We stayed here in early May 2012. We are two female friends in our late 20's. We were among the youngest people staying in the hotel but we wanted to have a sightseeing holiday so this was a great base as it was quiet on an evening so we could be up early to explore the local area.
The hotel is set outside Sorrento town centre (we got stung on the first day paying 30 Euros for a taxi for a 5 minute car journey!) but the hotel runs a great shuttle service every hour and you can walk down or up the hill in around 15-20 minutes.
The reception team were amazing - really helpful, knowledgeable and even sorted out a screening of the football in the TV room for my friend as she didn't want to miss a big game!
The hotel was clean and all the staff were friendly.
Breakfast was a vast buffet selection of pasties, cakes, cereal, yogurt, fresh fruit, eggs, bacon and some other cooked breakfast items that could be cooked to order - even the pickiest person would find something to eat! We didn't eat in the hotel on an evening, choosing instead to sample some of the many restaurants in the town, but we were told by other guests that the food was lovely.
We sat by the pool one day as we needed a rest after all our sightseeing (!) and although it wasn't peak season (the outside bar wasn't open) you could get drinks just inside and waiters would serve them by the pool. There were also plenty of tables outside for sitting and eating or drinking.
The TV in the room has a few channels in English and although we didn't spend much time in there it was nice to catch up with a bit of news whilst getting ready or before going to bed.
The hotel has given us a double room when we arrived but when we asked for a Twin the room was quickly turned around with no fuss.
The hotel offer local tours that can be booked with reception - we didn't do any as we chose to 'slum' it and do it ourselves. Sorrento has reasonably good transport links if you are organised and plan ahead - the hotel provided local area maps and public transport timetables. We visited Amalfi by local bus, Vesuvius and Pompeii using the local train (Circumvesuviana) and Rome by train (changing at Napoli). Other guests said that the trips available through the hotel were excellent and well worth the money.
On the last day the hotel arranged transfers to the airport for us and even packed us a breakfast up which was a lovely touch.
All in all the stay was amazing - I probably won't be visiting Sorrento again as there are too many other places on the list but I will have fantastic memories of the holiday and especially Grand Hotel Aminta.
