“Enjoyed the hotel - with a just a few niggles!”
Reviewed 24 July 2011

Looked like Sorrento's largest hotel; great situation above the town with sea views across the Bay of Naples to Mt. Vesuvius and Naples itself (seaview room). or the cliff face (std room). BIG public areas inside the hotel, with sofas on the enormous staircases that no-one will sit on, indoor pool that no-one goes to,and a very spacious reception and bar area. In every case, I couldn't fault the staff - polite and helpful - though the table service by the pool could have been a little speedier - but hey, you're on holiday! Special mentions must go to Rosetta in the breakfast room who smiled all the time even though the queue for pancakes never stopped (one day she had to look after the waffle machine, two pancake hotplates, and the egg section all by herself without seeming to lose her smile!) and another mention to Giuseppe in the outside bar/restaurant who was most attentive and charming - well done!
Best thing about the breakfast - huge choice of food and the fresh orange juice machine - get there before it gets blocked by rogue orange halves and has to be dismantled daily
Minus points - and there are just three:-
1) WiFi access is expensive - join the call for free wifi access in all hotels -even if it's just free in the lobby area. Not expensive to install.
2) Car parking - available on a large piece of land about 200m distant from the hotel - 15 euros a day! When you're paying in excess of 200 euros a day for your room, this is highway robbery. You might understand it in the crowded town centre, but not out of town. There is limited road parking outside the front of the hotel, but we never found a space in 7 days.
3) Not enough parasols by the pool to give shade
Enjoyed our stay, apart from the above points which have been submitted to the hotel by me in writing - let's see if I get a response

We were told this hotel was some distance from the main shopping and restaurant area, but although it sits on a hill it is an easy walk of five minutes into town. Fabulous views from all levels of the Bay of Naples and very little traffic noise. Bus stop just down the road. Food not very inspiring but great service.

I use Hilton Hotels a lot so know what to expect from the brand. Unfortunately this hotel did not live up to my previous experiences of them. Yes it's clean and friendly staff etc etc, We stayed in an Executive room which was fine, plenty of space with a well appointed bathroom. This bit lived up to our expectations.
As mentioned in previous posts the lack of free wi-fi is an absolute disgrace. Go down the street and theres a small bar and for the cost of a beer you can have it for free, all day if you want.
The food in the restaurant, we were half board, was a very poor effort for a hotel of this standing. The cheapest of ingredients dressed up to look good. For example they had roast leg of pork, which forever looked like what it was supposed to be, only to find it was actually processed ham shaped to look like the real thing. We ended up eating out some nights as Sorrento has much more to offer. After making my concerns known I was told that we could eat in their a la carte restaurant with a reduction of 20% off the bill.
This shows the value even they place on their own restaurant food!!!
The executive lounges, there were 2, were very hit and miss as far as free drinks were concerned. They applied their own unique opening hours and all drinks were not available all the time. for example after dinner the spirits etc were all put away???? you were left with Grappa and Limoncehllo only. WHY? We have paid for it !!! On departure we still hadn't figured out their rota.
When we left here we went on to stay in the Hilton in Newcastle in the UK and my, such a difference.
Hilton Sorrento is clean, staff ok, room ok, location ok, views from hotel excellent, exec lounges below average, food is edible but poor quality, Would I return? for the money it cost me NO, there's better out there. If you are coming, do not do 1/2 board as a short stroll away you are spoiled for choice.

Clean hotel, great views, got to upgrade your room to be satisfied, over priced food, service is ok, 10 mins walk from town centre, 10 mins walk to train/bus station.
It's overall a comfortable stay but there are much better hotels in Sorrento for the same cost.
Breakfast gets busy fast and there are a ton of lines...get to breakfast by 8 and your ok.
Wifi is not free...it's 35cents per minute....
The pool gets very crowded too....
The gym is good and indoor pool is not worth going to!!

