“What a wonderful and friendly place”
Reviewed 16 August 2011

What a wonderful and friendly hotel! The views were breathtaking and the service impeccable.
We’ve just stayed there for 11 nights and I can’t fault this hotel. Everybody there is so friendly, warm and smiley, that it makes the whole experience even better.
The Maitre d’, Matteo, always welcomed us with warmth at breakfast. His team of waiters were very efficient and polite. Perfect and quick service.
The reception team was always very helpful. Special thanks to Tony, Ercole, Salvatore and Antonio. And don’t forget Sr. Nello, working hard during the night.
The swimming pool is big and has amazing views. This is where we spent most of the time. Always very clean and spotless, thanks to Luigi’s hard work, keeping all running perfectly.
Our family room was always very clean, with immaculate bed linen and towels.
We were in B&B, so I can’t comment on dinner, but we did have lunch there nearly every day. We really enjoyed the food, and so did our children. Good sized portions and fair value. Dear Pascale and his team were also very efficient and always keen to help.
As I said, I can’t fault it!
On top of all this, the view was spectacular! From everywhere in the hotel, even when you are just waiting for the lift, all you see is the whole Bay of Sorrento, Bay of Naples and Vesuvius!
I hope we can come back there and I hope they will always have a nice room for our family. ;)

My husband and I stayed in this beautiful hotel for two weeks at the end of July, beginning of August. This makes a total of twelve times in the last fifteen years and the hotel just seems to get better and better each time.
From the moment you step into reception there is the wonderful warm welcome and this sets the tone as to how you will be treated during your stay.
The reason we keep returning is twofold, the stunning location of the hotel, overlooking the town of Sorrento and across the bay to the imposing Vesuvius and most importantly the wonderful staff.
Matteo and his staff make eating in the dinning room , with its amazing views from the seventh floor , such a very special experience, there is a new chef since our last time and the food is excellent.
There are relaxing sun terraces away from the pool where you can sunbathe or up on a higher level by the beautiful pool area. Here there is also a lovely place to have drinks or a sandwich should you not wish to have lunch on the sun terrace restaurant. We hardly left the hotel as its such a marvellous place to relax and each evening we would spend on the bar terrace, again with the same stunning views, very well looked after by the three super barmen.
We cannot praise this hotel enough and already we are planning our return next year as staying here and being with all these lovely people is the best holiday we have.

It's difficult to provide an overall rating for this hotel, because our experience of it was both fantastic and pretty awful. On balance I've given it a 4 star rating because it certainly isn't an average hotel, and the restaurant is excellent.
To start with the good parts, principally the restaurant, which has outstanding views over the sea to Vesuvius and across the bay of Sorrento. We had window seats for all but one meal (when we arrived very late) and were particularly impressed by the Maitre d', Matteo, who welcomes guests personally at every meal and generally runs an excellent service, ensuring that all the restaurant staff work together to create a wonderful atmosphere. If there is a professional award for the best Maitre d' then Matteo would be a strong candidate. The food was also good, with a wide choice and emphasising fresh local produce. We particularly liked the fact that at dinner there was always a self-service salad table, with a variety of interesting salads, mostly using Mediterranean vegetables - peppers, aubergines, tomatoes etc - often chargrilled or marinaded in olive oil. Unusually for Italy, breakfast was good too.
As others have said, the pool area has fantastic views, although the limited opening hours (8 am - 6 pm) meant we only swam 3 times as we spent our days sightseeing. Also, the spa facilities (jacuzzi etc) needed to be booked in advance, so we didn't bother with them although they looked perfectly pleasant.
The big negative for us was the bedrooms. We booked on-line with Thomsons (from whom we heard nothing at all during our 6-day stay, so for us there was no benefit at all in booking through a tour operator) and assumed we were getting a sea view room of the sort which features in the brochures. On arrival we were allocated a "lateral" room in the annex, from which it was impossible to see the sea and which looked out along the busy and noisy road outside, as well as onto a graffiti-ed wall. So tip No 1 is don't even try to sleep in room 388, which wasn't even very clean. I love Italy, but we seriously thought of cutting our losses and going home, despite the concierge saying he would speak to the manager the next day with a view to our moving after breakfast. By the following evening a new room had been sorted out for us, in the main building on the first floor overlooking the sea (room 106). This was much much better, with a sea view - no balcony but being on the first floor by the road it would have been too noisy to sit out anyway. Assuming you are reading this because you haven't visited Sorrento mentioning the noise might sound hyper fussy, but it really is very intrusive. The hotel is directly on a busy road (ie with no front garden, just a very narrow pavement) and although the traffic jams are only at peak times, scooters in particular speed past at all hours of the day and night. The sound insulation between first floor rooms isn't good either, and the air conditioning is centrally controlled (ie you can't turn it off at night if the noise is irritating, and conversely it turns itself on in the night also so the whirring is intermittent) so there are various sorts of noise to ensure a bad night's sleep.
We had a really memorable holiday, using local transport to visit the Roman sites of Herculeaneum, Pompeii and Oplontis and the huge amphitheatre at Pozzuoli, several fantastic museums in Naples including Cappodimonte and the National Archeological Museum, equally wonderful churches in Naples including the Duomo and its treasury, Santa Chiara and San Lorenzo (which has stunning Roman excavations alongside), the volcanic sites of Vesuvius and Solfatura and a boat trip to Capri, which has some wonderful walks - and more besides. So overall it was a wonderful holiday, despite not hearing from Thomsons (if we had we would have gone on the package tour to the Greek temple at Paestum, which is a bit difficult to access by public transport) and the bedrooms not living up to expectations. So I would like to return, but would book direct with the hotel and be very specific about booking a sea view room on one of the higher floors.

