i have stayed at Tramontano twice and understand the mixed reviews it can get. It is a fantastic location with views over the Bay of Naples and is close to all the shops , alleyways and restaurants. The rooms are fine especially if you have a sea viewbut if you have a room overlooking the pool, then it can be noisy . The pool is supposed to be closed in the evening but some visitors ignore this and can be a nuisance. The hotel is old and tends to rely on its history so sometimes the attitude and service can not be what you would expect. some staff have been there too long probably. For a great holiday visiting all the fabulous sites around the amalfi coast, this is a great place to stay although expensive. If you are expecting 5 star luxury with service from passed generations ,then yes you will be disappointed

This hotel isn't value for money - way too expensive for an impersonal, jaded, and on occasions uncomfortable experience. We booked last minute on our way back up from Southern Italy. We were shocked by the standard of the first room they gave us and immediately asked to be moved. It was like a cell, tired scuffed furniture and a tiny window. Lurid decor in the very far end of the hotel, down endless corridors - this was meant to be a superior room!. I have to admit that they immediately sent someone to show us another room which was better - larger with views over the garden and Bay of Naples. But the furnishings were still really dated, the bathroom was antique (think 1970s) with the metal finish wearing off the taps. An old stained bath, mirrors starting to lose their mirror around the edges, cracked tiles.... You get the picture. This hotel, as other reviewers have already said, requires a huge investment to bring it up to the standard required for the prices they charge. It is really showing its age. We found the breakfast quite good - huge selection but yes, the orange juice tastes like cordial, it's not fresh which is poor for any hotel. The pool is good but only no pen from 9am to 7pm. The restaurant beside the pool was handy and portions large. The minibar prices were a laugh - 5.50 euros for water and 6 euros for a beer - ridiculous. Service was a mixed bag - some good, some really quite bad. We wouldn't return and if we could have left after our first night without a cancellation charge we would have. Try somewhere else when in Sorrento.

Room Tip: Get a room in another hotel.

This hotel is in a fantastic location with stunning views over the bay of Naples. As you approach Sorrento by boat, this hotel stands out clearly on the edge of the cliff and it looks fantastic. The hotel is very nice inside and the rooms do the job (they could do with a little bit of updating however). We were in a room overlooking the bay so we had great views, the window was fairly small though in the bedroom but we were on the top floor and I think the room windows are generally bigger. We spent very little time in the hotel as there are some great restaurants and bars in Sorrento (Inn Bufalito was a personal favourite). The location is perfect for all of the restaruarants as you arrive in the centre within about 2 minutes of leaving the hotel. The pool area and the garden are lovely and not too overcrowded as most people (like ourselves) seem to spend most of the day sightseeing. If you are planning in some sunbathing time though, you shouldn't struggle to get sunbeds in the morning although there is no rule against reserving sunbeds and this was quite common. I would advise staying by the pool as the marina isn't great and very overcrowded (you also have to pay 14 Euros for a sunbed down there). The staff were very friendly and happy to help with anything, we were particularly impressed with member of staff charged with parking the cars in the 'makeshift car park' in the driveway. If you are thinking of renting a car whilst in Sorrento, think twice about it. We drove down from Rome which was a straightforward drive but driving around Sorrento is an interesting experience to say the least. There are a copious amount of moped drivers who seem to risk their lives on every corner so you have your wits about you. The car was helpful to get to Pompeii but if you are planning on taking a trip to Positano or Amalfi- take the bus or the boat as parking is basically impossible. Pompeii is also easy to access by public transport.

Having just read other people's reviews I fell I must write one.
We stopped heere form the 5th August to the 12th August.

The Euro does make things expensive. (Don't go to Europe if you can't afford it with the current exchange rate)
The hotel is an old family run hotel. The room we had was clean and serviced every day.
The more time I spend in a hotel room means I'm not out and about enjoying my holiday.
All we want is a clean room to get ready in and sleep in.
The views from the breakfast are are to die for. over looking the Bay of Naples.
The bar has an outside veranda that also over looks the same and is a great place to wacthc the sun set from.
Again drinks are expensive in the hotel. but if you can't afford 4 star then go elsewhere.
Drinks come with complimentary nibbles, which were nice.
Hotel has pool which is open 09:00 - 19:00 and provides free towels.
All staff were friendly and really helpful. Although speak Italian to them will always get you better service. Even if you just try the odd sentence.
The breakfast manager and staff always amke you feel welcome. More so if you make an effort to communicate with them.
Hotel has a lift down to the beach, but it is closed 14:00 till 16:00 (I think)
Hotel is in a great location, easy to walk down to Marina Grande and also into central Sorrento.
There are literally hundreds of places to eat in Sorrento and offer some great food. And there are plenty that have prices to suit your budget.
None of them are more than 15 minutes walk from the hotel.
You would have to be blind to not to be able to find a wide variety of different foods to eat.
And if you really don't like going aborad there is an Enlish pub and an Irish Pub on Corsa Italia. Although I didn't go in either of them.
back to the hotel, its air conditioned.
Some rooms are better than other and some have a sea view.(But you pay for what you get)

