Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria
Ranked #4 of 100 Hotels in Sorrento
Reviewed 13 August 2014

From the first glimpse of the hotel, to our romantic room, with the most amazing view of the Bay of Naples, this hotel was first class. We stayed the first two nights of our wonderful trip in Italy. I can't imagine a more beautiful start to our unforgettable vacation. The staff was very helpful, and the grounds were beautiful, for early morning walks. Delicious breakfasts to start each day, and soft beds to end the day. The hotel is located close to everything so we could walk to restaurants, and the center of town. Sorrento is a lovely place, with friendly people. We would love to go back one day and stay in this lovely grand hotel one more time.

Room Tip: Ask for a room, with a view of the Bay of Naples, and a large terrace.

I have been holidaying in Sorrento for the best part of 40 years and have always been curious about the Excelsior Vittoria. In the past it was always impossible to visit the hotel to have a drink or a meal and the security guards warded off any interlopers. However, over the past couple of years, the Excelsior Vittoria has been inviting non-residents in to the terrace to have a drink and enjoy the music in the early evening (a response to the increasingly competitive hotels in Sorrento?) We were really pleased to have the opportunity to see the hotel and went in one evening for a drink. What a disappointment! The terrace was cramped and unattractive in comparison with other hotels with the same outlook. The music was average and the atmosphere was anything but exclusive as we had expected. The staff were very efficient without being particularly welcoming and the drinks were ridiculously expensive. We were staying at the Europa Palace (next hotel along the cliff) and were extremely glad we had chosen that hotel. No doubt the rooms are beautiful ( I have no idea) but I no longer have the desire to stay at this hotel.

I had the pleasure of staying at this absolutely wonderful hotel with my Daughter who was married in the cloisters and then had their wedding reception at the hotel. The suite was amazing, the staff addressed us personally and made every effort to make our event truly memorable. We had drinks and the best nibbles ever on the terrace before an amazing 5 course dinner in the beautiful dining room and then a party at the pool bar. This hotel is definitely the best I have ever stayed in and it made our special event something I will never forget. The attention to detail, which included choosing the dinner service, was superb and the hotel co-ordinator made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish. The perfect place for a wedding reception or a stay of any sort, although we didn't use them the children's facilities and play areas looked fantastic also.

Room Tip: Any room with a sea view would be fantastic because of the hotel position.

My husband and I stayed in the Grand Hotel Vittoria for a week in May. We can not say enough about this wonderful hotel.
We had the most beautiful room - sea view - with a huge balcony. Reluctantly, we left it every evening to go to dinner. The hotel is centrally located with a wide choice of restaurants within minutes walk in the town.
Breakfast - presentation and content- was magnificent. Serene and relaxed with a pianist in residence.
On arrival, we were told that there would be another Michelin starred chef joining the resident Michelin chef the following evening. Wow. Were we glad that we took the opportunity of taking a table. We have done the Michelin starred restaurant thing (1 - 3) in various places previously and we both felt that this was the first time that we were being given exceptionally good value for the experience. And it was an experience - an array of amuse bouche prepared on the veranda overlooking the Bay of Naples whist we sipped constantly refilled bubbly.
The hotel staff were superb. This is a grand, old fashioned hotel where those working there do not have jobs as much as careers and are all proud of their work and of the place in which they work. We got a hug from the concierge leaving!!
If we can ever again shake off The Troops and get away without them, we look forward to returning. That said, it was half term in England when we stayed and there were a few children staying.

I recently had the opportunity to spend four nights at the Grand Hotel Excelsior with my family as we started our summer holidays in Italy. The hotel is one of those true gems and it truly exceeded our expectations on all fronts. The location is perfect, the staff is attentive, the food divine and the rooms very comfortable.

As for dining don't miss Terrazza Bosquet, we enjoyed their tasting menu, three hours later we were wrapping up one of the best meals I've enjoyed in recent memory.

On a recent holiday to Sorrento we dined at most of the 5 star hotels but chose to go to the Vittoria on our last night , we know the hotel as we used to go for afternoon drinks on the terrace most days, on the night in question we were asked if we wanted formal or informal dining so we chose formal, we were seated in the outside dining area which was covered by a awning with fabulous views, from the moment we walked in we were treated as royalty, the staff very attentive but not intrusive, we had several treats in-between courses which were very nice indeed & watching the wine sommelier open our bottle of wine was theatre in its self. The food was tremendous as was the whole evening and when the bill arrived we were presently surprised, not as much as we thought for such a prestigious establishment were King & Queens had dined before us, it is certainly on our list again when we revisit Sorrento.

We stopped at Sorrento for the day, whilst on a Wonderful Silverseas cruise. The shuttle bus from the port took us up to the very busy square. We wondered looking for somewhere nice for lunch. Tavern where was packed. But as we walked along the pavement my husband spotted a sign in the wall saying Leading Hotels of the World. We knew it must be the famous hotel. We approached a very nice security guard and asked it was okay to go in for lunch and explained that we hadn't booked. He directed us through beautiful gardens to the terrace. We were given a table outside under an olive tree with spectacular views over the bay. We couldn't have asked for more. We thought this is going to cost us! But to our surprise it was quite reasonable and the waiters didn't mind if you only had one course or even 2 starters. My husband and I both had a blue lobster salad, 24euros each, washed down with a great bottle of Sauvignon 28 euros. It really was wonderful. Don't be afraid of this place, just walk straight in, you won't be disappointed. Also at the end of the meal, we were shown to a lift in the rocks that took us straight down to the port. This is the way celebrities arrive from there yachts! No need for shuttle bus! Pease don't miss this place, it really is so peaceful compared to the noise and traffic of the square.
