“Lovely Hotel”
Reviewed 12 September 2008

This hotel is spectacular in location and privacy and quiet. Classy, elegant, and well-positioned for an excellent stay in every regard except for one: the restaurant. Sadly, as much as we delighted in our room, our view, our experiences at this hotel, the only sole--and severe disappointment--was the quality of food at both lunch and dinner. Breakfast is complimentary with room rate, and is bountiful with scrambled eggs, hot meat dishes, yogurts, toast, cereals, fruits, etc.--as well as omelettes cooked to order. Other than that, you may be hard pressed to find a delicious meal at either lunch or dinner. We at our first lunch and dinner there on day one, and after that, we searched our way through Sorrento town to find superior dishes--at much better prices. Ristorante Lanterna Due is exceptional--a short walk from the hotel. Other than this huge disappointment--worsened moreso by the fact that the outdoor terrace restaurants for both lunch and dinner are stupendous in view and tranquility--we adored the Bellevue Syrene and would return again in future--again, eating elsewhere other than breakfast. We had Room 521--a beautiful large corner room, large bathroom, walk-in shower--with two terraces, one being exceptionally huge and quiet. Absolutely adored our visit at this hotel--if only the management would employ a chef of the first order.

Just got back from a week in this beautiful hotel and we are wishing we could be back there already! We booked a classic sea view room but were, we think, upgraded to a deluxe. Nothing beats walking into the room for the first time, opening the doors to the spacious balcony (we were on the top floor) and looking out over the Bay of Naples and Vesuvio in the background. Would certainly recommend having a sea view room to take advantage of that.

Breakfast was great - pastries, breads, chocolate tart and cake! We ate in the hotel restaurant a few times and were very impressed. Not cheap but very good quality and service - we didn't have better in town. Of course, you also get the view... Drinks on the terrace were also fantastic. Of the places in town, we found Da Gigino to be the best - superb pizza straight from the wood oven.

The hotel itself is the perfect balance of traditional touches with modern convenience and style. The piano bar and lounge are pretty stunning. A private "beach" is also accessible from a lift near reception.

Out and about we visited Pompei (get the train €3 return) which was great; Herculaneum (again, get the train same price) which is a smaller, better preserved version of Pompei; Capri - very beautiful and exclusive but also very crowded at the port; and Positano (get a local bus for €3, much better than slow ferry which we did on way there).

A mark of how famous the hotel is that the tourist "train" that runs through the town stops there for tourists to take pictures!! We would highly recommend it to anyone going to Sorrento.
