“Great views and nice hotel”
Reviewed 26 May 2011

This hotel is located within a 15 minute walk from the center of town, but has great views overlooking Sorrento and Mount Vesuvius. The staff was great, the pool was very big and the walk down to town was nothing to complain about. Would definitely stay here again considering you get a great value here with great service.

We booked a junior suite for around 160 Euros a night including breakfast for 2 adults and 2 kids. We were upgraded on arrival to two interconnecting bedrooms with plenty of room and a view over the Town and the sea with Vesuvius in the distance. The rooms are fine - not luxurious but perfectly adequate.
The hotel itself serves both business and leisure holidaymakers and has a conference centre built in.
The outdoor pools were just getting going in mid April but were cold. The indoor pool (curiously open to one of the main dining halls) nestles up against the rock face and is good for splashing about but not for serious exercise.
The breakfast was great - massive variety and unlimited freshly squeezed orange juice.
Other meals looked expensive so we went into town to eat at half the price!

Room Tip: Ask for the front of the hotel.

But it is its location that allows such great views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. Make sure to get a sea view room, otherwise you will probably be dissapointed. My issue with the hotel's location is that unlike other Sorrento hotels, it does not offer a shuttle bus to town. Although the hotel itself is only an easy 12-15 minute walk from town, it is far and uphill enough that you will not want to walk back to the hotel until going to sleep. Keep in mind that taxis in Sorrento are ridiculously expensive. Another thing that bothered me was that the air conditioning seemed to shut down literally every 20 seconds, although the room was cold enough.

On the positive side, the hotel is clean, the breakfast is very good and the bathroom (at least in my Executive Room) was enormous. Would probably stay here again if I go back to Sorrento, but only if I can reserve a sea view room.

Room Tip: Sea view room.

From every standpoint of measurement, the Hilton Sorrento Palace was fantastic from chech-in to check-out one week later. As a matter of fact, our welcome at check-in by Pina was the best we have ever experienced at ANY hotel anywhere worldwide and the staff kept that welcoming exemplary service attitude throughout our entire stay. Further, the grounds were immaculate, the facility spotless, and the view from our room was to die for. (The later was very special to us since Mrs. Barr could enjoy the panorama of her birthplace across the Bay every day from our room. )

Walking to and from Sorrento, the Circumvesuviana or the port was delighful since we could pick up some fava beans for munchies at a green grocer on the way and there is a wonderful pasticceria just a few meters to the right on Via degli Aranci.

Without a doubt, we look forward to returning. Anyone who does not try this hotel once needs to have their head examined.

Room Tip: Ask for a upper floor Bay room near the elevators

I'm a Honors Diamond Member (Stay @ Hilton hotels 150+ nights a year) and have stayed here twice, both times I was initially refused an upgrade but once I pointed out that upgraded rooms were available for sale they very reluctantly upgraded to the mid class Exec rooms on the 4th floor but not to the best rooms which are on the 7th floor. Then tried to refuse access to the Exec lounge until I showed them their policy on the web at which point I was told it didn't apply in Sorrento, in the end they reluctantly gave us access, it just shouldn't be so hard!

Good - Views (Sea view rooms only), Exec lounge & Pool great for snacks during the day and breakfast (limited range of food), easy walk into town (10 mins), Clean rooms.

Bad - Check in staff couldn't care less, was initially ignored at the Hilton Honors check in desk then checked in by a mixture of three people who were far more interested in talking on the phone (they answered four phone calls while checking us in) and to their colleagues; Check out staff the same; Rooms (stayed in 429) very bare and lack any soul, sound insulation poor - you can hear everything going on in the corridors and adjacent rooms, doors opening and shutting, kids running up and down etc; Breakfast in the main restaurant very busy and understaffed - 20 mins wait in a queue for a crepe and then the same in another queue for an omelette;Bathrooms very dated with shower over the bath; Taxi into town €15 (a total rip off) there should be a shuttle, Parking hard work unless you're willing to pay €15 a day

I want to love this place but it needs some effort out into the customer, the hotel was at best 50% full when we were there and still it wasn't great.

Just a note about weather at this time of year in Europe - Sun is by no means guaranteed, we stayed 8 days and had 3 days of solid rain, 3 OK'ish days and two sunny days, my recommendation would be book late at this time of the year, check the forecast for the coming week and if it's OK then go the next day, still no guarantee though! the place is not geared up to bad weather!

