If you are thinking about going on holiday somewhere warm with your kids then you probably are not considering Sorrento, but if are then don't come to this hotel. Sorrento does not hold much to entertain youngsters so you would want something at the hotel to fill in and this one does not.

The pool looks very nice but most of it is over 6ft deep, 10ft for the most part. No adults can stand up in it, let alone kids. The side pool is 4ft to 5ft deep so little ones still have no chance. No play area for them either. The sun beds are all pre-booked and pre-paid for the day before so if you fancy a lounge by the pool for a while at any time forget it. It is either all day or a deck chair. The pool goes in to shade in the late afternoon so no lazing in the sun by the pool at the end of the day. The pool and patio is right next to a pretty busy road and the buses toot their horns as they round the corners so it is not very peaceful but you get used to it after a few days.

Your fellow inhabitants will be mostly english, mostly couples and pairs of older ladies. Some italians but kids were few and far between. The hotel is quite posh but not snooty, all the staff speak good english. Although it was apparently full it was always quiet in the public rooms. The food is good, nothing spectacular but nothing to complain about.

The shuttle to the town is a good selling point for the hotel. Very punctual, it takes about 10 mins to get up or down.

Another big plus for me was the free wifi with strong signal everywhere.

I would recommend this hotel to older couples and ladies in their 60's 70's without hesitation but if you have active 2 to 18 year olds in your party then I would not come here.

The hotel is situated up a hill outside the centre of town, which in the busy month of August is an absolute blessing (nice and quiet with stunning views)! The complimentary bus service runs regularly and it is only a short walk down to the town (around 15 mins), although the walk back will take a few minutes more - to catch your breath! The hotel staff are AMAZING!! very accomodating, friendly and helpful. There is good internet connection in the main lobby (the staff helpfully printed off our boarding passes) and the hotel provided us with local bus and train information. They do offer excursions e.g. to Pompei, however we used the train instead and saved an absolute packet compared. For example, we took the train from Sorrento to Pompei, at a cost of 1.90 (euro) per person each way. Entry to the site was 5.50 (euro) for under 25's (take your passport, driving licence or student card) and 11 (euro) for over 25's. The train station is easy to find and use too. (Please note that if you want to save a few euros, there are discounted rates for most places for students & those under 25 including Vesuvious, Herculaneum, Pompei and the Naples Museum).

We stayed in the annex away from the main hotel and the rooms were clean, cool and spacious. The pool is great for diving as it gets very deep (3'10 metres) and the pool side has excellent chairs, loungers (although there is a small cost daily for using these) and bar. The daily breakfast had a great selection and tasted delicious (fruit, cakes and hot selection e.g. bacon and egg). We only had dinner one night at the resturant but what we had was lovely, although a little pricey compared to town. They had live music evenings and the entertainment sounded fantastic. It's a very romantic hotel and I'd definetly reccommend it to couples. Although we stayed as a large group of 8, they were very accomodating - setting up and saving us a large table so that we could sit together every breakfast and ensuring all our accomodation (4 rooms in total) were close together.

3 members of our party had birthdays whilst we were there and after a request had been made for one birthday cake, all 3 received one for breakfast in the end! The staff really went the extra mile and made it feel like a 5 star hotel, rather then a 4.

Enjoy your stay - we certainly all did!

Our stay at the Grand Aminta was fab, fab fab..
Throughout the holiday we were extremely well looked after, the staff were helpful, professional and allowed us to relax and feel comfortable. The food in the restaurant was far superior to any of restaurants we visited in Sorrento town, possibly down to the fact that many of the ingredients are grown in the grounds. The menu (including the wine list) was extensive with a good range of options to cater for all budgets. I ate the steak with truffle sauce 3 times in one week...
The little things like a decent wireless connection, porter service on arrival and breathtaking views across the bay, made it a cut above other holidays I’ve been on.
There were a wide range of guests, from elderly couples, newlyweds and families with young children to twenty-something’s and teenagers coexisting without any issues. The place has its own atmosphere and allows you to have a great time and find your own experience.
The room was clean, air-conditioned and spacious. As someone who is generally critical, I struggled to find any faults and am just looking at flight options for a return trip.

