“Great location but in desperate need of some love”
Reviewed 11 July 2014

We've been to Sorrento many times and on this occassion we decided to stay on The Imperial Tramantano. The hotel is in a great spot and we paid for a deluxe seaview room. There is not doubting the room had one of the best views from a hotel room in the whole area, it was breathtaking! However, I doubt that our room had been decorated from many, many years. It was in a desperate need to a major refurb. Scratched paintwork, faded lampshades, chipped tiles and bed so old it creaked when you got in. Whilst most guests seemed to be of the view that this was the 'Italian' way it certainly isn't our experience with hotel such as De La Ville or the Ambasscotri.

The public areas of this hotel are great but we really felt it was let down by a couple of really penny pinching management policies. When you are paying a lot of money for a hotel with all the grandeur and history of this establishment you do expect something a bit special.

Our first issue was the hotel's strict policy of only one towel per person, per day by the pool. Whilst we did try and convince the pool attendant to let us have another dry towel the answer was no. When we discussed this issue at reception we were told it was the 'owners' policy not to give more than one towel per day to guests. That is ofcourse if you are a first time guest. There was a hard core group of guests who come to the hotel every year and it seemed like they could have whatever they wanted. To the point that the pool attendant was reserving their beds for them before the pool area opened with two towels! I know this sounds pathetic but how do you encourage customers to want to come back when you treat the first timers and the old timers so differently.

Breakfast was very average but lunch on the terrace was lovely. Drinks on the veranda were amazing - such a great view.

This hotel needs to spend some money on their rooms and start treating all it clients with the same service level. It has so much going for its location and public areas but it can not neglect it's rooms.

Room Tip: Room 411 has an amazing view.

My husband and I stayed here on our honeymoon. The location was great as we could walk to tons of restaurants and to the port where we were able to take day trips along the Amalfi Coast. The views from the terrace were amazing and we went there to have a drink and watch the sunset many nights. The front desk staff was very helpful and the food at the breakfast was very good.

Room Tip: We had a garden view and I wish we had upgraded to a water view.

Great location with beautiful sea views, and easy access to the central district. What really made our stay special(for seven people) was the excellent and courteous service we received from the staff. Special thanks to Rosanna and signore Romano for making it a truly memorable visit.

Absolutely amazing! Sometimes words can't describe it but here goes.....In a nutshell, room, hotel, pool, views and especially the staff....... incredible. So friendly and nothing was too much. Perfect location with unbelievable panoramic views. So near to the centre, but then again the centre is not everything. Sorrento has so much to offer. One of our best holidays! Do it!

Room Tip: Sea view rooms look out on to Vesuvius.

What a quirky and lovely hotel. It felt like the sort of hotel where people used to come to convalesce in the warmer climate!
We were awed by the views from the bar and the breakfast room. The gardens looked like the perfect place to take a book and relax in the shade, but sadly we didnt have time to do this.
Its funny that there are rave reviews about the brekafast. We found it rather average, and heavy on the cakes and pastries.
The decor is really quite dated (lots of peach) but this contributes to the charm.
When we were there it was a more mature crowd. We're in our 30s and did feel like the youngest staying there by far. It might be different at other times of the year, but if you're looking for somewhere a bit more boisterous this might not be for you.
The beach situation is rather confusing. You can take a towel from the hotel at no expense (but this wasnt mentioned to us so i caught the lift down to the beach only to have to come back up to get a towel from the pool area). You need to pay for a beach chair and umbrella, but this wasnt explained until we got down there and we hadnt taken any money. It wasnt a great beach anyway so we didnt stay.
Couldn't ask for a better location. so close to everything yet so calm.
Oh and if you catch the train to Sorrento, you can walk to the hotel (10 to 15 mins). We made the mistake (due to not being able to get a map from the Tourist Info) of catching a taxi which cost us 25 euro for such a short distance! Should have done our homework before we got there.

My family (30 of them) and I stayed at the Hotel Tramontano in June, and we could not have asked for more. The hotel had an amazing location (about a 5 minute walk to the city center) and the views were breathtaking. The staff were amazing... they were so helpful, understanding (of our very confusing family) and always had a smile on their face. The breakfast is WONDERFUL, and the breakfast room will have you in awe. I have traveled around Italy quite a bit, and I can honestly say this is the BEST hotel I have stayed in... I would not have changed a thing. Thank you to all of the front desk staff for everything!!!!

we would highly recommend this hotel!!!!!!!

Room Tip: the ocean view rooms on the 4th floor all have HUGE balconies

Hotel Tomentano is beautiful with wonderfully helpful staff. Can't praise them enough. BUT.....
we went with Sovereign Holidays.
Myself and wife, who is disabled and needs a wheelchair, were due to be picked up by car. On arrival, we were left at Naples Airport for two and a half hours. I made numerous telephone calls to the Sovereign Holidays "consierge", and was told in a very offhand way it was a bank holiday in Sorrento that day, with the driver stuck in traffic. Strangely we were the only people stranded with 6 other flights coming through and clearing. Surely Sovereign would know what it would be like and take that into account, and made provision to get there.. Anyway.... totally disgusted with their attitude, needless to say will never travel through them again.