On our last day we wern;t leaving till 17:00 and asked if they had a room to change in.
They said all the rooms were fuly booked(Understandable), but they said if we asked on the last day and a room had not been occupied becuase the guest were coming late, they would let us use that room). Which I think was fair.

This was our second vist to Sorrento and we stopepd here both times. We would do that if we didn't like the hotel.

We brought some friends back one night for a drink and to watch the sunset. They absolulty loved the hotel as well.

One night we didn;t get back in till 2:00am and had no problem getting in the hote, or getting the key for our room.

We booked through Citalia and we had a letter on arrival, welcoming us back. Some of the staff remembered us as well.
We didn't contact the rep as we had no need. But it was nice not to have the holiday rep meeting and hard sell trips which I think just wastes half a day of your holiday.

We went to Capri(Just walk down and book the ferry, its really easy.)
When you get to Capri the funicular up to Capri town is also easy to book, its just to the right where you get off the boat. (There willl be a queue of people also buying tickets)

You can get a bus or taxi around to Anncarpi and then get the cable car to the top.
You can do this all at your own pace wohtout some rep ruching you about.

We founf a local place full of Italins to eat lunch at and it was mucgh cheaper than the places the reps take you too(They alwys say theyve done a deal for lunch)

I could write for hours, just get yourselfs across to Sorrento and enjoy.

Also if you go to Pompei, get the train from the station. Its really cheap and takes about 30 mins and 10 stops(The stop is called Pompei) THen you can just pay and look around the ruins.

Same if you go to Almafi coast. get the bus there and once there just come back on a boat(11 Euros)

Enjoy

From our room balcony, we had a fantastic view over the Bay of Naples. The room itself was serviceable (nothing fancy). The hotel is also well placed for beach, restaurants, train and bus stations. The staff were very friendly from the receptionists and barman to the incredibly charming Luigi (restaurant manager), who had the knack of making everybody feel special. The breakfasts were fine and we had dinner a couple of times in the restaurant. It wasn't cheap, but the food and service were great (and a view to die for). The interior of the hotel is not as modern as many, but it has an old world charm which we liked. The good sized pool was a welcome relief from the heat after a day trip out, but it closes at 7pm so if you're late back, you've missed it. (We booked the hotel through Citalia whose in-resort staff were also helpful.)

Just stayed at the hotel - booked through Citalia. Great location with superb views over the bay of Naples from the terrace of the hotel. Also a very good pool area at the back of the hotel. The hotel is old but had a lot of charm. The staff overall were very organised and provided good service.
One negative comment - the buffet breakfast was very poor - little choice and almost all of the fruit was from a tin - fresh orange was only available at an additional cost. This is ludicrous for a four star hotel.

Room Tip: Choose a room overlooking the bay of Naples - superb views from the hotel.

We really enjoyed our 10 day trip that included 4 nights at this hotel (2 in Capri, the rest in Rome) July 30-August 3, 2013. It was absolutely a charming town, a great beach club (Leonardi's below), and within walking distance to much of everything. We had booked a triple but they upgraded us to a suite which was nice. The rooms and hotel itself could stand a little bit of updating. The bathroom had a cockroach in it the first day we arrived and the shower wasn't draining (although they fixed it when we told them). I would have expected more for being a "4" star and price we paid. At check in, the door man was very nice and there was a lady at the desk who was very kind as well. Much of the rest of the staff though made us feel like we were bothering them when we had questions. That seemed to be the theme throughout our trip that we Americans were a nuisance to them.

The other thing that was disappointing and we felt taken advantage of was that we had them arrange a car and driver from Rome to Sorrento. We were supposed to have a baby seat (but didn't) and they charged us 450 Euro. That seemed outrageous. We were going to have them book a car/driver for the Amalfi Coast and told us it was 40 euro per hour. However, when I called the company the hotel recommended, they gave us a car and driver with babyseat from 830 - 1730 for 180 euro for the entire day. When I confronted the hotel with this, they told me that it is not possible. So overall, we loved Sorrento, the location, and views; but the hotel was just okay.
