Grand Hotel President
Ranked #18 of 100 Hotels in Sorrento
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 11 July 2012

Just stayed in Sorrento at the the Grand Hotel President. Lovely hotel with just over 100 bedrooms. Sunbeds not the most comfortable, and sometimes not enough to go round but we managed! Very, very hot EVERY day - a nice change from the UK. Staff were excellent, very efficient and helpful. No internet connection unless authorised by reception, but this seems to be the same all over Sorrento - no wi fi down in town either. Food great, plenty to choose from. Boats to Capri over crowded - pay the extra to go on a smaller boat, it would be worth it! I am not very mobile and there are a few steps up and down to a couple of the bars, so not suitable for wheelchairs, but you could manage with a stick! Would love to go back but not in the height of the summer - too hot for me, but fine for my husband. I think May and early June or September would be perfect.

Myself and my wife decided to go to Sorrento for a vacation. We had checked out a few hotels and decided on the Grand Hotel President.

We wanted peace and quiet but also the option to enjoy what Sorrento had to offer. The hotel is situated a little bit south from Sorrento and up the hill. It is difficult to find but luckily we had our TomTom.

Upon arrival we had mixed feelings as it does not have this grand entrance with huge gates. What we discovered was that the hotel faces the sea and the entrance was technically at the back. By the way parking is free (some hotels will charge daily!).

The room was very comfortable with a balcony giving a beautiful vista of Sorrento and the bay of Naples. It smelled a little funny (stale air) but after opening the doors to the balcony it was gone very quickly. I put this down to us being there at the beginning of the season and the room not being used that much. The room itself had airco (as you would expect) a min-bar and flat screen TV.
The only thing I thought could have been improved is that when you use the little soaps and shampoos they are not changed daily. Laundry service was available with next day delivery. Dry cleaning was 5 euro..very cheap!

The restaurant was superb with an option to sit outside and take in the views. Good menu with fish, meat and pastas. Good staff and a very good wine list
There is food available at the poolside bar also which is very handy when you are spending a day lazing in the sun.
I have to say but we have never met friendlier staff. They were attentive and polite and would go out of their way to help.

They provide a free bus service which drops you into Sorrento and also picks you up. We used this a few times and found it ideal. The hotel is about 5-10 mins drive from the centre of Sorrento so there was no problem getting in and out (Sorrento is terrible for parking…use the car parks, there is one near where the bus drops you off we found).
The only ‘bad’ thing was that you could not order food and drinks from the same waiter. A little thing but it could be annoying when you want a drink after ordering food or vice versa. Also they tend to want to charge to the room. I can see their point but it makes your spending difficult to keep track of.

The breakfast was amazing!!! Fresh fruit, cheeses, cold meats, breads, muesli and if you were inclined…the makings of an English/Irish breakfast (beans, mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, eggs, fried bread, sausages, bacon, toast). So they did cater for a lot of tastes.

All in all this was a great hotel. I would go so far as to say I would return (my wife is already talking about it!)

Room Tip: choose a sea view otherwise your room will be facing the mountain face!

We have recently returned from a four night stay in the lovely Grand President Hotel in Sorrento everything was as we hoped it would be and more. Except for the odd niggling thing it was all excellent. The room was ground floor sea view with patio which was fine, a beautiful view. We would have preferred an upper floor with balcony but there
was not a lot in it to be honest. The reception, maid service, the pool bar and pool area, restaurant and bar were all excellent.
The food was very good. The stunning views, the relaxing ambience and the kind and friendly staff at this establishment made this a short but truly unforgetable stay. Would highly recommend and hope we can return in the future.

We have stayed in several hotels in Sorrento over the years but this hotel is definitely the best. The combination of location, friendly highly efficient staff, excellent food, beautiful superior sea view rooms with stunning views all give this hotel the 5 star rating it deserves.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a superior sea view room/it's well worth it.

This hotel is the best hotel we have ever stayed in. The staff were friendly and helpful. We have often eaten in restaurants where waiters give the impression that they have better things to do, but here in the President they made every meal delightful. The breakfast buffet was excellent, including a chef who produced the best omelette I have ever eaten while you had a free cookery lesson watching him! The public areas of the hotel were stylish and our room was spacious and comfortable. The views across the Bay of Naples were unbeatable. The pool area was well cared for by the attendant, and had a really beautiful terrace pool bar. Sorrento was extremely busy whilst we were there, and the position of this hotel was perfect - up above the town, away from all the noise, with beautiful views - and a complimentary bus service to town several times a day.

Room Tip: Many rooms facing the beatiful view of the Bay of Naples have full sun for much of the day.

I have visited the this wonderful hotel several times and have never been disappointed. The views, the food and wine, a wide choice of cocktails and drinks from the bar, the spotlessly clean rooms, the pool, all the facilities are outstanding, but the most important part of this hotel are the wonderful staff who cannot do enough for all their guests. Some people comment on the fact there are not sufficient courtesy bus journeys, but there is an enjoyable 15-20 minute walk down to the town (which I often do in preference to the bus journey) which has lovely views on the way (the uphill walk can be a bit tricky in hot weather), and there are local buses available a short walk from the hotel to the main road - tickets can be purchased at Reception. There was entertainment on in the hotel on some evenings and it was very enjoyable. I did not use the spa facilities on this visit but have done so in the past. The outstanding welcome and the fantastic views are what bring people back time and again, and I am looking forward to my next visit already.

We had a great stay at the Grand Hotel President. You can't beat the view, and the hotel is reasonably priced.
We chose this hotel because we wanted more of a resort style hotel rather than the big city hotels that you find in other parts of Italy. We loved the fact that the hotel had amazing views; a room with an Ocean View is worth the upgrade!!
Be sure to plan the travel time up/down the hill to get to/from town. When we first arrived in Sorrento via public transportation, we made the mistake of getting off the city bus too early when going up the hill. This forced us to make a 20 minute walk up the cobblestone hill with suitcases in humidity.
Same case when traveling into town throughout the day; the hotel shuttle bus is great but you must plan your travel time around the set shuttle departure time.
We thought the hotel was very reasonably priced for what you get.
Giovanni the bartender is the BEST! We were able to try his Limonciello and many other great drinks. He is friendly, helpful, and one of the sweetest Italian men you will ever meet!!
Thanks for the great stay!
