“A nearly perfect hotel”
Reviewed 9 September 2008

Just arrived back from my honeymoon at the Aminta. My views on the hotel are as follows:-

1) Staff simply 5 star.

2) Poolside and Bar area very relaxed. Sunbeds 4 euro but must be pre-booked. Bar has a selection of drinks, Cocktails 6 euro and a beer 4 or 5 euro. Live music Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

3) Restaurant serves a variety of excellent Italian food. Dinner - choice of four starters including Fruit Juice, Soup, Salad or Chefs Pasta special. Main courses has choice between fish, meat and game with a veg alternative. Desert - choice of three sweets.

Breakfast - Cereals, Fruit juice, Pastries, Rolls, Fresh Fruit, Yogurt, Continental, Scrambled eggs etc additional 6 euro.

Don't miss the Gala night.

You need to request a table outside for your evening meal at breakfast time. Stunning view over the Bay of Naples as you dine.

Wine at dinner - try the Aminta, at 10 euro a bottle it is the cheapest but certainly of a good standard.

4) Free shuttle bus down into Sorrento from just outside the hotel. First bus leaves 9.00 last bus back 11.30. Times staggered through out the day with an afternoon break, but if you want a night out in sorrento you will need to miss evening meal as this starts at 7 and next bus is 7.30 followed by 8.30. My opinion is that the times are organised to try and keep you in the Hotel.

5) Trips out - great value, the mini cruise to of the Isle of Capri (swim in the med) followed by drop of at Positano (a must) or Amalfi. Pompei must do yourself - train to Pompei scavi 3.7 euro return for two. Pompei entrance 200 yards from station and great cafe just outside the station (share a pizza). Entrance 10 euro with a radio guide 5 euro. Naples well worth a visit during festival.

6) Free internet ask at reception.

7) Rooms - good and clean. Serviced every day, with fridge including mini bar (expensive). Great views of the Bay if you get seaview. The achillies heal is the noise, you can hear the two rooms next to you and the cleaner as she arrives early in the morning. Air con noisy. This is the big draw back for the Aminta. Take earplugs for good sleep.

8) Sorrento - expensive but head quickly to the supermarkets in the town for reasonable provisions. For example you will buy a small bottle of water for 2 euro in a bar. you can buy six large bottles in supermarket for 1.9 euro. You will need lots of water. Supermarkets have a good range of food, beverages, clothes and gifts. Lots of hustle and bustle in the town but lots to do.

Eating out, average main meal 10 euro in cafe up to 30 euro in restaurant.

Finally we would return to the Aminta, had a great holiday because of the quality of staff, cuisine and setting, all overweighed the one downfall - noise.

Wow what a hotel! Although very expensive for food, drinks etc the setting is amazing and the staff cannot do enough for you. We stayed at the Aminta from the 18th August-25th August 2008 and had a wonderful time. The food is out of this world every night. I have stayed at a 4 star in Ravello, Amalfi Coast last year and the food was nothing compared to this place! The rooms are very simple, but clean. I would have preferred a little more luxury but you don't go away for the room do you! We travelled with Thomson and the only problem was that the trips to Capri were fully booked and getting there on your own is a nightmare because August is a very busy month in Italy. All in all the hotel is fantastic apart from being very expensive, and the rooms are small and simple. Also its worth bearing in mind, the hotel charges for sun beds. 4 Euros per bed per day and although it is handy to have the bed secured, the cost mounts up! I feel if you are paying for the hotel you are also paying for their services. We ate lunch at the hotel and it cost us about 50 euros a day including our drinks plus evening drinks. This was not going mad either. Take plenty of cash.

Sorrento itself is great but you do lose something of the real Italy compared to more rural and less developed places. The views all around this region are simply breathtaking. It's worth a trip!

The views of Sorrento from the rooms and also the terrace around the pool are fantastic. The staff are friendly and the hotel rooms are a decent size with v.good A/C. If you don’t fancy taking the shuttle bus (which is free and very regular), the walk down to Sorrento from the hotel is easy and only takes 10 mins. You can also walk back up from Sorrento to the hotel, although not recommended in the midday sun!

Sorrento itself is very quaint with old narrow walkways and alleys, but has clearly been influenced by UK travellers and the food is not all that great either, especially the larger outdoor restaurants with waiters that beckon you in, they are just as hasty at beckoning you out again once you have finished and it’s a busy night!
All in all The Amnita is a great place to stay if visiting Sorrento.