The Sorrento palace has been our first choice Hotel in Sorrento but now not sure we will return due to the cutbacks they have made in service. The Hotel as a building is great and jaw dropping internally, the grounds and pool area are some of the best in Sorrento so it may seem strange for me to say I may not go back again. The issues I have are really a matter of personal choice and the changes may suit you so don't be to put off. The breakfast is all you could want and has not been affected so if you are on B&B go for it. If you go on half board, then this has changed I feel for the worse, it was full waiter service with a wide choice on the menu. This has now been changed to buffet service with limited choice, one meat one fish one pasta; these are not very warm and some time the meat is veal or rabbit which is not always to the taste of some countries. What was a beautiful "Italian" dining experience has now become a free for all quick in quick out probably to suit the vast conferences on site. As I mentioned before this type of dining does suit some people but don't expect a vast buffet it is just a limited menu in tins. The Dress code was very strict, no sorts etc. but this has now gone with people dining looking like the have just come from the pool or a football match. The drinks it the Hotel are very expensive as you will be able to tell by the very large empty bar. Don't be put off with posts saying it is a long way from town, it is at most 10 to 15 mins walk, there is no point in having a bus as the drop off point for hotel busses is just round the corner from the hotel, it can't go into town as this is pedestrianised in the evening; the exercise is good for you after lazing by the pool. If you want to eat out in the evenings try La Lanterna in town, sit inside for a true Italian experience. For a grown up evening try the Foreigners Club, good food, good beer and great duo with dancing.

Room Tip: Unless you have money to burn it is very easy to get to the sights on your own.

HiltonPR, Direttore generale at Hilton Sorrento Palace, responded to this review, 26 July 2011
Dear Dancecrazee01,

I wish to thank you for your review following your recent stay at the Hilton Sorrento Palace.

With regards to our recent change from waiter service to buffet service at dinner, I would just like to explain to you that we decided to make this change as, considering the large number of Half Board Guests we register every evening, unfortunately we could no longer ensure the same excellent levels of service that are what is expected of the Hilton Sorrento Palace.

Our buffet selection includes:
- selection of appetizers including cold cuts, fish, vegetables and cheese
- 2 pasta dishes
- 1 hot soup
- 1 meat course (veal, rabbit, turkey, pork, chicken or beef)
- 1 fish course
- 2/3 side vegetables
- Salad buffet
- Fruit and dessert buffet
With a live station preparing pasta, carving meat or fish or making dessert on the spot in the dining room.

We do believe that this provides enough selection to suit all tastes, dietary needs and for all ages.

I’m sorry to hear that because of this change, you are considering not to return to our property, however, I would welcome the opportunity to make you reconsider and hope that you will contact me to arrange your future stay at our property.

Your sincerely,

Paolo Pedrazzini

We recently stayed at the Hilton Sorrento Palace and found the hotel of a fairy modern design. Service and staff were good as were the facilities. However, our mistake was booking a standard room, which are at the front of the hotel. There is no view whatsoever apart from the rock face. For the price paid, we found this very disappointing and were not informed of this at time of booking.
This is not a cheap hotel. Food and drinks are expensive. A bottle of water at meal time will set you back 5 euros. However, this is a comfortable hotel and food choice(buffet) is of an acceptable standard - provided they remember to top up certain dishes when it runs out.
Sorrento Town is around 10 mins walk downhill, and 15 mins back, but it is a lovely town with plenty of shops, restaurants and cafes.
Car hire is very expensive so do try to book before you go away. It can work out cheaper. Parking at the hotel will set you back 15 euros a day so try to get a parking bay within the white lined area. There is a charge for the blue parking areas, but you can only obtain tickets from a tabacconist which is in the town centre. A must is the 'Amalfi drive', with stop overs at Amalfi and Ravello - you will not be disappointed!
Do enjoy your trip!

This was a great family spot, although it is obviously a business convention hotel. The huge pool was great - the only "American-sized pool" out of 4 hotels we stayed in throughout Italy. The grounds were great for young children, the walk in to town was really not that bad, although would have been tough for older folks. (the hotel should really break down and start offering free shuttle service, they could afford to raise lodging rates a little to compensate). Food was not too great, but the rate could not be beat, so overall I was very happy with this hotel choice. We had balconies with a seaview, it was really enjoyable to watch the boats on the water.
