Staff is very hospitable and can not do enough for you. The breakfast buffet was delicious and the breakfast room was beautiful. So warm and cheerful. Once again, wait staff were all pleasant and happy to serve. Hotel and rooms were very clean. Very convenient to Sorrento centre. Enjoyed my stay and would recommend.

Just returned from a great week in Sorrento (despite losing 2 1/2 days to rain/clouds).
This was our first visit to the Royal, although we stayed last year at the sister hotel The Ambascatori and found that hotel fantastic but it was a bit further away from Sorrento centre.
The Royal has a wonderful location and the reception area and dining rooms were immaculate.
The bedroom was spotlessly clean but showed signs of age with rough plaster on the ceiling, but overall a very nice comfoprtable room with a fantastic view of the bay of Naples with Vesuvious immediately ahead and the port of Sorrento to the left.
Pool area had just about enough sunbeds to make it comfortable to find two.
The staff in all areas were incredibly helpful and friendly but the big problem area was in the dining room where there was an inordinate wait for the food to come up. The food itself had quite a varied menu and was good without being great.
One thing that was really irritating was the Gala night which had a set menu and was advertised to be at 7.30pm, We arrived on the dot so that we could get a window seat, which we duly did.
It took a while but we eventually placed our drinks order which came up in a reasonable time BUT we were waiting for the best part of an hour to get our starter (which was a cold fruit and scallops) and it was evident that they were waiting for all the guests to take their seats before starting the service.
As I mentioned the staff were incredible and it seemed to be the same waiting staff both at breakfast, lunch and at dinner and they worked hard and maintained there good humour and friendlyness BUT it was plain to see that management had cutback on numbers to save costs ?
In essence I think the hotel was a victim of its own success because it appeared to be 100% full
and they seemed to be catering for probably only 75%. My guess that is.
Another area of concern was that the hotel had two weddings and another private (kids party )during the week and it meant certain areas were out of bounds and coupled with wedding guests and especially the kids wandering through the hotel. Maybe a lot of people don't mind but I found this a little disrespectful to hotel guest.
Overall a very pleasant experience but would choose the Ambascatori in preference to the Royal.

Room Tip: A sea view room is well worth paying for.

Dear Guests,
Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback of your stay with us at the Grand Hotel Royal. We are glad that your stay with us were met with high standards, and allowed you to fully enjoy your time in Sorrento.
At the “Royal” it remains our main objective to provide guests with a comfortable stay and deliver a high level of service .Thank you for your words of appreciation especially towards our professional and friendly staff.
Anyway, it is needed to point out a few things:
Our delicious dishes are all freshly prepared as clearly shown on the menu so it is normal that you have to wait for the cooking time.
The candlelight dinner, very appreciated from our guests, is a very special evening organized for our customers with delicious italian specialities surronded by a romantic and elegant atmosphere and our guests are entertained by a violinist.
The restaurant opening time of the restaurant is at 19.30 and the dinner starts at 20.00; meanwhile the violinist entertains the guests and the waiters take orders for drinks.
There is no cutting staff at all as erroneously reported; the staff is present both in the morning and in the evening because the normal turn of work is not fixed but alternately they work in the morning, evening or morning and evening with an afternoon break.
Regarding weddings, we apologize if some children have not behaved appropriately, we are very sorry for it. We would like to point out that even though sometimes we have some external guests, are always guaranteed the space and privacy of our clients residents. Regarding your room, we apologize. Year after year we are renovating all the rooms and we are now at 90% of the work. Our hotel, being very much in demand and beloved is almost always fully booked. If the ceiling in your room was cause of distress, it was enough to tell me about and I'd be happy to change your room; we are always available to meet the needs of our valued customers.
We all look forward to seeing you again on your next visit to Sorrento.
Yours sincerely

We travelled to Sorrento last week for a romantic 5 days to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary.

Having survived the transfer from Naples airport thanks to the careful driving of Ciro from Leonardo Travels (dodging the chaos and suicidal scooters around us), we walked into the elegant and cool (in both senses) Grand Royal lobby to be greeted warmly by the reception staff, checked in quickly and shown up to our deluxe sea view balcony room.

Having made a real effort to research and find a special place for a special holiday we were delighted that (for us) the hotel ticked every box and that view - just stunning!

