“Great Views but thats as far as it goes!!”
Reviewed 22 August 2011

Where do you start with this place.
Magnificent Views from the top 'deck' if as far as i will go...the hotel has the distinct feel of a cruise ship..not that of a 4 start hotel.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable week in italy, but much of this was spent out of the hotel on day trips to Capri, Amalfi, Positano, Pompei and so on.

The hotels bus runs at some questionable times. If your doing days trip then theres not enough trips from the pickup point to meet ferry times coming in any time after 6pm, which will leave you stuck in the town or face a 40 euro taxi up to the hotel. Dont try walking unless your really keen. Its doable one or two days but after full days out of the hotel it is a good hours trek up the hill...unless your after some warm weather training!

Food is generally good with cruise style waiter service and entertainment team members who welcome you to the restaurant, and try a bit of small talk on at the same time, in my opinion a bit over the top. Also entertainment during the day and evening is amateur at best. The west end it is not. And if you fancy some giant connect foor or Aqua box then its for you..

Room generally traditional in style and in good order, although not 4 star quality, and only 1 pool towel for the week?

The biggest problem with this hotel is the 'extras'. Everything costs. A sea view, around 70 EURO. And i counted only a handful that would give you the full sea view. the others are all obscured by hedges, walls etc or are at garden level with a hedge in front. so bring a step ladder if you get one of these rooms. It really is pot luck even if you book a sea view room.

As they have a captive audience up on the hill there are no local shops to buy basics such as water, and if you dare to bring some up from sorrento beware of the 5 euros a day charge to use the mini fridge within the room. As result we didnt use it but on departure i kindly left two bottles of beer in the fridge for future guests. We had settled our bill in the morning and checked out. Approaching the coach one of the receptionists chased me out waving a bill for use of the fridge for the full day! and charged me for a drink also! I assumed the maid was straight in there after us and passed this info on to the desk, which i felt was really underhand. As i didnt have time to explain, nor really wanted to argue over ten euros we paid and left.
We left on a rather sour point, but other than that a thoroughly enjoyable week.

Please dont be disheartened by this review, it is good hotel in a great location for views, but be warned, it has its flaws and by looks of things theres plenty of other great hotels in the areas. For the prices they charge i would expect a lot more and none of these questionable extra costs. Try the minerva, with still great views and walkable into the town of Sorrento.

My husband and I spent eleven days at the hotel president and it was made even more memorable by the friendly and efficient staff. The hotel itself is situated high in the hills overlooking the town and marinas of Sorrento. You could also see across to mount vesuvius whilst sitting on the beautiful roof terrace bar being served on with delicious Italian snacks. The hotels location provided stunning views and the town was accessible on foot within twenty minutes down hill. There is a bus service provided by the hotel which ended at 11pm back up from the town which was a little early for us!
The entertainment team of Mark, Natasha,Scott and Chrissy provided excellent games and activities throughout the day which helped to pass the time around the pool. By night they performed acts that could rival the Westend.
The holiday advisors Lee and Marcia were extremely helpful and approachable. Thanks to everyone at the hotel for making our honeymoon so memorable. I would advise anyone to spend their holiday there.

Situation of the hotel is both advantageous and simultaneously has a down side.
The situation allows stunning views of the Bay of Naples which can not be bettered in Sorrento. This however can be offset by the location being somewhat isolated meaning a reliance on a hotel bus ,last run 11pm.
Conclusion not for night owls.Excellent for relaxation and touring the many places of interest in the vicinity by boat or bus

