I was planning a trip with my wife to Sorrento and wanted to find a good location and also meet our expectations in regard to amentities that we are accustomed to from fine hotels. We always stay in luxury/high end properties. I also realize frm experience, in Europe these needs are often difficult to achieve outside the largest cities.
That said, I didn't want to get a stinker with all the options in Sorrento. We chose the Tramontano and requested a room with a sea view. After a long trip we arrived in the evening and were delighted with the comfort of the room. When we awoke, things got even better. I stepped out onto the terrace and had the most incredible view of the Bay and Vesuvius that one could imagine. Plus the location is in the heart of Old Sorrento. The staff was wondeful across the board. The property was in excellent shape. The breakfast was at least on par with other Italian hotels. The breakfast staff is quiet and efficient and I'm guessing that they are quiet because they are intimidated by speaking English. They are still very friendly and accomodating. The made service was excellent. They stopped by every evening to ask if we needed extra towels, a rarity in European hotels in general and a very nice touch.
I honestly could not recommend a better hotel in Sorrento. It isn't cheap, but compared to Capri/Positano/Rome, it is an absolute steal.
I'd love to come back sooner than my schedule will allow!

Room Tip: If you don't get a Sea View you are missing the best part of the hotel!

Overview: Lobby very nice, hotel staff very nice. Seemed to be family run though big hotel, not extremely professional (staff needs some finishing). Rooms very but need upgrading and attention to detail. Breakfast is very nice. I do recommend this hotel.

The first room they checked us into was on an old side. Room was dull and uncomfortable. Old furniture, particle board furniture, used bought ugly and smelly. We asked for another room and we were placed in a room overlooking the pool, not much better but better, basically same room different view, at least not smelly. Though we were still unsatisfied, we asked if we could be upgraded to the ocean side as my sister in law paid and extra 60 euro for the upgrade and was placed in a room fit for a prince (huge bath and bedroom). Front desk said we could upgrade but we had to pay an additional 60 euro "In Cash". We thought this was weird, and possibly up to no good, but we didn’t care.

We were placed in an ocean side room that was exactly the same as all the other two we were placed in just better view. We found out later that my sister in Law was actually placed in a suite, lucky wench...LOL. She deserved it as she had bad luck the other parts of our trip.

Anyway, there is a swimming area below for the ocean that you have to catch a special elevator that only operates at certain times due to an employee having to operate it. To return you have to ring a bell to be picked up.

The swimming area: If you want a chair, its 12 euro, if you want an umbrella, its 5 euro. The water is filthy, not enough current to freshen the water. Was ok for the experience, but I don’t recommend it during busy times. You are better off catching the ferry to Capri, or walking a little further north from the hotel to some private beaches or staying in the pool.

Breakfast: The food was good and fresh, typical of what everyone else was offering. At breakfast there was a huge fight in the kitchen between a man and a woman, and all the waiters went running in and yelling to be quiet. The owner came in with her dog and was yelling and shushing. This is what I meant by not professional. We did not eat dinner there but I highly recommend going down to Marina Grande to eat. I strongly recommend "not eating at Ristorante Donna Sofia". The place was terrible and this hotel should not have said it was good.

This hotel was ok. We probably would stay again due to location and was very clean. Last time we stayed at the Hilton and it was just too much walking after a long day out and back again to eat. The Hilton was concrete and full of noisy English. The Tramontano has a lot of upgrading to do but location is good, clean and quiet. I may investigate other locations next time.

The pool is very good.

Room Tip: Ocean is always nice, pay the additional and treat yourself. If you can aford the suite, get it, my...

Let's start with the good points, the hotel is in a fantastic location 2 minutes from the old town, with lovely grounds which set it back from the road, a nice pool, and the sea facing rooms have a brilliant view.  Our senior suite was large and comfortable.  But all these things we had paid a lot of money for, and were the minimum you would expect for the price paid. What badly lets down this hotel is patchy, and often poor service from the staff.  This is not universal, the bar and pool staff were fine for example, the reception staff were ok when you spoke to them but hardly going out of their way to meet and greet.  The worst staff are the extremely unfriendly porter (when he is there, he is often the first person you will see as you enter the hotel because there is no permanent presence on the door), and the kindest thing you can say about the breakfast staff is that they are brisk.  Otherwise, breakfast is a mixed bag, the fruit juice is undrinkable, the "pastries" seemed in fact to be different shaped rather tasteless brioches, but the range and quality of the fruit is excellent and overall, as you can help yourself , it is generous.   The room housekeeping is rather mixed:  toiletries weren't replaced and the room wasn't vacuumed the whole 7 days we were there.  There was damp above ths shower which needs attention and really the bathroom sanitaryware needs updating.  The outside walls need a generous lick of paint, something I imagine is very costly on the cliff facing side. There was a lot going for this hotel and it has bags of potential, but I get the impression they don't wish to spend much money on additional staff or facilities that are largely aimed at tour groups who stay just a few days, but where is the excuse for such surly staff?

Room Tip: A sea facing room is worth the extra money

A group of eight of us stayed here for five nights in mid October. The hotel is brilliantly situated very near the centre of town and easily walkable to the ports or railway station.
Our reception was friendly and efficient as was the service throughout our stay.
We had booked rooms with sea views which were what it's all about and they were well worth the extra charge. We had two rooms on the 4th floor and two on the 3rd (we did book 6 months before so had rather hoped to be at least on the same floor) and the rooms were varied in shape and size but generally well furnished and comfortable but rather tired - the problem with staying towards the end of the season.
We did not eat in the hotel (Sorrento has some excellent restaurants such as Da Emilia or Il Borgo) and breakfast was frankly rather disappointing with weak orange juice and strange tasting coffee; however the view from your table or from the cocktail bar balcony made up for everything!

Room Tip: The sea view is worth it - in fact you'd be crazy not to have it - why else are you in Sorrento?

Just returned from a 4 night stay at the Imperial Tramontano with husband and 14 yr old son. From the moment we arrived we were totally relaxed. Our room overlooking the Bay of Naples and Mt Vesuvius was magnificent. Even with the sofa bed already made as a bed we had plenty of space. The bathroom was big and spotlessly clean. Breakfasts were amazing and the staff were thoughtful and remembered what drinks we liked in the bar in the evenings. We were within walking distance of all the shops and the railway station and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

From its grounds to its interior, the Tramontano is an exquisite hotel. The staff was very accommodating, our breakfasts delicious and the suites were wonderfully appointed and extremely comfortable. I especially enjoyed our view of the Bay of Naples.

One word describes the lobby...gorgeous. The hotel offers various sitting areas for its guests which made it very comfortable for our party of eight.

We would definitely come back to the Tramontano on a return trip to Sorrento.

Room Tip: Going to sleep and waking up overlooking the Bay of Naples was a dream come true
