Reviewed 21 June 2014

Our first time in Sorrento was spent at The Grand Aminta which we chose for the views and in that respect we weren't disappointed as the hotel sits a mile above the town with unhindered views across the Bay of Naples.

Thought the bedrooms were a little tired, beds were very hard and the bathroom was a bit tight on space but looking at other hotel reviews this looks typical of the area. There are tea and coffee making facilities in the room so you can enjoy a cuppa on the balcony if you're not afraid of heights. Safe was tiny and just about got the passports in.

Hotel itself is spotlessly clean and the staff are excellent, very friendly and professional with several multilingual. Their knowledge of the area and advice on visitor attractions was brilliant and could save you a fortune. We did the trip to Pompeii on the train which was 2.20 euro each way and 11 euro to get in - slightly cheaper than the 110 euro a certain travel company wanted!

One downside for some people could be the shared tables at meal times. We didn't know this when we booked, neither it seems did the couple we shared our table with. Luckily we got on very well but I could see how some people could be uncomfortable with this. Food was a mixed bag as breakfast was just ok, lunch menu limited (and expensive) and the evening meals varied so much in quality e.g. tinned carrots and bland chicken one night, absolutely lovely beef and broccoli the next.

Courtesy bus down to the town leaves on the hour from 8am to 12pm then from 3pm to 11pm with returns 30 minutes later. If you can though take the walk down as it only takes 15 minutes and the views are great.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the pool have better views over the bay.

My husband and I stayed at the Aminta for a week at the beginning of June and loved it. It was our first holiday without the children for a number of years, and it was a great place to relax and unwind. Our room was kept spotlessly clean, as were the public areas and our maid was excellent. We stayed half board and enjoyed both the breakfast and evening meals, although this did mean that we didn't try the restaurants in town, some of which looked lovely. The hotel is on a hill overlooking Sorrento, and although we did walk into town and back once, the walk back is a bit of a trek when it is very hot, so we used the (very reliable) shuttle bus after that. Our room was on the fourth floor, on the opposite side of the hotel to the pool and had beautiful views looking towards Capri. If I have one complaint it is our room was near the lift and people tended to congregate outside there at 7am and have loud conversations on their way to breakfast - not the hotel's fault, but it would have been nice if people had been a little more considerate as not everyone on holiday wants to be awake at that time of day!
Overall we had a fantastic time and would not hesitate recommending this hotel to anyone wanting a relaxing holiday in Sorrento.

Room Tip: Higher floors have beautiful views, but I would ask for a room away from the lifts if you are a ligh...

The reception staff spoke excellent English and had upgraded our room as we were celebrating our wedding anniversary which was a lovely surprise, we got given a room with a balcony and a beautiful view of the bay of sorrento. The shuttle bus is great we used it to get back up to the hotel from sorrento as it is located on the mountain. The walk down is lovely though as only scooters use the path you walk on and it takes about 15 minutes. Would highly recommend delphinos restaurant, beautiful food and location. Breakfast at the aminta was lovely with loads of options, on request they can also do things like boiled eggs and poached eggs. We didn't have dinner in the hotel as it was charged at €30 per person and it was a lot cheaper to go into the town to eat but it did look like a lovely menu in the hotel. On a very small note we did feel as though the maid service In the room was a bit slap happy and not as good as the other 3 hotels we had stayed in previously on our trip in Italy, only very little things though such as leaving the cushions out of place and not putting the towel on the rail and leaving it on the bath. Would recommend this hotel to anybody.

Four of us stayed at the Aminta for a week (7 nights) and had a free room upgrade and moved to the main building instead of being in the Annex and stayed in a family room with a king sized bed & two seperate single beds in two bedrooms with 2 bathrooms including a jacuzzi bath! The balcony and sunset view over the pool & mount vesuvius & sorrento was absolutely fantastic, we had a double balcony to enjoy!!! Two complaints about the room (304) was the noisy air con (needed ear plugs) & lack of kettle/hot drinks making facilities... However the beds were very comfy and daily housekeeping means fresh towels and beds made which was good!!! I didn't struggle to get to sleep any night because I had ear plugs & watching the sunrise is well worth getting up at 5am in the morning for!!!