Room Tip: The "lateral view" rooms in the annex don't deserve 4 stars - pay more for a seaview i...

This is our (myself my partner and our 8 year old daughter) second time staying at the Bristol Hotel and i must say i enjoyed this visit even more BUT the welcome we got when we arrived this time was like coming back to a family re-union and the staff just could not have been nicer and more helpful and so very kind to our daughter whom they made feel like a princess - they really seem to value family and children here!

For anyone who is going to Sorrento it really is a must stay Hotel for the views alone!!.
It is so clean the floors sparkle - the food is great (but do try some of the restaurants in the town as well especially 'Meating')

The breakfast in the Bristol is just great with a good selection of freshly prepared fruits and lots of cereals, breads, cakes , juices etc etc. The Evening meals are fantastic too and very fast - the ordering and delivering process of the different course runs like a very well oiled machine with lots of waiters everywhere attending to your needs whilst being of course very friendly and courteous.

The hotel itself also doubles as a huge art gallery!!! there are so many beautiful paintings on all the walls everywhere and some of them are actually by some really already renowned artists so do enjoy these! The hotel for those of you who have never been before can actually seem like a bit of a maze when you stay there first but once you get the hang of the floors and doors and lifts you will thoroughly enjoy your stay! (Advice for getting around in the hotel: Note the different paintings on the different levels to help you get your bearings and remember where your room is!

Overall i have no negatives at all about the hotel but do note these two things. 1. The pool etiquette is quite strict and the 'pool police' will be keeping an eye on you & especially your children to ensure there is no diving and general pool side havoc being caused but in fairness this is a good thing overall - note that large inflatable toys are not allowed only small rings. 2. The gym is not very big and not over equipped - it has a few machines for cardio and an all in one weights machine - the free weights are suited more for the ladies and they could do with some heavier weights for men- but having said that what is in there is well maintained and works well & and most people wont be going too mad training on holiday anyway - so that is no complaint just the facts :)

We will certainly be returning again as the Bristol is certainly one of our favourite hotels ANYWHERE and we have been to quite a few in many locations around the world - and did i mention the views!! Just stunning...

If you can afford a few extra euros go for a sea view room with the balcony especially for those of you looking for a romantic break...you won't be dissapointed!

Room Tip: Get the Sea view room with Balcony if you can afford the few extra euros !!

Unforgettable service and courtesy from Reception (Salvatore in particular) to Restaurant to Pool Bar. Unbelievable views of the town, Vesuvius, and the Bay of Naples from our balcony, the Terrace and from the pool deck and just about everywhere in the hotel including panoramic views from the restaurant.
The separate Terrace area just below the pool was spacious, partially covered, really well furnished and a great place to chill away from the pool itself but close enough to swim.
Our room was spacious, modern and impeccably clean and the bathroom was large with loads of pure white towels. We had our bed turned down every night and were offered fresh towels.
Beautiful garden walk up above pool area(not suitable for wheelchairs)

Room Tip: As with most scenic hotels get a room as high as you can. We booked direct with the hotel and not th...

We stayed at the Hotel Bristol in July 2010 for our honeymoon, for two weeks. We were lucky to stay in a Junior Suite, the view looking out on to the bay with Vesuvius in the distance - beautiful! We had never stayed in such a lovely hotel. As with many of the hotels in Sorrento, the decor is not contemporary, but all I can say is everywhere we went within the hotel, it was spotless.
The staff were very attentive and our dinner each night was delicious.
We hope to return with our baby son, born 9 months after our beautiful Hotel Bristol Honeymoon!