First the minor points (and they were trivial for us) - the flaky wi-fi signal in the room, low-power hairdryer (take your own if you care), evening meal prices (if you're watching the pennies) and lack of tea and coffee making facilities (just take a travel kettle and buy/take some supplies like we did).

There are enough reviews detailing the good points but in summary - for us:
- The hotel was spotlessly clean eveywhere;
- Lovely big room with special floor tiles, great shower and bath, air-conditioning which we didn't need thanks to just enough of a sea breeze, and that view of the bay of Naples and Vesuvius dominating the skyline - what a sunrise and sunset!
- Elegant and spacious lobby and public rooms with plenty of comfy chairs if you really need to get out of the heat;
- We didn't eat in the hotel in the evenings but breakfast was excellent - good choice (a whole table just for cakes !?), fantastic service from Antonio and his team (very friendly and efficient), lovely conservatory-style room looking over the gardens, AND special mention to Patrizia working hard at the hot plates cooking fried eggs, scrambled eggs or her "set you up for a tour of Pompeii" omlettes!
- Beautiful gardens and terrace overlooking the sea;
- Good size pool with as many sun loungers as was practical and the largest, fluffiest towels laid out first thing but also always available from the pool bar;
- Sea level lido served by steps down the cliff or the lift tunneled into the cliff;
- Perfect location on the cliff-top and very peaceful in June if you have a sea-view room and yet only a five minute stroll into the central piazza (Piazzo Tasso) in town;
- Did I mention the view from the gardens and the room?
- Natural shade in the gardens provided by Lemon and Orange trees.

We spent many pleasant hours sat on the balcony with a drink watching the activity down in the ferry port with the ferries coming and going and cruise ship tenders shuttling their passengers back and forth and just enjoying the view.

Other Sorrento comments:

Every night is a busy night in Sorrento town centre - just go with it and enjoy the buzz.

Take good walking shoes, plenty of drinks and an umbrella (it was very hot even in June) if you are visiting Pompeii and allow 4 hours to see a good part of it. The train out of Sorrento is cheap and cheerful but don't expect to get a seat - the line is heavily used by locals and tourist alike.

Recommend a boat trip to Positano - a beautiful town on the south side of the Sorrentine peninsular - but be careful if you're in a rush to get back as the 15:30 ferry back was twice the time as the morning outbound trip.

Thank you Grand Hotel Royal - we had a perfect anniversary and hope to be back soon :-)

Room Tip: Save up and book a sea-view room - they are quieter than the north (road-side) and the view is well...

This hotel is highly overrated.
First, it is too expensive for what you get.
Second, we found hair and blood on the sheets and had to talk to the housekeeper to change them.
Third, the average age of the customers is around 70 years. So younger people feel unwelcome.
Fourth, when they call a taxi for you , they take a cut (this was told to us by the taxi driver who picked us up) If this is true, this is unacceptable completely.
Fifth, their front desk people are arrogant and unhelpful.
Sixth, the wifi service is spotty and very complicated. You have to follow long procedures and you get disconnected often.
Seventh, the pool area needs renovations. It is very rundown.
Stay at your own risk.

Room Tip: Rooms in the hotel next door are good

We hope this review has been written by mistake otherwise is the most false and vile we have ever read. Our hotel is considered exceptional as all our services.
Our staff is known to all customers as very friendly and professional and we really care about the cleanliness of every area of the hotel (the history of the sheets is simply an invention of this mysterious customer). With regard to the words pronounced by a taxi driver, we can only say that , we have a special partnership agreements with one of the most valued Limousine and Car Service Company based in Sorrento; we are able to arrange private transfer for Naples or from Naples Airport/Train station with luxury cars and English speaking drivers offering a very professional service. If is requested a taxi for Sorrento, we call the normal taxi of the city.
The Wi-Fi service is very easy, works perfectly and is very much appreciated by our customers.
Our customers are from all the ages, we did not put any limits!
This review ignoble injury to the dignity and professionalism of those who day after day devote themselves with passion to their work. Among other it is also an insult to the opinions of all our other customers.
The hotel is rated always positively by our guests and in addition, to further demonstrate the falseness of the review is the fact of not having received any complaint in hotel at all.
Shame on you!