Would I go again, doubt it!

Dear Vistaro,

First and foremost, I would like to thank you for taking the time to communicate your experience at our property. Guest comments, whether positive or negative are always welcome and remedial actions are taken whenever possible.

As far as the upgrade is concerned, although I realise the overwhelming impression is far from favourable, I can assure you that such occurrences are extremely unusual when executive rooms are available for the entire stay.

I appreciate your positive comments regarding our Executive Lounge & pool facilities and the cleanliness of our rooms.

I apologise if the check in and check out processes were not up to Hilton standards and please rest assured that we have taken the necessary steps to prevent this from happening again. With regards to the breakfast service, I would just like to explain that the crepes and eggs stations are an additional service that we wish to offer our Guests, as this is very much appreciated and requested year after year, therefore it may happen that queues line up, as they are made on the spot.

With regards to the car park, it is true that very few parking spots are free in the vicinity of the hotel, however ours is secure, guarded 24/7 and costs almost 40% less that public and unsafe parking areas.

I would value the opportunity to restore your confidence in the Hilton Sorrento Palace and would appreciate it if you could contact me directly should you wish to come back to Sorrento. This way, I will ensure that mine is not only a philosophy, but gets pragmatically put into place.

Yours sincerely,

We can’t give enough accolades for our four night stay at the Hilton Sorrento Palace during April 2011. It was, indeed, perfect in every way. From the moment we checked in late on a Sunday evening, we were warmly greeted by the Front Desk staff who spoke perfect English, anticipated our every need, answered our numerous questions as it was our first time in Sorrento, explained the hotel amenities, showed us the Executive Lounge, and escorted us to our wonderful room on the Fifth floor with a mesmerizing view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius. The accommodations and view from the hotel look exactly as exquisite as they do in the pictures on the hotel website (better than the general Hilton website for information and pictures) http://www.sorrentopalacehotel.com/.
Although the hotel was fully booked and there were several conventions at the hotel during our stay, we did not find that they detracted from our stay, did not create a feeling of overcrowding, and the Front Desk was always available, attentive, and more than willing to help us in every way. We had emailed the hotel before our stay and got helpful planning information and urge you to do the same if you have any questions.

We had read the many reviews of the Hilton Sorrento Palace on Trip Advisor and other blogs before our stay and, despite some mixed reviews, decided to give the hotel a try. We are so glad we did, as we experienced all of the good points mentioned by reviewers and the stay far exceeded our expectations. We note, below, our experiences with various issues raised by other reviewers:

Accommodations: The lobby/reception area, with large glass windows overlooking the beautiful grounds, was open, spacious, sparkling clean, and very comfortable. The indoor pool was spectacular. Although it was closed off at certain times during our stay for conference events, the hotel made a special effort to let guests know when the indoor pool was open and the outdoor pools remained open throughout the day. The grounds were a delight, with multiple pools, lemon orchards, cascading fragrant lilacs, and beautiful views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. We are Hilton Diamond members, were staying at the hotel with points, and were hoping for an upgrade to the Executive Floor but, given the full house, we were not able to get the upgrade until our final evening there. Nonetheless, our sea view room on the Fifth floor was bright and cheery, spacious and clean, with a comfortable bed, good bathroom facilities, and all needed amenities, including an in-room safe. We had expected self-service laundry facilities at the hotel, but found that there was a misunderstanding through pre-trip emails and the self-service facilities are in town, with the hotel offering paid laundry and dry clean services.

The view from both inside the room and from the balcony was spectacular, with an expansive vista of the beautiful grounds around the hotel, the town of Sorrento, Mt. Vesuvius, and the Bay of Naples. Although concerns have been expressed about the openness of the balcony outside the sliding glass doors from the rooms, we found the partial barriers to afford adequate privacy and loved sitting outside inhaling the delightful scents of Spring blooms and savoring the sights. Despite the hotel being fully booked during our stay, we nonetheless had complete privacy on the balcony and never experienced the noise factor in hallways, nor heard the sound of slamming doors or sounds from adjoining rooms that some have cited in reviews. We are light sleepers and, in fact, found our room to be remarkably quiet and the atmosphere was fully relaxing and peaceful throughout the hotel and the grounds, despite the two conferences being held. On our last night at the Sorrento Palace, we had the treat of being upgraded to the Executive floor. The Front Desk took care of moving our luggage and we arrived back at the hotel after a day of sightseeing at Pompeii to a spectacular room, with a spectacular view and the treat of fireworks that night. It was the perfect end to a perfect stay. We agree with those who have recommended an upgrade to an Executive Room, if available, because of the additional space and amenities, but you will not be disappointed with rooms on other floors.