Room Tip: Worth the additional cost to ensure a sea view

The Grand Hotel President cannot be faulted in my opinion for it's outlook which is a totally and utterly breathtaking view out over Sorrento and the islands of Capri. The hotel is situated near the top of a mountainside and overlooks the whole of the area. It also overlooks the helicopter taking water to drop on the hillside fires in the very hot weather. There's a courtesy bus which is free and takes you downtown regularly and picks its passengers up again on the way back up the very steep winding roads. Inside the hotel is very clean and well maintained and is being turned into a 'platinum' hotel next season.
The staff are very friendly and all try to speak the different languages of their guests. They were all very helpful when asked about anything. The food was very varied and lots of it to keep any appetite satisfied, there was two buffet dinners and a cocktail party for the guests and top staff members on one night. On the buffet evenings, the food is magnificent and varied and each lady guest is presented with a fresh rose on entering the dining room. Dress up for dinner.....nice. You will always be led to your table and waited on by first class waiters who will do their best to assist you in choosing food and wines while you eat looking onto the stunning view. Talk to them, they love it!
There's taster sessions in Limoncello liqueurs, free jewellery making for guests ( and you can take it home with you.) Learn to speak italian and make pasta, entertainment by the Thomson team who are all very talented singers and enthusiastic at getting all the guests involved. Of course if you want left alone to bask in the glorious sunshine, you can do this in utter peace on the roof sun terrace. This has a bar and showers when it gets just too hot to handle.
The rooms are okay, we had a rear facing room without the view but we didn't spend much time there so it didn't matter. The balcony facing walls were decorated with paintings and vines that made them pleasant to look at. Beds change with pristine white linen twice in our week's stay. Towels changed when you want them changed but as the hotel is trying to be 'green and environmentaly friendly' they would prefer not to change them too often.
There are mini bar fridges in the rooms and you have to pay to use them and the contents. Safes are included in the price. Plenty coathangers and hanging space in wardrobes. Any time we needed room service, ie. to help us with a blown fuse or how to set up the safe, we had someone there in minutes. There is room service for food and bar services but this includes a surcharge. We had half board and there is a cafeteria at the pool where you can buy snacks and drinks all day.
The pool side was kept tidy constantly by the charming barman come poolman. There's a Thalissotherapy Spa and we were able to have a shower there on our last day, we had hairdryers and clean towels as well as any complimentary toiletries we needed.
Every member of staff that we met was very polite, well mannered and helpful.
There are lots of padded comfy loungers all over the beautifully groomed gardens and through the hotel are lots of comfy seats to chill out with a book or use the wifi.
There's a variety of trips to explore Sorrento and the islands, lots of local bars and eateries for nights out and so many top designer shops to buy clothes, shoes, handbags and belts etc. to bring home some style! Go into the side streets which are very narrow and full of local produce and souvenirs.

We have just arrived back from staying at the Grand President Hotel. What can I say that has not already been said. Mark, Natalie, Chrissy and Scott the 'Entertainment Team' were fantastic very tallented young people, keeping us entertained throughout the day and the evening. Both my husband and I can honestly say this was one of the best holidays we have experienced. Lee and Marcia the Thomson reps do an excellent job too, they were extremely helpful when I (Diane) had to have dental treatment, as too were the Hotel reception staff. The Hotel food was excellent, our room over looked the front of the Hotel it was very clean and comfortable. This Hotel is run in a very efficient way and I would certainly recommend anyone to visit, we would have considered visiting again but understand the 'gold status of Thomson' is going to be changed to 'Platinum' therefore the entertainment we have thoroughly enjoyed will not exist!

This family owned hotel is top quality, Fantastic views across the Bay Of Naples to Mt Vesuvious so make sure you get a room with a sea view. Superb food, friendly staff, quality rooms combined to make this a holiday we wont forget. While you are there you must visit the Amalfi coast, Pompei, Mt Vesuvious and Capri. The hotel is situated high up on the cliffside and looks down on the town of Sorrento. A bus service runs between the hotel and the town for those (like me) who found the walk back up the hill a bit too strenuous. The alcohol prices were steep (8.50 Euros for a G&T) and the nightly entertainment was..... well lets just say I have experienced better. Anyway suffice to say that I wouldn't hesitate to go back there and have already recommended the hotel to a couple of friends who are planning a trip to Italy later this year.

Room Tip: Book a room with a sea view - costs a bit more but well worth it
