“Excellent Hotel”
Reviewed 1 July 2012

We stayed in May and only just got around to writing the review.

This hotel is simply stunning, The views from the terraces and our bedroom were amazing.
Staff were also amazing,. Nothing too much trouble. Very professional in every way.

We paid extra for a full sea view and were not dissapointed. If you can afford it for a special occasion it is well worth it.

The food was good, but not perhaps every evening, but generally it was good. Just sometimes it was a little bland, but this is the only negative about the hotel. The Gala Buffet was very good. Also breakfast was really fabulous, Prosecco served every morning, what a treat. Lots of choices, omelettes were wonderful and cooked by a lovely smiley, charming lady.

But other than a couple of not so good meals a lovely hotel with a sense of Italian opulence but without the stuffines.

Well done Grand Royal

We would definatley go again.

Room Tip: If you can pay for a sea view, its well worth it.

Whenever I write a review on the trip advisor it is always an account of my personal experience of the place I am visiting and this is my experience of the Grand Hotel Royal.
Booking 8 months in advance I really thought made a difference to personal requests in a hotel but clearly it doesn't with the Grand Royal. Especially as we were celebrating two 50th birthdays which was the reason for booking.
On arrival at the hotel - which was 9-30 pm we were greeted with more of a statement than welcome. We were told the restaurant was closed and there was a plate of food in our room - given the room number and handed the keys. That was our welcome greeting. Not told which direction the room was or what time breakfast was or any other information.
We went to our room via the lift and discovered it was on the 3rd floor. We actually requested a ground or low floor when we booked but obviously this was not considered in any way.
The plate of food left in our room was a platter of cold meat, stale rolls and a piece of cake. We didnt even bother. We just left the hotel and found somewhere to have a hot meal after a day of travelling.
In the morning when we opened the blinds we were quite shocked to see that the view we had was of overgrown olive trees, a 20 foot aerial and a brick shack. Not a pool or garden view as requested. And the balcony was so small we actually couldnt sit on it.
I didnt want to waste time complaining and moving rooms because i really dont think they would have been interested anyway - so we decided just to accept the incosiderate small room with no view or balcony on a high floor.
I think though the biggest disapointment was the food in this hotel. Reading the reviews on here I really thought we were in for a treat, but that certainly was not the case.
The food was repetative and unvaried. The menu was very small and consisted of the same ingrediants every night - Fish, Veal, Beef for main courses with a palm full of veg. I enjoy my food and have a good palate but I found that most of the food dishes I had in this hotel were actually quite bland and overcooked. the desserts were the same, repetative and what was left over you would find at breakfast. The portions were very small and I can honestly say I think they were catering for the under 5's and the over 70's. I actually hardly ate any food that was served to me and we used to go out later and get something decent to eat. There is a salad bar which is usually empty and also a veg bar where you can help yourself to cold veg if you enjoy that with your meal. The drinks service in the restaurant is poor and slow and the prices of the wines are a rip off when you see how much they are in the supermarket. On our last night the drinks came after we finished our starters and had started our main course. I sent the bottle of wine back complaining that it was of no use now that I had almost finished my food. the waiter was rather disgruntled about this but that is not my problem. They need more waiting on staff and also need to take the drink orders before they take the food orders. Breakfast was repetative too and no variation at all, It actually became quite boring.
I also made a genuine observation throughout the hotel and not just in the restaurant. If you are French you will get a much better service and interaction with the staff and not just a fleeting hello.
The prices of the drinks in the bar area are also a rip off. Almost 20euros for two shorts and mixers and they were small measures too. I have stayed in some very exclusive 5star hotels and not paid those prices. So it is just as nice having a stroll into town and sitting in a nice bar for half the price..
The entertainment is on for only 3 nights a week and is to be avoided unless you are a jazz enthusiast and like to be rocked to sleep. There is far more going on in town and the bar in the hotel closes at 12 on the dot so dont be staying out late boys and girls.
On one evening the "guest lounge" was closed off for a private function as was the terrace. This is a lounge and terrace that we the guests pay to use when booking in this hotel so how on earth can they then inform us it is out of bounds for a private function. I actually was quite disgusted with this. And was even more disgusted when I saw a man trying to move the huge planters - that they used to divide the terrace for the "private Party" - so he could get his wife in her wheelchair through to the larger door area Shame on you Grand Royal for allowing this to happen.
I think though that even more disappointing was that the hotel had been informed that we were celebrating two 50th birthdays while we were there, I know the manager in Thomas Cook emailed them two weeks before we were due to arrive to remind them of this And yet there was no acknowledgement whatsoever.
This is my account of my stay at this hotel. And while I love Sorrent and all it has to offer and will probably return again as I have before. I would not stay at this hotel or recommend it to anyone. The price we paid for the holiday and what we spent could have afforded us something far superior than this. And without the £500 extra they wanted for a room with a sea view.