Executive Lounge: As Diamond members, we had full access to the Executive Floor Lounge during our stay, which was a delight. Throughout the day and evening, there were wonderful food selections and a variety of drinks in the relaxing and beautiful Lounge, which opened up to an outside patio and an affinity rooftop pool, with spectacular views inside and outside the Lounge. We were given complimentary vouchers to use the internet, which was an added bonus. The staff at the Executive Lounge were awesome in every way. They worked non-stop to be attentive to each and every person in the Lounge, kept the Lounge fully stocked throughout the day, attended to every need, provided complimentary breakfast to order, and even made a special effort to restock a delicious Italian salami after the Lounge ran out late at night. We tried both the breakfast buffet in the general breakfast area, as well as the Executive Lounge, and found both to be terrific, complete with extensive offerings of hot and cold breakfast items from eggs and bacon to a variety of breads, yogurts, pastries, and fresh fruit. The highlight in both areas was a self-serve machine to squeeze our own fresh orange juice from oranges picked on the grounds, complete with fresh limbs and leaves attached! Both the general breakfast area and the Executive Lounge also offered self-serve stations for a variety of coffees, which we could make to order. Other juices, drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic) flowed freely throughout the day in the Executive Lounge. Although we found the comprehensive breakfast adequate to tide us over until dinner, there were ample delicious offerings throughout the day and evening in the Executive Lounge. We had dinner in the Lounge several evenings, with a delicious variety of offerings from salads to sandwiches, hot dishes, and deserts. The Lounge was quiet, very comfortable with many private areas, never felt crowded, and was a wonderful place to begin and end the day.

Service: Throughout our visit, the Front Desk staff were warm, friendly, exceptionally accommodating, and offered personalized, practical information and insight about how to enjoy local sites, view the Amalfi coast, visit Pompeii and Capri, and suggestions for local restaurants. They provided a print out with timetables and costs of all public transportation, which made planning our day trips a breeze. We found the staff to be as attentive to us (staying on points), as they were to competing corporate customers. The Front Desk staff were plentiful throughout the day and night, always available despite a full house, spoke perfect English, and were able to answer every need. I left my baseball cap at one of the restaurants in Sorrento, and the Front Desk sprung into action, called the restaurant, and recovered my cap.

Location and Transportation: Sorrento is, indeed, the perfect central site for touring throughout the Amalfi coast and surrounding area. We spent our entire stay in Sorrento (travelling from Rome) without a rental car – relying primarily on public transportation and a few cab rides. We read lots of warnings about the cost of local cabs, and found them to be expensive -- but not exorbitant -- and well worth it for the few occasions we needed them for transport to and from the hotel with luggage (around 15 -18 Euros, with tip). We also found the local public bus (with a bus stop half a block from the hotel) to be convenient to return to the hotel (although somewhat unreliable in pick up from the hotel). The walk into town was very manageable (particularly downhill) and was a delightful 10 – 15 minute leisurely stroll through lemon groves and local shops. We were able to use public transportation easily for all sightseeing and trips to surrounding areas -- the Almafi coast (by bus from the train station), the hydrofoil to Capri, and Pompeii (by the local train). As a tip, the local shops at the train station were much easier and faster to use for purchasing train and bus tickets and to get information than the official train office, which did not speak English and was not helpful. The cost for buying tickets for the train and bus at the local shops at the train station, as well as at the hotel Front Desk and other shops, was the same as waiting in line to buy them at the official train office window. As another tip, we were delighted to find that there is a public bus that costs only one Euro to take you up the very steep and long hill from the harbor in Sorrento back to the town center. The bus is readily identifiable in the parking lot of the harbor (just follow the crowds).

In sum, we recommend the Hilton Sorrento Palace to all, whether paying customers or using Hilton points, as we did. We are confident you will enjoy every moment there, thanks to the wonderful, attentive staff, great accommodations, and breathtaking views and hope you have as wonderful a stay as we did. We can’t wait to return. Ciao and kudos to the great Hilton Sorrento staff!
