“Wonderful Hotel & Perfect Setting”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2012

We booked this hotel with high expectations and at lived up to them on all levels. We booked deluxe rooms (610, 611) which are on a high floor, with balconies overlooking the perfectly-maintained gardens and pool, and a tremendous sea view looking out to Marina Piccolo and the distant island of Capri. The rooms were spacious, well appointed and spotless, and service throughout the hotel by all staff was exceptional.

I contacted the hotel in advance, and managed to negotiate a slight reduction off the best Internet rate, and the Manager also threw in free parking for our hire car, which turned out to be a real bonus. If you are driving, make sure you pull up in front of the hotel and get them to unlock the gate, otherwise you will pass it and have to go around the one way system. You need your wits about you at all times when driving as cars and motorbikes will readily cut you up from all directions (be sure to pay extra for full insurance cover if you are renting a hire car in Sorrento and the Amalfi coastline).

We were travelling independently and glad we had the car, but Sorrento is very well connected with bus, boat and train systems. Positano and Capri were highlights, but for a jaw-dropping view be sure to pay a visit to the iconic Villa Rufolo gardens, in beautiful Ravello. A car is handy as Ravello is tucked away in the hills near Amalfi.

The only slight disappointment was the breakfast experience. There was a reasonable choice, but we just expected a bit more from a top hotel. The scrambled eggs on the buffet were regularly undercooked for our liking, but having said that, a chef was always on hand in the outside area cooking crepes, omelettes and eggs to order.

Overall, this is a fabulous hotel in a quiet location, perfectly positioned to explore Sorrento and the surrounding areas. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

A few restaurant recommendations:
1) Pizzeria Da Franco (the best in town, rustic and traditional, great for lunch).
2) Bagni Delfino in Marina Grande (great fish, fabulous setting on a pier)
3) Re Foods (new chic restaurant, lovely food, great service)
4) O Murzill (family run, tasty food, small but atmospheric, great house wine)
5) Da Gigino (popular and reliable, always busy)
6) Inn Bufalito (modern, great menu and specials board)
7) Davide Gelato (the best ice cream in Sorrento)

Room Tip: Book a high floor room, with a sea view balcony.

We stayed here for a week and were very happy with our stay. The building and grounds are amazing. Everything is immaculate and clean with ample choices of seating or lounging. The pool area and private beach(Wharf) are great but the water was a little cold so early in the season for us. The staff were good. The Front Desk staff were very proffesional but a little distant, for us it was the bar and resturant staff who made our stay the most welcoming! There was always a joke or a little italian lesson for us. We had sunset cocktails every night and enjoyed a few red wines late at night after returning from town. The cocktails were all very nice!!

Breakfast was great with a huge buffet selection and again the resturaunt staff were very good. Because we booked a prestige room for 7 nights we were given a free dinner but it was pretty ordinary. It looked as though most guests had included meals in their room to us as everyone seemed to be there every day. This seems a shame to us as the meal we ate was not as good as every other meal we had in town or in the surrounding villages and only Don Alfonso was more expensive than the price we would have paid if it had not been for free. It's only a short stroll into the main Piazza you would be mad not to try a new place every night!!

The room was fantastic, we were in the seaside of the hotel on the lower floors that are built into the cliff face so the blcony opened straight up to the sea. This meant our room was cool and quiet. The bed was quite hard which isn't my preference but otherwise it was great. It seemed like the room was serviced three times a day so fresh towels and bedding were always at hand.

It was a great trip for us and although we probably won't return to Sorrento if you're going you won't be dissappointed with the Ambasciatori

Room Tip: The road is very busy out the front so if you can afford it make sure to book a sea front room!!