Stayed here for a week with my daughter, son-in-law and 2yr old little boy. The whole week was fantastic. This was my second time in Sorrento, I had previously stayed at the Hilton Sorrento Palace, but the Aminta is far far better. The location is excellent, the service brilliant and all the staff very helpful and effecient. My only gripe would be that the shower cubicle in my single room was so small. If I had been much larger in size I would have had to complain. My family were accommodated in the Villa and this is highly recommended. The staff were wonderful with my Grandson. The pool attendants ensured we were close to the small pool each day, as requested. Paying for the sunbeds is common in Italy and at least you are ensured of getting one, but you do have to book early! I will certainly be returning to the Aminta. Thanks for a lovely holiday!

I've just returned from Italy where I stayed in Naples, Ravello and Sorrento. Our stay in Sorrento took us the Grand Hotel Aminta and the service we received led me to write this review.
When we booked this hotel we did so after looking at reviews from this and other websites, so we arrived very much looking forward to our stay.
On the face of it the Grand Hotel Aminta really is in a stunning location. The views you have of the coast line, Mount Vesuvious and of Sorrento itself are breathtaking, so if I would be going by that alone this hotel would have received a high rating.
The actual hotel itself really is very nice as well, the communial areas are bright and modern and definatly well worth the 4 star rating, as is the pool and bar areas attached.
The areas that let our stay down are the rooms, the rules (!) and the staff.
When we first entered our room we saw a beautiful bathroom followed by a bedroom that seemed more of an after thought - very basic with a tiny TV in the corner that didn't work and a very ricketing wardrobe that appeared more like a self assembly item from tesco rather than a 4 star hotel - the funny thing was that this wardrobe housed the room safe which didn't give us much hope in a break in and so was left unused.

Following a quick look around we found the hotel directory which listed all the facilities on offer and the many rules in place. The most bizarre being one that advised us that if we put anything in the minibar fridge other than the existing contents we would be charged €3.50 per day! I next read that if we wished to 'reserve' a sunbed by the pool then we would need to do so at reception, and at a charge of €4 per day per bed. Never in my life have I had to pay for a sunbed in a hotel I'm already paying to stay in, especially a 4 star one that was £140 per night. However, I accepted it and rang reception to book one for the following morning only to be told that they were fully booked for the week and I would need to check in the morning for a cancellation...!!

Then, after only a few minutes of turning the air conditioning on we found that it leaked just outside of the bathroom - this was discovered once I slipped over almost knocking myself out on the tiled floor. We reported this problem to reception which suprisingly led to a very unhelpful 'there is nothing we can do, turn your air-con off' - in 35 degree heat I found this unacceptable..
However, we thought we would go into the town and when we came back tell reception again and hopefully the staff would have changed shift. As expected they did change and when we told a different member of staff they said they would have someone look at it, but we later went to our room to find the air-con still leaking and just a bathtowell on the floor to soak it up. We went to reception to complain again to be told there was nothing they could do and we would have to wait for a plumber to be called out the following day, but when we asked to be moved they refused.
Following a restless night of little sleep due to the constant dripping and lack of air-con, we waitied for the plumber, he then confirmed that it was not a quick fix. Only then after demanding were we moved to another room.
Overall a dissapointing stay that could easily have been avaoided had the staff been a little more caring. Needless to say due to this and the 'rules' we will not be returning.

I booked this hotel after reading favourable reviews on various websites and was not disappointed. I was most impressed by the excellent service and the friendliness of the staff all round. I booked a room with a balcony and view which I highly recommend. We couldn't see the view from inside the room very well but the balcony view was fantastic. The food was very good and there were at least 2 evenings in our week's stay where the hotel made an effort to entertain guests with gala evenings. The hotel is a bit out of Sorrento but this is the charm. The hotel shuttle bus services more than make up for this.

We have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Sorrento. We stayed at the Grand Hotel Aminta for 11 nights and we were very impressed with all aspects of the hotel. The hotel is a good size, not too large and this meant that it was a very relaxing place to stay. The location we felt was perfect because it was near enough to Sorrento to visit daily for shopping, drinks etc but we felt that we were away from the hussle and bussle of this busy town. The staff at the hotel were excellent, very helpful and welcoming! We were also really impressed with the restaurant in the hotel. We have recently stayed in much larger hotels with buffet style restaurants and it was great to have waiter service meals each evening. It really felt like you were eating out at a nice restaurant each evening, rather than feeling like you were in a school cafeteria! We are a couple in our late 20's and we found this hotel offerred exactly what we looking for, we would definitely recommend it to others!!