Staff were exceptional and very helpful/friendly. The cleaners were very jolly too. The shuttle bus was really good, it wasn't as full as I thought it would be & the driver is really nice!
The other guests at the hotel were very friendly and they all talk to one and another so there was a very friendly atmosphere with people offering restaurant suggestions, trip/excursion tips, even people offering sun loungers! We were a group of 4 (24 year old ladies) and we felt relaxed and even though we were younger than the other guests, we didn't feel out of place. We even managed to get text's from other guests asking us to go out with them which was awesome. The guests are generally older, honeymooners, older couples, retired & families. I will never forget the people I've met at the hotel. They were a real inspiration to me (especially the 70 + almost 80 year old couple who were telling us about themselves and they had so much energy and so many stories and I want to be like them when i reach that age). I saw a total of five brides in the week in Sorrento including two at the hotel meaning that the place is suitable for weddings! So sweet!!!

If you want a sun lounger, ask for the free beach towels at breakfast from reception, then go to sun loungers and spread your towel to reserve them - we never paid for any sun loungers and got them in the morning for use in the afternoon. People assume the sun lounger is in use if a towel is spread over them although i'm sure they will be booked in advance for 4 euro's each per day in the busier months of july-august. The large pool is very deep (1.7 - 3.1 meters) and a lot of the adults including strong swimmers hang out in the shallow pool to chat and relax which is (1.2 - 1.5 meters deep). Also the pool is unheated - the coldness can be a shock to the body but in that heat - it is much needed to cool down. The music at the pool is generally 70s-90s music which is fantastic because I know all the songwords because I grew up listening to it on Magic FM!!!

We can vouch for lunch & dinner as they are nice and we had lunch once and dinner twice, however it can be a little expensive compared to restaurants in town but you do get to sit on the terrace with panoramic views over the bay of Naples, mount Vesuvius & Sorrento. The drinks at the bar are VERY EXPENSIVE - 10 euro's for a banana smoothie and an unpriced list of cocktails!!! 5 euro's for fresh lemon juice or orange juice is a bit steep. We had the gala dinner on Wednesday and enjoyed the music. Complimentary breakfast could do with less sweets!!! On the last day, we checked out before breakfast and the hotel actually provided us with bags containing a very generous helping of breakfast for our trip to the airport which was a very sweet touch!!!

Don't hesitate to book this place, it is well worth it. We managed to book onto two excursions via the hotel so no need to mess around and call people, we did pompeii & vesuvius and the blue mini cruise which was great because they pick you up straight from the hotel and drop you off!!!

Room Tip: Get a room with a Balcony and Sea view, it is well worth the money.

This hotel has magnificent views overlooking the coast. Room was adequate but very clean. It's a shame that reception staff were not as friendly as I would have expected, especially in Italy. Shuttle bus was great, we had a very safe driver. I would suggest that you try the local restaurants rather than rely on the hotel as there are great places to eat for authentic meals such as La Fenice, O'Pulledrone in Marina Grande, but avoid Soul Fish restaurant in the marina as I felt being bitten by mosquitoes, the service was terrible and food was average. I would stay at this hotel again just for the views and peacefulness.

Room Tip: The annexe is cheaper and good value

Gem of a hotel in a beautiful setting, it is all about the views which I defy anyone to ever tire of. Comfortable beds, calm decor, spotless throughout, excellent service, efficient shuttle bus. A great place to unwind. Food very good but a little bland at times, as with most hotels. No hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone who doesn't need to be in the town centre. One word of caution, from June 1 they shut the inside bar and only have the terrace bar open in the evening. It can be quite nippy, if you like a late one pack a couple of cardigans.

The hotel and the room were beautiful and comfortable. The view from our windows and balcony were fantastic. We had a corner room and even the bathtub had the most beautiful picture window with a view of the Bay and Mt Vesuvius. The shuttle was great, we walked down to town a few times (steep and a little far but fine for us) but I wouldn't recommend walking up. We had no problem using the shuttle and the schedule was accurate so you easily plan for shuttle times. We were really glad that we decided to stay on the hill instead of in town-the view was worth it. Breakfast was really nice, we noticed some people had asked for fruit baskets which looked lovely-I am not sure why they didn't just put fruit baskets on the buffet as we didn't need a whole basket but would have had some fruit. Not a big deal, I am sure we could have asked for some. The staff was always friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: If you really want views, choose a corner room with a balcony.