Sorrento was our first stop (from the US) on a 1 month tour of Italy, France, and Spain to celebrate my 70th birthday. My wife and I flew into Rome, caught the train to Naples, and then the train to Sorrento (a bigger city than we had thought it was going to be). We spent 3 nights at the hotel which is about a 10 minute walk from the train station. It had just re-opened (April 1) for the season after being closed for the winter months, so everything was clean and polished. It is a truly beautiful hotel with a terrace and dining room overlooking the bay. The morning breakfast buffet (included in our room price) was truly outstanding. We had a room in the front part of the hotel, with a small balcony; we asked for an upgrade to the back (with a sea view), but were turned down as there was a large bus tour staying at the hotel. The hotel is not in the center of the town, nor high on a hill, but we we found it just a short walk to wherever we wanted to go! We took a day trip to Capri, which once you get away from the touristy crowds is a truly spectcular island, and we particularly enjoyed the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro (we also went to the Blue Grotto which we enjoyed because it was so unique). Finally, we made a day trip to the cities of Amalfi and Poisitano (the bus stop is situated right outside the train station), and found the entire trip along the Amalfi Coast to be very beautiful.

We are about to end our 18 day trip throughout Italy and our final destination is Sorrento....We spent it at the Hotel Ambasciatori and it has far exceeded all our expectations....We are literally right on the sea with a beautiful view of Vesuvius....The amenities are superior, the pool is lovely, and the swim platform right on the Bay of Naples is just a wonderful way to spend a relaxing afternoon...The staff here are world class, and have made our stay here one of the most memorable travel experiences we've had....The town of Sorrento, like all the other places we've visited has wonderful shopping and restaurants, the diffrence is there is an almost constant and panoramic view of the sea.....Go and enjoy this gem....and savor every moment here....its truly spectacular!

Room Tip: a room with a sea view...we are/were in Rm 607...and it was amazing..

We have had many visits to this Hotel and although we love the Hotel, staff and view we have noticed that Hotel guests are no longer their priority. There were 2 weddings in one week and when this happens guests are not allowed to use the terraces the wedding guests use. The most beautiful terrace is also reserved for guests dining a la carte. The Hotel restaurant has been beauttifully renovated but Hotel guests are no longer allowed to use the tables by the window as they are reserved for a la carte diners only. Even when there are no a la carte diners ( and we only saw 3 tables used in 10 days) guests are forbidden to use this area. We used to love having an early breakfast to sit by the window overlooking the sea and watching the small fishing boats below. This is now not allowed.Hotel guests are definitely not as important as the guest who arrive for the a la carte dining service or a wedding and you feel confined to the 2nd class areas. As many tables are now out of bounds for Hotel guests we often had to wait 30 mins for a table and as this was late, the staff were clearing up before we finished our meal. This should not be such a problem later in the year as the terrace can be used for dining when the evenings are warmer. The staff are still great and Gerramo ?? the young bar man, was so courteous and professional. So was Sergio....apologies if names spelt incorrectly. The bar area has been refurbished and is now much more appealing. The Hotel still charges for the safe which is apalling. The gardens are lovely and the new terrace for drinks is great however in the summer when the Hotel is busier the area for sunbeds will be greatly decreased. Would we return????....I will be reading this site very carefully to see how guests who have been before rate the Hotel and I will watch for future changes.

Room Tip: If you think you will use a balcony to sit and enjoy the view then do pay for an upgrade otherwise s...

The first thing you cannot fail to notice is the fact that the hotel is immaculate and spotless!
Both indoor and outdoor spaces are clean and so well maintained.

The room, we had a see view room, was also clean and well maintained - nice furniture and great bedding. Electric shutters reveal the most amazing view over the bay and a fantastic balcony.

The staff were fantastic and the service second to none... nothing was ever too much trouble. The restaurant was also great, with fantastic views over the bay, again excellent service and food....

Breakfast on the terrace was equally good - although the scrambled egg was a little undercooked! The rest of the selection is very good and plentiful

Location is great too - a short walk into the centre of Sorrento, with all its fantastic cafes, bars and restaurants. The reception staff recommended a great restaurant and even arranged free transfer to and from...

All in all a real suprise - the hotel, the staff, the location was great - can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Unless you are going to spend a lot of time in the room - think about whether it is worth paying the...
