“We will return to Sorrento - and this wonderful hotel”
Reviewed 27 October 2011

The Bellevue Syrene with its stunning location and pheonomenal views of Vesuvius and the pumice cliffs of Sorrento was our dream hotel for a dream holiday. From the moment we arrived down the vine-covered walkway, we were entranced. We enjoyed freshly squeezed orange juice on the terrace and drank in the panorama while our luggage was brought to our room.

We had chosen a deluxe sea view room, and it was perfect: decorated in blue tones with quirky furnishings, a mini library and a large and well-appointed bathroom with a very generous selection of La Source Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries, a separate walk in shower, and best of all, a view of Vesuvius from the king size bed. Despite being so centrally located, it was quiet, with only the sea sounds and the occasional ship's horn breaking the silence. Service was excellent, and the room was refreshed several times a day.

The reception rooms in the hotel were special as well, as you can see from the photos - decorated in a style in keeping with the hotel's name, lots of mermaids, ships' sculptures, seashells, coral, etc. with lavish Murano glass chandeliers and opulent soft furnishings.

While the hotel has no pool, it has its own swimming deck down on the sea. Unfortunately, this closes quite early in the day in October because it loses the sun around 3 PM, so you can't swim much after that. It's a bit of a walk, too, but we didn't mind as it was quiet and quiet private.

We dined in the restaurant a couple of times. The food was good, not fantastic, but the atmosphere on the terrace, with views over Sorrento and back to the Naples night time skyline, was wonderful. The discreet piano music added to the ambiance. Even if you don't stay at the hotel, the restaurant is worth checking out for the views, especially if there's a fireworks display on for the cruise ships.

Breakfast was excellent, served in a large room with floor to ceiling windows affording more lovely views. There was a huge choice of food options, and freshly squeezed orange juice you made yourself with a machine that was fun to use!

Service was good - not the friendliest we encountered (outside of the housekeeping staff, who were very friendly), but efficient. English is spoken well, better than you'd expect from their website!

There is also a small spa with a good range of treatments.

The hotel has a real sense of bygone times and the luxury of the Grand Tour, and it played a major role in ensuring Sorrento was one of the best holidays we've ever had.

Room Tip: We think we got one of the smaller deluxe rooms, room 407, so you might want to ask when booking. Th...

First impressions were outstanding, the views were breathtaking. We arrived and the receptionist greeted us by showing us to a table on a terrace with a glass of champane and took care of all of the details while we rested and toasted the views. We stayed in a "lift suite, rm 501" which means that the elevator opens into your living room. The room was beatuful and huge to say the least. I was disappointed that when I tipped the bellhop for our luggage, i gave him 20 euros and asked him for 10 back which he said that he would get change and never came back. He spoke very good english and understood, so that dissapointed me and raised a red flag. The room was arranged stangely due to the fact that you had to walk throught he bedroom and the master bathroom to get to the huge terrace. We were traveling with another couple and they thought that it was weird as well.Breakfest was great and the views were fantastic! Overall, this hotel was the nicest hotel that we stayed at in europe but we did not get the friendly "How can we help" spirit from the staff with the exception of the first greeting. Don't get me wrong the staff was there when we needed them, and helped us a lot but just that feeling of we are interupting them was there. We left this hotel and went to Capri and stayed at the La Scalinatella which doesn't have the wow of this hotel but the service and greeting by name every day will blow you away.

Room Tip: You really do not need a suite the rooms are huge. We traveled with another couple and they had a s...

This hotel is absolutely breathtaking. It is in an historic building overlooking the sea. The rooms, staff, amenities etc.were all excellent. It was expensive but you got your moneys worth. I would recommend it to all who want a unique experience.

We stayed here for two nights as part of our honeymoon and you really couldn’t ask for more. The service was absolutely flawless – attentive and friendly, yet discreet.

The breakfast selection was fantastic, and the sea view from the dining room was breath-taking.

On our first night we stayed in the Rocco suite – as stunning as it looks in the pictures. The suite is huge and you have your own Jacuzzi pool. It’s obscenely expensive and not particularly practical, but for a one night blow-out special occasion it was great fun.

We then moved to a superior room which was gorgeous – very stylishly designed with a large bathroom and sea view balcony.

We ate on in the terrace restaurant one night and the food was very good, but not fantastic. Service again was impeccable and the wine list was enormous.

The hotel also has a ‘club lounge’ where residents can enjoy free wine/prosecco and snacks throughout the day. It’s a really nice touch and gives you another excuse to laze around the beautiful courtyard area.

Great location too – right in the centre of Sorrento. The only average experience was the ‘beach platform’ a long walk from the hotel and not the nicest sun loungers. So if you’re interested in sun bathing it’s probably not the best, but personally I’d much prefer to enjoy the sun from the stunning grounds of the hotel anyway.

The entrance to the hotel is beautiful, with a short walk under a vine-covered walkway to the reception area, with the hotel’s al-fresco restaurant located on the right.
The room and bathroom were both very spacious and airy, and a separate walk-in wardrobe/dressing room was a pleasant surprise and really appreciated. Our balcony had two separate French windows and a table and chairs, and like our room, had the most breath-taking view overlooking the Bay of Naples with Mount Vesuvius beyond.
The breakfast was very, very good and the breakfast room had the same amazing views as our room.
As an added treat, there is an al-fresco club lounge with free food and drink available from 10am until 9pm every day. The hotel also has a lift which transports guests directly down to the beach.
Dinner in the hotel restaurant was a very enjoyable dining experience, with good food in a setting of amazing beauty.
This hotel was a highlight of our trip, as was a trip on the Orient Express from Venice to London.

My family and I recently had dinner at the restaurant at Bellevue Syrene. We timed our reservations so we would be there as the sun set over Mt. Vesuvius and it was worth it. Delicious dinner, great service and a beautiful view.
