Grand Hotel Ambasciatori
Ranked #11 of 100 Hotels in Sorrento
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 6 August 2014

The Ambasciatori is beautiful. I travel frequently on business and do not wax lyrical about hotels, but this one is the exception. The common areas are tasteful, spacious and stylish. the pool and garden areas are stunning but it is the "beach" area at the base of the cliff where the Ambasciatori is located, which got most of our time. We spent many pleasant hours sunbathing and swimming in the calm, warm sea water.

The views from the dining room, beach and outdoor areas are stunning all day. My wife and I made a point of watching the sunsets as many evenings as possible.

We witnessed a wedding during one such evening that we agreed was probably the most perfect we had ever seen.

The staff are friendly, polite, professional and helpful - no need to say more here.

The Hotel is around one mile from the Piazza Tasso - an easy 15 minute walk for most and is within walking distance of the bus & train station.

The hotel is not cheap, but well worth the money.

Just be aware that the road behind the hotel is very busy and quite noisy - so street facing rooms are not quiet. There is a community football stadium opposite the hotel, which seems to run 7 nights a week, but while these issues bothered me on the first day, the hotel soon works it's magic and these become a minor issues.

Would we stay here again? Hell yes!

Room Tip: There are great sea facing rooms, but they are more expensive. Study the hotel website and you will...

We stayed at the GHA for our main summer holiday this year. All I can say is the hotel, the service, location, staff and food was just perfect.

I had paid for a partial sea view room at the minimum and requested a higher floor if possible. We were allocated a fantastic full sea view room on the 3rd (top) floor with a balcony and given this is a cliff top hotel, we looked directly out to the ocean.

The room itself was beautiful with tiled floors an amazingly comfortable bed, electric shutters for the full length doors/window out to the balcony that could be controlled from bedside and the bathroom was nicely finished too.

We generally like a good quality hotel and to get dressed up for dinner. Le Muse, the restaurant at the hotel had a terrace with sea view dining. The Menu was excellent with extensive options and daily chef specials that added a twist on existing dishes and introduced some new ones along the way.

While not cheap, the hotel were offering a coupon system where you could take 3 vouchers and if you had three dinners at the hotel you would get a discount. Our love affair with this hotel started with the restaurant. Salvatore was friendly with a touch of humour and made us feel very welcome. From there we got to know many of the waiting team. Giovanni, the maître d was very accommodating and even opened the restaurant early so we could dine and get to an engagement in town. Franco, Gennaro, Valentino all become "friends" and offered professional and friendly service. The dining location and quality of the food is highly recommended and worth the cost in my opinion.

The bar service was also excellent and we were looked after by another Gennaro and Tonnio who made us special liqueur coffees that we like and were friendly and helpful. Try the planters punch cocktail - its amazing.

The check-in team also were friendly and efficient - we got to know Ermelinda who gave us good local information and the hotel had packaged a good set of information that helped us navigate the local area and public transport systems.

The hotel is spotlessly clean, has a nice pool area and outdoor terrace (try the grill night where the food is cooked for you at the back of the terrace) and the staff are amazing. You won't be disappointed.

If I had to be really picky and to give the hotel team a couple of areas for feedback:

A table reservation system for Le Muse would take the pressure of trying to get to one of the four sea-side tables when the restaurant opens. It would also be good if the hotel could offer a complimentary shuttle service from the airport or even a boat shuttle from the port to the hotel's beach.

We will be back - Thank you GHA for a fantastic hotel experience!

Room Tip: High Floor with a sea view. 3rd floor is top - if you want as hot tub on the balcony then you need...

We've stayed at the Ambasciatori several times now over the past 9 years, and this year feel that it has improved a lot. Initially, when we first stayed at the hotel, we had excellent holidays, but a couple of years ago felt that we were no longer of paramount importance, as there were too many wedding receptions held which took precedence over the holiday guests. We were held up in the dining room on several occasions, awaiting the end of the wedding breakfast and sometimes felt too rushed.

This year, however, things had changed. Only a couple of wedding receptions during our fortnight took place, and the menu had had a complete re-vamp, offering a vast range of a la carte selections (all of those sampled by us were delicious). The service wasn't hurried in any way and in fact, we were delighted to welcome back one evening during our stay when a grill was taking place on the splendid terrace. (Almost comparable to the grand buffet evenings of the past.)

The rooms had been upgraded somewhat, and although this time we did not stay in a sea-facing room, we felt comfortable, clean, and everything that you could need was available, from a safe (now free of charge) to small toiletries, a minibar and a good chambermaid service.

The sunbeds around the pool are quite delightful (wide and comfortable) and indeed those on the private beach, although less plush, are adequate for their use. Lunches down at the beach café are very good, and the service is good, too, as is it at the poolside restaurant.

We did choose a bed and breakfast stay at the Ambasciatori this year and found that we enjoyed this very much, as we could, in fact, purchase vouchers for 3 meals weekly in the hotel at a reduced rate. This turned out to be very good value.

I can heartily recommend this hotel which has an unbeatable view of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius. The staff offer a superb service, and always with a ready smile.

As a person who travels over 100 nights a years, I can say this hotel was at the top in all areas, we visited in mid June. I would say be sure to have a sea view room. with balcony Jacuzzi if possible, after a long day exploring we really enjoyed watching the sun go with a glass or two of wine from the Jacuzzi. Then it was just a short 10 min walk to the square with plenty of dinning choices. pleasant night life, great weather.

Room Tip: Sea view room with balcony

We visited the hotel at the end of July 2014. It proved to be a good choice of hotel for our first visit to Sorrento. The room selected, although advertised as a garden view gave a good view of the bay of Naples from the balcony. The service provided by all members of staff was warm, friendly and efficient. The gardens are well kept and provided a number of quiet places to take in the stunning view. We did a number of visits during the week to Capri, Pompeii, Herculaneum and to Mount Vesuvius and so only used the sunbathing areas twice during the week. We are likely to return to make more use of the good facilities provided by the Ambasciatori. Recommended.

A lovely hotel in a fabulous location. A ten minute walk to the main square and shops and a five minute walk to the local train station. The hotel was very clean and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. They were all very polite and welcoming. Excellent beach/pontoon area for sunbathing with great beach bar. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

I can't say enough about how nice this hotel is. Our room was immaculate, the staff was friendly and accommodating, and the property is just absolutely beautiful. Everything we had to eat in the restaurant was magically delicious including breakfast, and the main dining room has a stunning view of Mount Vesuvius from every table. They have a lovely pool, reliable elevator, and really nice room amenities. Everything smelled good, was bright and sunny, and made us feel like we made an excellent choice.

Room Tip: It seems from other reviews that some of the rooms might not have a nice view. We stayed in room 52...
