“Great base for visiting the vicinity”
Reviewed 13 June 2011

The Hotel Bristol has fabulous views over Sorrento, is just a short walk into town, although quite a long walk to the railway station! It has a super pool on the roof with lovely gardens. The views are spectacular from here.
We had half board at the hotel and the meals did get a bit 'samey' but the standard was good. On the last night we ate at the 'a la carte' restaurant in the hotel for a supplement and this was a magnificent meal - wish we had done this sooner! If you didn't want evening meal, you could have lunch in the terrace bar so there were options to eat out in the evening.

Room Tip: Go to highest floors for views/less road noise

Four of us have just returned from an memorable trip to Sorrento--We had a ball!!
The Hotel Bristol has been well documented by tripadvisor contributors over the years--virtually all good. When asking the question why, in my experience it often comes down to people, they are the ones who can make or break a visit. The staff at the Bristol are some of the best I have ever come across in my travels over many years. Just a few mentions now.
All of the Reception staff, whose knowlage of the area, and unfailing good humour even when asked odd questions was a marvel.
Matteo, the Maitre d' runs the Breakfast and Dinner services like clockwork, the highest quality of service.
And finally to Luigi, the ever helpful night reception/porter.

The rooms are large, it was well worth paying for the balcony room with the views to Naples. The housekeeping was good, the attention to detail was consistant.

Breakfast was plentiful and varied, eggs cooked how you wanted them etc.

We ate at the Hotel twice and both evenings were memorable, the Food superb and the Service smooth.

If I had one issue it was small. The Hotel was built at least 50 years ago and some external degredation has occured--but that had NO effect on the quality of our visit.

Would I go back--YES YES YES.

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony room overlooking Bay of Naples

Great attitude from check in to check out. Don't be put put off by the welcome, very laid back but that's reflects the nature of the place. The location is great, the views magnificent and the staff attentive. Our stay was 5 days and our hire car was moved around as if we were in a taxi, just drop the keys at receptionand phone when you want it back. We had a function at the hotel during our stay and again there was little fuss, the staff know that the guests are the priority. It's great to reflect on a vacation where the memories are of the views, service and location.

From the moment we arrived at this hotel we were made to feel like we had made a good choice.
After a terrifying drive from Rome to Sorrento we pulled up outside the hotel where we quickly checked in and our car was taken and parked for us. Check in was quick and easy and then we were escourted to our room which was beautiful. We had selected a suite with Jacuzzi and were not disappointed. The room was very spacious, nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. The balcony with jacuzzi was again very spacious, infact it was bigger than our friends room (in a different hotel I hasten to add) and the view was lovely overlooking the bay, town and a little harbour.
Service is what makes this hotel stand out, after our initial check in we were never asked our room number again when leaving and collecting the room key from reception each day, they just remembered us. Restaurant and housekeeping staff were all very polite and always looked genuienly happy to see you. They also always wished you a pleasant day.
Food in the restaurant was nice with a reasonable selection each day. Although if I am honest the portions were a bit on the small side. Breakfast was nice with a good continental selection as well as eggs cooked to order.
Only negative I really have is to say the hotel is a bit of a maze to start with and can take a bit of time to get your bearings.

Room Tip: Suite with jacuzzi is good value for money

The location of this hotel is perfect, the views across the Bay of Naples are breathtaking and the public areas of the hotel are stunning. The staff particularly Matteo and his colleagues in the restaurant were attentive and efficient and always friendly and pleased to see you. The food (we stayed half board) was generally good, always tasty and hot and the kids were always given an extra portion of chips or icecream. The roof top lounge area is amazing, providing comfort and shade for you to relax and while away the hours with a good book, if you can drag your attention away from the amazing view. The pool area is lovely, not too overcrowded and the staff have an efficient system to ensure people don't reserve and hog sun loungers for the whole day, and this meant we never had a problem finding beds no matter what time of day. The rooftop restaurant provides good value pasta, pizza and salad lunches aswell as an essential cold beer!

If you have a hire car parked in the hotel's (Free-Thankyou!) car park you will require nerves of steel when you drive down to the main road- having said that the kids loved the impromptu theme park ride which is the corkscrew bends and moped dodging drive down!

Downside...our rooms! we had rooms located in the 'annex' (as you look at images of the hotel this is a completely seperate 4 storey building on the left of the main hotel), which, while it still provided great views, the lower floors (ours was on the first) were so close to the road and heavy traffic it was not a pleasure to sit out, the noise is constant and you cant have the window open because of it! the walls are paper thin in this area of the hotel, we could hear everything being said in the room next door (not a problem for us as it was our 2 children in the adjacent room) but the noise from next doors bathroom would be disturbing if your neighbour wasn't someone you knew well! The room on the otherside of us would have, I am sure, had the same problem, and I can only apologise if they were subjected to the same racket everytime the shower was used or the toilet flushed, equally we heard every word from their TV and felt obliged to watch the same channel in order not to make a conflicting din!
The rooms whilst spottlessly clean are slightly dated in this part of the hotel, the hairdryer blew up, the shower head fell off mid-shower (both of which were fixed instantly by the staff, it has to be said), and the furniture looks slightly 1990's MFI if the truth be told. We could have complained and I am sure we would have been moved, but the hotel had gone to great lengths to accommadate our wishes with 2 balcony rooms adjacent to each other, which at the time of booking, were not available, and we felt 2 more adjacent rooms would be difficult to find. I am sure other rooms in the main building of the hotel are far more superior, and when I return to this hotel (which I have no doubt I will), I will request one of these on a higher floor, which is what I would advise you to do to ensure a top class experience in a first class hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for upper floor rooms in the main building

The staff at the hotel were extremely pleasant and helpful and any requests were done if a very calm easy manner.

The rooms were clean and ours (510) over looked the bay which was beautiful. The rooms are adequate as a base with a 6 foot bed plenty of storage space. The bathroom again was fiine, the shower was not the most modern but it certainly did the job and we had hot water whenever required. The balcony had a table, 2 chairs and 2 loungers and this looked out over the bay of Sorrento and the town. There are no tea and coffee facilities in the room and I would advise you to take your own hair dryer. There is some noise from out side but it didn't really bother us and an automatic blind you can put down for security when you go out or for night to help stop the noise and darken the room.

The food was of a good standard with a variety of choices each night which were waiter served. Any drinks not totally consumed on a night could be saved for the next night with your room number on the bottle. So if you see a bottle of wine not totally drunk dont think its not wanted!! We were half board (breakfast and evening meal) but if you let the head waiter know you can swap your evening meal for lunch which we did and again we had good choice variety and then went out for the afternoon and evening which made a change.

The swimming pool is on the 7th floor and is very clean and well maintained. It is just a swimming pool strictly no jumping or diving in. Pool towels are supplied and there is a cafe area next to the pool which does drinks and snacks.

Most of the amenities are at the top of the hotel so beautiful views are always available.

We stayed for 4 nights and visited Pompeii, Versuvius and Capri.

I would generally say the hotel was a couples hotel. There were some very young children there (0-2 years) but on the whole it was mainly adults.

I would recommend this hotel and speaking to people who were there they go back year after year.
