snooty treatment at such an elegant hotel, that was not the case with service always being impeccable and genuinely friendly. To say that this was our favorite hotel on our visit to Italy would be an understatement. We loved the Excelsior and will go back there if ever in the region. Thank you, Excelsior, for a wonderful stay!

Room Tip: We loved the Favorita section and our deluxe seaview #221. We had a balcony with a view of Vesuvius...

Legend has it that 2,000 years a Villa for Emperor Augustus rested on the same site that today is the home of the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. Stepping off the busy downtown streets of Sorrento into the grounds that make up the hotel… one does feel transported back in time. The hotel, surrounded by lush gardens and the Bay of Naples, is a quiet peaceful oasis in a bustling town center.

On my first visit to the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria, I was surprised at the location of the hotel. It sits just off the main square. Yet as you pass through the entryway and walk deeper into the property, you sense the tranquility and are impressed by the beauty of five acres of greenery and flowers.

The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoriais made up of three buildings, linked together to form the hotel complex. The hotel is owned and managed by the Fiorentino family for six generations. The three buildings of the hotel were built between 1834 and 1880 so each is unique and rooms sizes and shapes are quite variable. Almost every room has a terrace or balcony overlooking the Bay of Naples -and what a view.

The rooms are tastefully furnished with original period furniture. With three buildings, there are many different room categories, including:
Deluxe Premium Sea View,
Classic Garden View,
Classic Sea View,
Deluxe Sea View,
Suite Degli Aranci,
Suites Sea View,
Junior Suite,
Antique/Vittoria /Caruso Suite,
and the Royal/Pompei Suites.

Many have special historical significance… like the Enrico Caruso suite, which retains the same décor and furnishings as when the famous Italian tenor stayed there for more several months, in 1921.

The Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria has five restaurants on property. If you book through a Virtuoso Advisor, the Vittoria restaurant – with its original decorated ceilings of the early 19th century – is where you would enjoy your complimentary breakfast with its full American buffet. It also hosts many gala dinners and weddings.

We enjoyed our time at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria. The combination of gardens, views of the Bay, lavish accommodations, and level of service all created a relaxing stay. The location of this hotel allows you to explore Naples, Capri, the Amalfi, and then at the end of the day, return to a beautiful oasis.

Stayed 3 nights. Excellent property, great location, great view of bay of Naples. Nicelyappointed rooms, toiletries, slippers, robes. I would rate it an A+ They also serve a very good buffet breakfast. Nothing else really to say but I must total at least 200 characters, so this part is just filler to achieve the minimum, no more content, just filler that is meaningless.

We stayed here for four days after a week in Florence and Rome - we could not have planned better. Sorrento with its relaxing style and ocean overviews, we enjoyed every aspect the hotel had to offer. The gourmet dinner we had was excellent - as was the dinner in their Mediterranean restaurant. The room was spectacular and the views fantastic. But in the end, the staff made our stay as enjoyable as it was. Hope to get back there soon!

Room Tip: We stayed in 201 - do not know what the others would have offered, but with two terraces - ocean and...

After spending 8 days in Florence and the Tuscan countryside, we were delighted to arrive at this elegant seaside hotel. Our suite was divine, with a huge terrace, overlooking Naples Bay and Mt. Vesuvius. We found Sorrento to be a very charming tourist town. Yes, I said tourist town, and no wonder.......it is filled with every kind of restaurant, every kind of shop, access to the ferries to Capri, Portofino, and Amalfi and easy access by train to Pompeii. I adored this area and would happily return anytime. The staff at reception and in the dining room couldn't have been more gracious. We were given excellent restaurant referrals which we greatly appreciated. We were there a week and a half before Easter, which I understand was fortunate. The town was not deserted, but not crowded either. Just perfect! If you have a chance.........GO!

We spent three days here and enjoyed them all. Room was spacious and comfortable, and we lucked into the best balcony / deck at the hotel ( ask for room 428). Layout of the property is wonderful, with easiest access to the various ferries, of any of the Sorrento hotels. Pool is large and private, with a nice poolside restaurant.

Breakfast buffet is expensive (E 33) but you want for much of anything. Had dinner in their Michelin one star restaurant, which actually had some reasonably priced wines (some outrageous ones too!)

Staff great, strong recommendation

Room Tip: Room 428 with the largest balcony at the hotel.
