Absolutely the best view from any hotel that I've ever stayed in. It's well worth paying extra for a sea view and preferably on one of the higher floors. We stayed at the end of May and cannot wait to return. Completely faultless from start to finish. The hotel is situated in the ideal location, literally five minutes walk from the centre and just a couple of minutes from the train station.
Loved it!!

A sign of a world class hotel is the maintenance of excellence over time. The Grand Hotel Royal surpassed our expectations from two previous visits and proved itself to be a world class hotel. Ideally situated on the cliffs above the Bay of Naples overlooking Vesuvius and near the Piazza Tasso, it is an ideal location. Upon entry one is struck by a beautifully appointed reception area. The desk staff are not only consummate professions, but very personable and generous with their time in answering questions and assisting the guest in planning a wonderful stay in Sorrento. The sculpted garden is well maintained, as are the terrazzo area, pool area, and beach area. The large room is well appointed with beautiful furniture of inlaid woods so characteristic of the historic art of Sorrento. The floors of the room feature the ceramic tile work representative of Sorrento, as do the floors and walls of the large bathroom. The dining room of the hotel is elegant yet comfortable, suggestive of a Victorian sun room. The sumptuous breakfast has an abundant array of fruits, cereals, yogurt, pastries, meats and breakfast vegetable dishes, all enhanced with made-to-order frittata or eggs, made by the charming Patrizia. It is without comparison the best breakfast encountered in the many hotels we have stayed at in Italy. Dinner in the dining room is also a feast for the palate. Every staff member encountered in our stay were gracious, courteous, and accommodating, appearing to take pride in their role in making this extraordinary hotel what it is. The Grand Hotel Royal is truly an extraordinary hotel deserving of every award and accolade, and we are already anticipating our return for yet another extraordinary stay.

Room Tip: A room overlooking the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius is a must!!!

Dear Guests,
Thank you for all your beautiful expressions to describe the Grand Hotel Royal; we could use them for our advertising!
We are so happy you had a very good time at the “Royal” and that our place often gives special emotions to the travellers who come to stay with us!
Sorrento is one of the most famous holiday destination in Italy and the “Royal” is one of the most renowned hotel in the centre of the city. The comfortable rooms, the private beach, the centuries-old garden, the terrace with its amazing view, the great food, the wonderful restaurant, the staff professional and friendly,….; all these aspects render our hotel unique and exclusive.
Anyway, we know we are not perfect and we are continually striving to improve the hospitality we offer.
Assuring you since now our best attention to your next further visit for “another extraordinary stay”, may we take this opportunity to send our warmest regards.
Best Regards,
Giuseppe Massa

We stayed here at the end of May 2014 and are already trying to work out when we can go back! We had a fabulous view from our room (520) of the Bay looking towards Naples & Vesuvius and in the other direction towards Capri. Room service on the balcony watching the sun set was magical! The room was comfortable and the bathroom, whilst a bit old-fashioned in design, was perfectly functional.
The staff were friendly and helpful, especially those on the front desk and in the restaurant. Breakfast (included in our tariff) was extensive - cereals, fresh fruit & juices, cold meat & cheese, cooked food, pastries and cakes - including, unusually, profiteroles and chocolate fudge cake! Dinner was fine but we felt our main courses were a little disappointing on the one night we ate there. Room service was actually better (and cheaper) with lovely views but do be aware of the Seagulls! On our last night we ate at a restaurant in Sorrento (Cafe Latino) which was probably the best evening meal we had.

The train station is a 5-10 minutes walk from the hotel with frequent trains heading towards Naples which stop at stations close to Herculaneum (a 10 min walk down hill from the station - don't be tempted to take a taxi, not worth it!) and right next to the entrance to Pompeii. The trains are cheap - old and covered in graffiti but reasonably punctual.

From the hotel, it is about 10 minutes to walk down to the harbour to get a ferry/hydrofoil to Capri which is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: The extra charge for the sea view rooms is week worth it. Overlooking the main road on the other side of the hotel would be much nosier. Rooms on the upper floors probably best then you can see over the palm trees!

Dear Guests,
You have been so nice to describe your stay with such magnificent words and we are so glad that you have appreciated your experience.
We are pleased for all your kind words about the rooms which all carefully finished, prepared and controlled by our housekeeper; cleanliness is of utmost importance.
Thank you, as well, for your comment about the snack restaurant by the pool and your appreciation regarding the Breakfast room.
We are very surprised concerning your comment about the main course you had one night in the restaurant . During your stay we received no complaint from you about it.
Anyway as you know the tastes of the people differ and it is practically impossible that every guest appreciates the same dishes. For this reason our waiters, if advised by the guest, suggest a replacement that can satisfy the taste of the guests.
All the members of our staff are so thankful to have mentioned their attitude towards you during your stay. Thank you for this post, I'm happy to see that people appreciate our effort to make their stay as pleasant as possible and the funny thing is that we know we are not perfect and we can always improve and the important thing to do give you the best with a smile trying to solve any problem you may have!
Warmest regards
Giuseppe Massa

We were pleasantly surprised how lovely this hotel was, we were finding it very difficult to choose a hotel in Sorrento, but we definitely chose right with this one. We stayed in May 2014 for 5 nights. It is a bit pricey but you get what you pay for don't you. It is in an excellent location right at the front at the top of the cliffs, with amazing views. Beautiful grounds and walk down to the sea down the steps and through the tunnels, a lift (free) can bring you back up and it has very nice bathing platforms.
We had room 503 (sea view, spend the money on this if you can as its worth it) which had two balconies, one was huge overlooking the sea. We spent time each day just sat mesmerized, looking out at the view across to Naples and Vesuvius, from the balcony. The rooms are beautiful and everything looks quite new and elegant but they are designed in a slightly old fashioned way, but this is just my personal view.
We only had breakfast at the hotel but there was plenty of choice of good food and in beautiful surroundings. The hotel had the most lovely friendly and helpful staff too.
It is also only about a 5 minute walk from Piazzo Tasso, in a quieter area, so we thought this was an ideal location. The sea front aspect is excellent. We loved Sorrento and we will return and to this hotel so thank you very much for a wonderful holiday.

Room Tip: Room 503, two balconies, one is huge overlooking the sea, with two sunbeds and a table and two chairs.