On the positive side the Royal occupies a really excellent location - close to the centre of town but with stunning views of the Gulf of Naples. The facilities are generally of a high standard including reception areas, gardens and pool areas. The bathing platform which accessed via a lift is especially nice. Rooms are clean, a good size, reasonably equipped although could have done with a bathrobe.

Breakfast was probably above average for Italy. HB dinners were ok - functional and uninspiring but lunch on the panoramice terrace was a real pleasure. The best dinner of the week was the gala buffet on the terrace - it's a shame they don't use this facility more often.

One area where the hotel does excel is service - we found every single person in the hotel helpful, pleasant and service orientated. This included the team behind the desk (Stefano particularly), those in the restaurant (Toni & Franco), pool & bathing area (Francesco) and the girls cleaning the rooms - a really great team.

On the downside the hotel's charges for a safe box and the internet were over the top - they should be free in a hotel of this quality. There were also silly rules such as "one towel per person" and " having to go reception each day to sign for minibar purchases" which were irritating. We were on half board arrangements which we found inflexible. Most hotels allow you to swap HB Dinner for lunch or the a la carte option - at the Royal you are allowed one change per holiday. This was particularly irriting because some evenings we saw guests being turned away in the evning because the dining room was full. Being a bit more fleible would help reduce the pressure.

So overall - a really good hotel but beware the rules! I would definitely go back but on B&B terms.

Room Tip: Absolutely go for seaview & high floor.

We visited Rome initially and left earlier than scheduled due to issues with the hotel and travelled by train to Sorrento. Despite a poor start to our holiday accommodation the Grand Hotel Royal lived up and beyond our expectations due to its location, facilities, staff etc etc the list is endless needless to say we will be returning in the future. This hotel is luxurious and was a perfect end to our holiday.

The Grand Hotel Royal is simply stunning. The decor is beautiful. We stayed in a Prestige Room for 4 nights. Room 519. Our room was ready earlier than expected when we arrived at 12.30pm. There was a complimentary fruit basket waiting for us in there. Huge, comfortable bed, automatic shutters on the outside so you can completely block out daylight if you so wish, his and hers sinks in a separate area from the loo, bath and shower, which was useful. Very large balcony. Each evening the maid would come in and turn the sheets down for you and leave us chocolates!

The Reception staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The views over the bay of Naples from the terrace and our room on the 5th floor are stunning. Sunset is a must to watch. Marina Piccolo is just below to the left side of the hotel.

There is a huge buffet breakfast each morning. Everything you can think of! Ham, cheese, bread, fruit, toast, yoghurt, cereal, pastries and eggs cooked fresh for you if you want them fried to go with the bacon, sausage etc but mainly there to prepare omelettes, which I can highly recommend!

The location is superb. If you arrive into Sorrento by train or bus the station is simply a 350m walk away, across the road outside the hotel and straight ahead. Tasso Square is no more than 5 minues walk and the nearest supermarket is about 300m. We deliberated for hours over which Grand Hotel to chose, the Ambasciatori, De La Ville or Capodimonte but we are so pleased we picked the Royal as we did a walk around all of the choices on the last day there and the Royal has by far the best views coupled with location. The pool and lido (private beach) areas are both nice places to relax. Loved the idea that the sunbeds have a built in sunshade you can use to cover your head if you so wish! Brilliant idea.

Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone and would certainly not hesitate to return in the future.

Room Tip: All balconies appeared to be roughly the same size. We were on the 5th floor of 6 floors. Really wor...

My wife and I had a fantastic experience at the hotel,we had a fantastic choice at breakfast, lots of cereals, cooked breakfast including omelettes cooked to order and a huge choice of fruit and pastries. Our room (6th floor) overlooked the square which was pleasant, the room was cleaned to a high standard. All the reception staff were friendly especially Salvatore, he was very helpful and informative. The views from the grounds were amazing and lovely.

The only down side were the local restaurants, the food was bland and unimaginative.

We highly recommend the walk up Mount Vesuvius, amazing views and helpful guides.

We have just returned from a second visit to this outstanding Sorrento hotel. It is set in a great location at the top of the cliffs overlooking the Bay of Naples. The staff were very helpful and attentive and the food excellent. Highlights included five days with the complete absence of rain, magnificent sunsets over the sea and a superb buffet dinner on the Monday night. Recommended trips out are to Ravello (just outside Amalfi) - easily reached by bus and the island of Ischia (9.30 ferry), very much less busy than Capri. The highlight on this trip was La Mortella - the magnificent garden created by Lady Susana Walton. Paradiso!

Room Tip: Go for a sea view if you can afford it!
