“A wonderful stay at the Grand Hotel Royal”
Reviewed 5 October 2013

What can I say, our stay with the Grand Hotel Royal was all and more than we expected. The hotel was immaculate, the staff friendly and polite, and our sea view room excellent. We were there on a bed and breakfast basis so didn't sample the evening meals, but the breakfasts were great, catering for all nationalities and thanks especially to Patrizia for her lovely eggs and omelettes, cooked on demand. I always had to end my breakfast with a cake or fruit tart which were delicious (not something I do at home).
If I was really pushed to criticise something it would be our bathroom which could do with an update but having said that the shower was powerful and everything worked so no complaints really.
The location of the hotel was spot on too, with the train and bus station about five minutes walk and the main square in Sorrento about the same distance. Would urge anyone going to Pompeii or Herculaneum to catch a train as it's so easy and cheap and a bit of an adventure.
To sum up, we would not hesitate to return to the Grand Hotel Royal as it's one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in. Oh, and we must mention the gentleman on reception who without fail handed us our key without asking the number of our room. How's that for personal service!

Third visit to this hotel which speaks for itself. Lovely situation on the cliffs overlooking the sea.
Rooms are clean and well serviced; breakfast is excellent. The staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. The hotel is well within walking distance of the centre of Sorrento. Highly recommended

We stayed 4 nights at this hotel and wish we could have stayed longer. We didn't book a sea view room but there's plenty space to sample the fantastic sea view which includes mount vesuvius and boats coming and going from the port, on the large terrace the rear of the hotel. Room was nice and very spacious. The pool is big and was almost all adults, only one or two children when we were there. There's no spa which I would normally use on holiday, but honestly I wouldn't have had time for it anyway when you consider you can day trip to pompeii (which was amazing) or a walk around hilly but beautiful positano, also capri which we didn't get time to visit. There's so much to see your time would be wasted at a spa.
Sorrento is a great town to visit, lovely atmosphere, lots of nice shops, streets pedestrianised in the evenings, good places to eat - a special mention for Faunos on piazza tasso, the main square only 5 mins walk from the hotel, which was really excellent.
Breakfast, what can I say, a great spread of everything you could want and I only wish I could have eaten more of the large selection of cakes so early in the morning. You self-serve your own tea and coffee here, but I didn't find this any bother, in fact I liked being able to make my coffee just how I liked it. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, but the cocktails are excellent. All staff very friendly and helpful. Would love to return to this hotel and stay longer this time.

Unreal location. Best service in a classic setting. Staff are warm and helpful. Rooms are clean and classic. Excellent breakfast. The beach is the best. All in the shadow of Vesuvius. Wonderful for a vacation. Walk to town for food and sights. Drinks at night by the med. The place oozes old world class and charm. The whole place is a joy to behold. The gardens are beautiful and coffe on the patio cant be beat. You will love it. Romance romance and more

Beautifully situated on top of a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean Sea, the hotel is tastefully appointed with gardens out of 1000 and One Arabian Nights, a magnificent pool, an elevator down through the cliff to sea level where there are deck chairs, umbrellas, a bar, private swimming area. The breakfasts are copious and delicious and leave nothing to be desired. (we did not eat dinners there) The staff is helpful and friendly. The rooms are comfortable and classically furnished. The location to the town, the Circumvesuvian train and the Grand Marina are convenient. This all makes for a memorable and marvelous sojourn

Stayed for 2 nights after flying internationally overnight. Stayed in a deluxe room overlooking the bay, great views, lovely gardens. Didn't use the pool. Room was well appointed, spacious, bright and clean. Loved the automatic black out blinds. Hotel is centrally located, only a five minute walk to town. Staff were friendly and helpful, we had a few light hearted conversations with them therefore they remembered us and were quite accommodating except when we found out that because of Italian money laundering rules we were unable to pay for the hotel with cash if your bill is over $1000.00. No exceptions so out came the credit card. We stayed in Italy for 2 weeks and were in 7 different hotels and it was one of the best. Sorrento was lovely, went to Capri for the day and took the train to Pompeii (very easy to do). The hotel arranged a car to pick us up at the airport and also for another car to take us to our next hotel in Praiano. Would recommend this hotel and would stay again.

Thank you for taking the time to post such a charming review of your stay at the Grand Hotel Royal.
We very much appreciate that you have highlighted some of the aspects that make our hotel so special.
Concerning the new italian money laudering rules, we are sorry, but we have to respect the law.

Went here for a special anniversary and after much research chose this hotel. From the moment we arrived it was clear this was something special. The public rooms and our basic room were spotless and were impressively furnished, loads of space and an air of sophistication . The staff were friendly and we were very impressed by our welcome.
Our room as I say was the basic they offer, couldn't afford the sea view. It was no issue though as we didn't spend too long in it, there is a road that runs at the back of the hotel but this did not disturb us in any way, the fab electronic shutters seemed to stop both light and noise!
The gardens are immaculate and lead to the most sublime terrace that looks out across the bay of Naples with Vesuvius dominating the skyline. As I say, who needs a sea view room when in a minute from your room you can look out over such a vista. Sitting there with a cool (though expensive) beer/glass of wine is a memory I will hold for a long time. If you fancy a swim there is the pool (which was chilly) or take the lift! Set to one side of the garden this takes you to sea level where a series of decks and terraces offers sunloungers a bar and private sea swimming, which was warmer than the pool! Fantastic!
The position of this hotel is perfect too, five minutes walk to the town centre or the train station it's simply spot on. We spoke to several others staying further out from the centre who were restricted by hotel shuttles or the excessive cost of taxis, to be able to stroll out and be almost in the centre of things was a big plus point.
Breakfast was terrific, huge selection served in the most wonderful dining room. We didn't eat in the hotel in the evenings as it was too expensive for us but the menu sounded impressive.
It was a special occasion for us and this hotel made for a truly memorable trip, not cheap but worth every penny, we'd go back tomorrow if we could!

Room Tip: Every room is great, consider if the step up in price for a sea view is really needed
