“Our third stay at this wonderful hotel!”
Reviewed 1 September 2010

This was our third stay at the Grand Hotel Royal. We kind of float between this hotel and a couple of the other hotels owned by this same company. All of the properties are very nice and have a unique draw. The Grand Hotel has a great pool and a sea level platform which allows guests take a dip in the ocean. We had two rooms for this trip and both were very nice and clean. Our view(s) were fantastic and the breakfast was typical for Italy. I would say that the coffee is always an issue at this hotel . . . it's not good and being in Italy . . . it should be good. The staff are always friendly and we were very pleased with the private care service which they coordinated for us to take a tour along the Amalfi Coast and into Ravello. Beautiful!

Booked this hotel as it had been highly recommended by family and friends and the reviews on trip advisor were overall good. Im not one to usually write a negative review having read the things that people complain about on here, however there were a few issues with this hotel that I thought I would share.
Check in had the wow factor, the reception area of the hotel is very grand. Staff were friendly and helpful and we went straight to our room which was located on the 1st floor. The room was quite small although this was not an issue as were were not planning on spending too much time in our room. The bathroom was also small and somewhat dated although perfectly adequate for a long weekend for just 2 adults and clean. The bathtub had obviously leaked some time ago and the plaster on the opposite side of the wall next to the bed had come off and there was a smell of damp in the room. This had obviously happened some time ago. Our friends stayed in the room next to us which smelt very musty and damp all weekend despite having the doors open to let some fresh air in.
The location of the hotel is great and the pool and terrace area are gorgeous, as is the private bathing platform on the beach. Its just a shame our rooms let the hotel down. what was worse about our room was it being next to the cleaners store so a wake up call was present every morning at 06:00 until we gave up and got up at 07:30 as the door creaked and banged every minute.
The staff on reception during our stay were less than helpful and everything seemed an effort for them to help us (mainly the male staff though). I asked for an iron to iron a shirt for a wedding and the hotel dont have an iron ( a first for a 4 star hotel for me) but an ironing service at 5 Euros for a shirt. Even this seemed an effort to get this done, however it was and it was returned to my room within 30 minutes.
This hotel could be stunning, the rooms just need that bit of TLC and the staff on reception could smile and be a bit more friendly, the other staff in the restaurant and beach bar were great.

The public areas, and exteriors of the hotel are lovely and the views some of the best in the world. We stayed with our 8 year old in a shared twin room. Whilst we acknowledge it was peak season, our room overlooked an incredibly noisy road with a not particularly pleasant view. In fairness there is double glazing which keeps out a lot of noise, however with the addition of another single bed the room was very small for 3 people. Bathroom though was top notch and incredibly clean.

The area of Sorrento is very expensive and one should be aware that in the hotel bar menus are not displayed and that was one thing that caught us out. I would agree with the reviewer who thought that being able to see your tab through the tv is a good idea. We were certainly surprised by our bar bill. The staff were pleasant enough and the view stunning, but still can't quite equate that with the price of drinks.

Having a young child with us, it is more convenient to travel on a half board basis. Some (some!) of the restaurant staff were very pleasant but dinner was more like an Olympic sprint than a laid back evening atmosphere. Some evenings menus were better than others.

We had an amazing stay at the Grand Royal hotel for 2 weeks with our parents in June. I cant say enough good things about the hotel. The staff were wonderful and couldnt do enough for you, service was first class and they deserved more than the 4 stars. We had the half board option and the food options were never repetative. You felt like you were dining in a top restaurant every night. I wouldnt hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. We went to Sorrento to get married and although we didnt have the wedding at the hotel, the reception and hotel staff still did everything possible to ensure the day was perefct for us. We want to go back to Sorrento for an annivesary one year and we already know there is no other hotel we could possibly stay at after being spoilt rotten by the Grand Hotel Royal.

This hotel delivered the luxury break we were hoping for. The hotel has perhaps the best location in Sorrento; situated on the clifftop looking out onto spectacular views of Naples Bay and Vesuvious yet only a stone's throw from the centre of Sorrento and bus/rail links. The coach stop for trips (we did Capri, Heculaneum & Pompei) is opposite the hotel.
Our room was large, well furnished, with excellent bathroom facilities and was kept very clean.
The quality of service was excellent. Reception staff couldn't be more helpful; nothing was too much trouble for bar & restaurant staff who balanced professional service with good humour and took exceptional pride in their work. Every member of staff acknowledged us with a greeting and a smile no matter what job they were doing.
The Mediterranean garden provided a beautiful setting for the hotel and welcome shade when needed. The views from the terrace were breathtaking. The pool was clean and large, making it great for swimming as well as a cooling dip.
Quality of food was excellent - an extensive range available at breakfast including freshly cooked eggs/omlettes to order; wide choice of good food on the terrace at lunchtime and good food in the evenings too.
Meals and drinks were not cheap - but that is what we expected and didn't mind paying the higher price as they delivered on quality. Would definitely stay again.

We have just had a holiday/wedding at the Grand Hotel Royal and we had a fantastic time.
The manager Giovanni and his staff could not do enough for us. Our wedding day was brilliant and we cant thank them enough for all the hard work that went into making it the perfect day. The hotel itself is beautiful and the view is amazing.I would definitely recommend this hotel not only for a holiday but for anyone who is looking for a wedding venue.

A very nice hotel which is in a convenient location near the main square giving easy access to the trains, buses and boats. The views from the terrace are fantastic of the bay of Naples including Vesuvias and Capri. We had a side sea view which was nice but of course not as nice as the full sea view if you are willing to pay the high price of an upgrade. The balconies at the rear overlook the road and a small park and we were pleased that we were not located at the rear. The grounds and swimming pool are very well maintained and kept to a high standard. It was nice to have the option of sun bathing on the sun terrace at sea level and diving into the sea. The service was a high standard and always friendly. The drinks were expensive as expected but so was Sorrento as a whole.
Our booking was on a B & B basis as we did not want to be restricted to meals in the hotel everynight. We did try the hotel food on two occasions but on both occasions left slightly disappointed. When you are paying for the food as an addition you tend to be more critical because you are comparing it with what you can buy in restuarants in Sorrento. We had some lovely meals in different locations at the Grande port, the town and overlooking the bay.Overall we would recommend this hotel for the fantasic views and location. We had a wonderful time.
