“Thoroughly enjoyable.”
Reviewed 29 June 2009

Stayed for a week at the Sorrento Palace two weeks ago. Husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our time at the hotel and in and around Sorrento.
Not sure how the hotel compares to others in the chain but we found it comfortable and spotless. We had an executive room which had a fantastic view of Vesuvious. Only drawback was the terrace outside was pretty much communal despite having a small partition between ours and the rooms either side so laying on the bed and enjoying the view could have been a problem. As it was nobody seemed to go beyond their 'space'.
Dining was very pleasant with quite attentive waiters although the speed at which the four courses came did vary each night. The setting if you wanted to eat outside was fantastic with the views across the town and towards the volcanoe. The quality of the food was very good with about four choices to each course. There was a small buffet selection of salads and deserts.
Breakfast was buffet style with lots of choice. Never tried the executive lounge breakfast .
As other people have said, the exec. lounge is worth it, great for snacking and drinks and quiet time. Nice not to have to 'pay' for wine and spirits. The prices in the town were crazy. The bars at the hotel and the piano lounge were deserted most evenings.
The pool on the roof is small but adequate, great for having a dip to cool off and at the same time marvel at the view. It was never crowded, always a lounger available and so peaceful. The main pool area could get busy at times.
Tha Amalfi coast is stunning and Capri is very pretty. Pompei is fasinating but gets very hot as was stumbling up the track to the top of Vesuvious. Be warned the path is very rough with rocks, stones and dust. You can borrow a stick to go up but a small donation is asked for when you return it. I found coming down worse as it was easty to slip on the loose stones.
Sorrento is charming and it's worth finding the narrow back streets to explore. The main roads can get very busy and noisy. Being set up on the hill away from the noise was just what we wanted and that's what you get from this hotel. The walk down is easy takes five minutes and when you've walked up once that's not difficult either.
The service from the staff was very good apart from the first ten minutes on arrival when despite having booked a weeks half board in an exec. room we were told no we hadn't in a very abrubt manner by one of the reception staff who insisted we were there in a standard room for six nights room only! Thank goodness we'd brought the invoice and after an anxious few minutes for us and a couple of phone calls by the staff member things were put right. No apology from him though.
I would recommend this hotel and would definately go back.

This hotel is nice but the rooms need updating. We stayed in the family room which was two rooms with 1 and 1/2 baths. The tile floor was chipped and it smelled a little. The breakfast was outstanding. They have a orange juice extractor which I loved. They also had omelets, crepes, waffles and doughnuts made to order. This was the best breakfast we had at a hilton in Italy. It is a hike to the shopping area but manageable. Older people may have a time walking back as it is uphill. The internet in the business center was pricy at .35 euros a minute. Printing was also extra.

The name Hilton and the 4 stars imply a certain standard that I didn't find in my room. It seems there are upgraded rooms and not upgraded rooms. I had a basic room on the 5th floor with a balcony facing the rock behind the hotel. I didn't really mind as I wasn't planning on staying in my room a lot. The balcony was tiny and you're shoulder to shoulder with your neighbour with only a very low divider between the balconies. It didn't feel very secure as anyone on the floor could walk right in if you balcony door was open.
The furniture was very basic. The bedspread on my bed was torn and the wardrobedoor was broken. The television and fridge were placed on an iron scaffolding. It all wasn't very inviting. The bathroom was sufficient.
I liked the breakfast buffet. It was lovely to sit on the balcony of the dining room.
Evening meals were a choice of 4 pastadishes as 2nd course and 4 main dishes. The pastadishes were very good. Pity the menu is repeated the next week, so if you stay for more than 7 days, you know what's coming. The serving staff were very friendly.
The pool is lovely and the view incredible. The towels are free.
All in all this hotel is okay, but I expected more. it certainly didn't feel like a 4 star retreat.

Stayed at the Hilton 3 nights courtesy Hilton points. Had a wonderful stay at Sorrento, wish we could stay there longer.

Getting There
If you are arriving by train - don't try and lug your bags to the hotel - while its a moderate 15 min walk - its not worth it with the bags. Take the bus right outside the station on the right - departs every 15 min or so and costs 2 Euro. Hilton is the last stop on the route (10 min ride). Remember to buy the tickets from the tobacco shop on the ground floor of the station

Pros
- Request for a room with a view to the Bay on a high floor - the view is just great and you can enjoy sunrise and sunset from the balcony
- Executive lounge gets you something to nibble and drink pretty much from 7 am to 10 pm. Great to have when you are back to the hotel and want to have a glass of wine and watch the sunset
- Breakfast is great - tip - try the 2nd floor breakfast area rather than the exec lounge - greater variety
- 5 pools including one on the rooftop - restricted to the exec lounge