Arriving mid morning in the cool front hall of the Grand Royal, we were greeted warmly like members of the family. This hotel, and it sisters, have been in the the same family for three generations. The story and the subsequent heartfelt hospitality is charming and endearing. Nothing, but nothing is too much trouble for the friendly and professional team.
Traditional yet with all of the modern conveniences such as broad band, effective showers and plumbing, comfortable furnishings in the vast public rooms to snuggle into to read (dare I say) a book!
The gardens leading down to the terrace are a fragrant mix with the inevitable aromas of lemon combined with other warm Mediterranean hues.
The only down side - the menu at dinner. Somewhat predictable and geared towards an international clientele, I was disappointed at the lack of fresh home made Italian dishes. Good wine list and the star of the show is Salvatore the brilliant and humorous bar tender.
We will be back!

Room Tip: A room with a view of the bay is probably a must for first time visitors.

Dear Guests,
Thank you for taking the time to write us this great review.
I am so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us and appreciate your lovely comments regarding the hotel, our facilities and the excellent service.
We are proud of our hotel and the service we provide here, it is fantastic that you feel the same.
We especially enjoy hearing that you found the staff friendly and helpful.
Concerning Italian and local dishes we do have them, and like all our dishes, all fresh made.
It’s just impossible to make all customers agreed about everything. We are always available for any special requirements of the customers: they just need to ask.
My team and in particular way Salvatore the bartender, were delighted with your praise, they just love it when they succeed in their efforts to make the stay of our guests the best possible one. We would like to thank you for having been our most welcome guests and looking forward to the pleasure of welcoming you again in the future, we remain at your complete disposal for any further information or assistance you might need.

We stayed in this hotel in May with my husband. Location of this hotel is excellent - only 5 mins walk to the main town square. The room we had was beautiful with a breathtaking view (deluxe sea view balcony room). The furniture and design of the room was all luxury: tiled floor with a pretty design, wooden hand crafted furniture, a large comfortable bed, lovely pictures of birds on the walls. The bathroom was also covered in local design tiles, had good water pressure and no issues with hot water. The toiletries were very nice. The hair dryer however was one of those on-the-wall ones that is not very powerful (a minor inconvenience). The wifi in the hotel is good and is free. This hotel is all about the view. It stands on the top of a cliff overlooking a marina. There is a very large terrace with a bar, restaurant, swimming pool and gardens. You can sit at the edge of the terrace overlooking the sea and watching the boats go in and out of the marina. The sunsets are amazing. Also there is a lift that goes down to sea level where there are sun loungers, showers, a bar and access to the sea. We went at the start of May when the weather was warm but not warm enough to swim yet. The service of the hotel was mixed. On one hand the service in the restaurant was very good and the hotel prepared everything I asked for prior to check in (I had a request regarding the bed blankets). On the other hand we had an unexpected argument with the receptionists. We wanted to book a transfer from the hotel to the airport and the hotel gave us a price of EUR90. We asked if this is the same price we would get if we ordered directly from the company they use and the receptionist said yes. We booked with the hotel and later called the company out of interest. Guess what - they quoted us EUR80. We raised this with the receptionist and surprisingly they admitted that they need to take a margin for making the booking!!! We were very surprised because in other hotels this never happens - the hotel gets a special rate from a transfer company and does not overcharge its customers. Also I recommend not to eat at the hotel because the food is not amazing and is expensive for what it is. You are better off walking into town where there are lots of restaurants that are in their majority good value for money and decent quality. Having said this, I would still recommend this hotel because of it's amazing luxury feel and absolutely fantastic views!

Dear Guests,
Thank you very much for your kind review. We are very happy that you enjoyed your stay with us.
Here at the Royal we are committed to personal touches. We were especially happy to notice that
you praise not only the hotel, but our services too.
All our customers appreciate the food served in our various restaurants judging it outstanding;
Of course, someone may think in a different way but we would have preferred to know it
during your stay in the hotel and not now, in order to try to understand how to satisfy your tastes.
Regarding the cost of the transfer, we have clearly published the prices on our website; the
service is carried out by the most organized and professional company in Sorrento. All the
drivers speak English and all the cars are excellent. We only want the best for our customers. We do not know who you're facing to have a different price but, in any case, it is normal that other companies could offer transfers to a lower price but you have to check if they offer the same level of service.
We would like to thank you for having been our guests and, please, feel free to e-mail or contact us for any further information or assistance you may require for your next visit.
With our kindest regards