hotel is top for most things but needs fine tuning, staff excellant friendly and will do anything to help.although the entertainment is limited he is quite good but can only be as good as guests support him.rooms spotless and cleaned everyday Hotel is half way up mountain so a bit awkward for access, although the shuttle bus is handy the last one up from sorrento is like a cattle truck. sorrento is superb something for everyone go there expecting to pay top price for food and drink, all in all though a fabulous holiday

We were very pleased with this hotel. Very comfortable and clean - and the staff were very friendly. It feels very airy inside - which is important in the height of summer. The air conditioning in the bedroom worked well, and had three settings. The views from the balcony were amazing - looking over the bay of Naples with Vesuvius looming in the background. I would certainly recommend upgrading to a "Room with a view/balcony".

The pool was great for the children - the main pool was deep, and there was a smaller off-shoot pool, which was also fairly deep (a young child would need arm bands). However it was lovely and clean (cleaned every evening).

It is a good 20 minutes walk to Sorrento itself, down (and then up!) a steep hill - however we made good use of the hotel courtesy bus, and if that doesn't happen to run at the time you want it,there are local buses.

The only thing that needs to be known is that there is a no shorts rule for gentlemen in the restaurant (for evening meal). We had to take my teenage son to Sorrento to buy a pair of trousers - and they were rather expensive! However the restaurant staff really took pride in the food and the service they provided - after a while I appreciated the no shorts rule!

The Grand Hotel Aminta is a nice hotel with breathtaking views. The package we went for included a cooked breakfast which we were glad for! Otherwise we would have been forking out 6pounds a day for scrambled egg on toast.

The hotel is also an hour away from Naples airport. A coach service is available from Naples taking you to Sorrento town centre for 10pounds.

The pool area is very nice but be warned there is a charge to use sunbeds. The chairs are free of charge but not as comfy as the sun beds. Be prepared to pay 4pounds per day for sun bed usage.

The villa aminta (annex building) is nice as some rooms have a sea view balcony whereas others look out over the olive trees.

The staff were very helpful and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The catering staff at breakfast were great.

The hotel provides a shuttle service to and from the town centre. You can also walk down into town which is not so bad. The walk up is a good workout and therefore the shuttle is recommended if you have the choice!

This is a really nice hotel but it would be nice to have known about the hidden charges beforehand.

Five members of our family stayed at the Aminta for the occasion of my daughters wedding at Villa Fondi (which I also recommend as a wedding venue). During our stay the quality of food was really good and varied. Breakfasts exceeded our expectations, with hot option available every morning (bacon, eggs, tomato and sausage ) as well as the usual continental things. We were lucky enough to have 3 gala dinners during our stay, one with a display of the Neapolitan Tarrantella.

The Aminta staff are helpful and professional, whilst retaining a friendliness that makes them easily approachable. We had the Wedding Breakfast in the Dining Room, tailor made to our guests requirements which included vegetarians and children . It was a pleasure to share the special attention afforded to hotel residents with our invited guests, all overseen by Signor Michele who manages the dining room with cool, calm efficiency.

If you want nightlife, then a hotel shuttle bus will take you and bring you back from Sorrento, but I have to say we only used this service during the daytime, as after eating all we needed was to relax with a drink on the terrace with stunning views over Sorrento!

Try using public transport, for buses you need to purchase a ticket from a Tabacci (tabacconist) before travelling. I don't advise hiring a car in peak season as the scooter drivers are a real hazard cutting in and out of traffic on narrow roads, also parking is a problem in the main tourist areas. We used the CircumVesuvia railway one day and were treated to neapolitan music from an accordian player travelling on the same coach! The high speed boats ply to and from Capri with regularity, get the small bus from the Marina Grande to Anacapri for a few Euro each - it snakes it's way up the cliff with spectclular views. The Amalfi Drive is a MUST!!!!!