Cons
- A little out of the way - but allows for a nice walk to town (remember to ask for the shortcuts at the front desk) which is much needed after the breakfast ! Might be pricey if you want to take a taxi - 20 Euros
- For those expecting ultimate luxury get another hotel - this one is based on a minimalistic modern look (which is lacking somewhat ....)
- Internet access is handled by an outside company and is a ripoff - use the one in town instead
- Would recommend eating in town as the restaurants are pricey

The hotel is not hugely far from the train station in Sorrento so we decided to walk there. It is quite up hill and when we checked in, it was clear that we had struggled to get up the hill with our luggage. The person checking us in (Guiseppe) did not even ask if we needed help with our luggage to be taken to the room.... Not great 4 star start!!!
Our room was on the 5th floor and I believe is not part of the upgraded rooms which exist in this hotel. The view from the balcony was amazing - the bay of Naples and Vesuvius but if you look either to the right or to the left when you were leaning on the balcony railing you also had a very clear view of the inside of your neighbour's rooms... There was a low table and two chairs on the balcony (chairs could do with cushions!) so you could sit out and enjoy some time there. We were staying there with our Hilton points but we did have to pay an extra €50 per night to get the view. Well worth it, I imagine the cliff face can be very boring after about 5 minutes!

The bed was very large and comfortable (two single beds pushed together) but the furnishings were very basic. The wardrobe was a rail within a box frame (imagine a wardrobe without doors), there was a small desk, one armchair, and the "entertainment system" was on wire shelves which are more normally found in a grocer's shop! This shelving system also held the fridge - in which you could find the safe... We had to go back to reception to get the key, Guiseppe having neglected to mention anything at all to us when we checked in... Lighting was neon lights - would have been nice to have some proper bedside lights.

Bathroom could have done with some updating, there was a shower over the bath, with a movable glass screen and if you did not ensure the screen was positioned correctly you just flooded the bathroom. Also, one washbasin only when there was ample room for two.

The door to the room needed to be slammed shut otherwise you may end up as we did spending the night with your bedroom door open all night. I am glad to report no harm came to us! The door was also very thin, and you could hear everything that was said in the corridor. So if you stay there, ask for a room as far away from the lift as you can to get peace and quiet!

There are 3 pools in the hotel (including one made up of 4 interconnecting pools), an indoor pool and a roof top pool, all of which were absolutely freezing cold in early June.
Luckily we had access to the executive lounge on the top floor, and this has to be one of the best executive lounges I have been to. There are complimentary drinks all day (soft and alcoholic - red, white wine and asti spumante, plus beer during evening meal time and later on grappa, limoncello and other local liqueurs). Also a fabulous machine making hot drinks (coffee, hot chocolate and various teas). There is also a great breakfast, lovely snacks for lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and after dinner chocolates. You can just graze all day and not use the restaurants. Staff in the executive lounge were varied in friendliness and efficiency but I can recommend Margarita. She was great!!!

We stayed at the Hilton Sorrento for 5 nights. What a treat. The grounds are gorgeous including the citrus grove as well as the fabulous outdoor pool area. One warning regarding the outdoor pool, we stayed in mid-May and the water was freezing. Apparently they do not heat the pool, so the water is uncomfortably cold early in the season.

The rooms are comfortable and well furnished, and rooms on one-side of the hotel have gorgeous views of the Bay of Naples. The food at the restaurant was excellent, if a bit pricey.

We had a wonderful time at the Hilton Sorrento! As a Hilton Diamond member, we were upgraded to an Executive Room with lounge access. We arrived early, so they had us wait at the Executive Lounge and what a greeting! The lounge has a fabulous patio, separate pool and a STUNNING view over the coast. We ended up spending many hours there - we view the lounge as an extension of our room (with free flowing beverages and all-day snacks) and that helped us fight off the jet lag (in the afternoons we would be so tempted to sleep if we were in our room). Breakfast in the lounge was yummy with eggs, bacon/sausage and decadent chocolate and cream-filled pastries (yum!) During the day, you can order more substantial food from the main restaurant in the lounge too (with a limited menu-not free). The hotel food is OK, but not awesome. Go to L'Antica Trattoria in the city center (awesome!) and stop off at Davide il Gelato (they have over 40 varieties of excellent gelato). The bustling city center is walking distance and the walk back uphill isn't too bad (the view comes with a price). However, it was far enough away where we would hesitate to venture out several times a day (as we might if we were in the city center). The room has the same great view as the lounge w/a small balcony. The separate shower was huge (w/a nice bathroom) and the room was modern and quite nice! I recommend the Hop-on Hop-off Sorrento tour - the city has a limited number of attractions and the tour was very scenic and a good way to spend a beautiful morning (on an open-top bus)! It starts at the train station - also walking distance. We strolled in the Hilton's extensive citrus groves too (be sure to take a look). They even gave us a big bottle of limoncello as a souvenir! All in all, a nice hotel with a superb Executive Lounge with a killer view!
