We spent a long weekend at Grand Hotel Aminta 5-9 July 2007.

Pluses:
* Exceptionally clean
* Friendly, accomodating staff
* Beautiful views of Bay and Vesuvius
* Convenient for visiting Ercolano (Herculaneum) and Pompei.

Deltas:
* Lots of road and other noise in room and at poolside. We slept using earplugs every night.
* Walk down into town is 20 minutes. We never had the energy to walk up the hill back to the hotel. A taxi from town was 20-28EUR.
* The one dinner we had at hotel was quite acceptable, but not great. Service was 'relaxed', but the staff were so nice we hardly cared.

We stayed in the Villaminta annex away from the main hotel. We liked it. It was only a couple minutes walk to the pool and main building through lemon and olive orchards. You receive a few amenities (safe, free internet, free coffee) you may not get in the main building. The room was spotlessly clean. Two single beds combined to make a huge kingsize bed that was double (or triple?) sheeted so the gap was not an annoyance.

The perfect weather meant we wanted the balcony doors open at night (in spite of a few mosquitos), but road traffic, barking dogs, and roosters welcoming the dawn made it awfully noisy. I suspect that no hotels in the area are any more quiet, and most are probably even more noisy. Sorrento is a densely populated place. Solution: bring ear plugs and don't worry about it.

We liked the people best of all: friendly and willing to help. The front desk had clear, accurate information whenever we had a question. The staff in the restaurant always had a friendly word. The bartenders were funny and mixed great cocktails. Sometimes the restaurant service was a little slow or orders weren't delivered exactly as requested, but when pointed out, the problem was quickly and smilingly corrected.

Breadfast contained the thing we happen to like: eggs made to order, ham, melon, chocolate coissants, yogurt, fruit (yes, canned, ho hum). We had a mixed experience at dinner -- parts were good, especially the pasta. Main course was acceptable, but not great ... I can't even remember what we had.

Walking down into town is easy and allows your own schedule. Use the "rural path" and not the main road. The free hotel shuttle doesn't run between 12N and 3pm or so, which was when we usually found ourselves leaving. We walked to the train station in about 30 minutes. Each night after dinner, we caught a taxi back to the hotel that cost between 20-28 EUR. Walk to the end of Corsa Italia that's closest to the hotel if you want the lower rate.

We never found a bad restaurant in town. The hotel will recommend Zi'annonia Marc at the waterfront for seafood. It's good. If you ask, the restaurant will give you a free courtesy car ride back to the Aminta.

If you have to choose between Ercolano (Herculaneum) and Pompei, I'd choose Ercolano. It's better preserved and is more compact. We spent more than five hours in Pompei and did not see all the 'must see' attractions. We loved exporing both places. It was a boyhood dream of mine to visit them; they didn't disappoint.

If you have the time, the hydrofoil ride back to Naples is fun. We used that service to return to the airport. It was 15 minutes by taxi from the hotel to the marina (Marina Picolo), 45 minutes on the boat to Naples, 30 minutes by taxi to the airport. (You may want to allow more time for the airport taxi ride; we were lucky with traffic.)

Grand Hotel Aminta - clean, friendly, convenient. We liked it.

Personally I like to see that I'm getting value for money and this hotel didn't tick that box. However, the hotel was positioned high on the cliff away from sorrento and took around 20 mins to walk to the centre (easy on the way down - not so easy on the way back!). There is a shuttle but doesn't run that frequently. For €1 you can buy a bus ticket and get the local bus (hotel has a timetable).

There were lovely views over sorrento but most were obscured by trees on the opposite side of the road, so no view from the restaurant as we thought but you could see from other areas. The pool area was a good size and clean so no complaints and there was a nice area for drinks and lunch. There was a huge breakfast selection but then again for €30 you would expect there to be. The staff were extremely friendly and very helpful!

However, I did have a complaint which was the hotels 'additional costs'. For example: to hire a sunbed within the hotel cost €4 a day. To use the fridge in the room cost €3.50 a day. You also had to pay to use your room safe. For the type of hotel and money we paid I would say this was just a little bit cheeky. Suprisingly, the shuttle bus was free.

Luxurious rooms, good breakfast buffet, great pool. Location is removed from the city, which gives a breathtaking view, but waiting for the shuttle (every 2 hours or so) was inconvenient (there are city buses, but the schedules are erratic and complicated).

the staff and service were excellent. our original room was located directly above the lounge, where live music was played several times a week. the music was very loud in the room; when we mentioned it to the desk clerk, she immediately contacted the manager and arranged for us to be upgraded to a better room for the remainder of our stay, at no extra charge.

the showers/baths were badly designed (water leaks, jets not working, etc), but everything was otherwise very comfortable, clean, and satisfactory. the view from the balcony was breathtaking.

Just come back from a stay at the Aminta with our young daughter and thought it was great!
Room was a good size, a decent bathroom and fantastic views.
Choice at breakfast was a bit limited (especially after a week), but we had dinner a few nights and thought the food was very good.
The only issue we had was that the hotel is out of town. There is a path down to the town, but it still a bit of a trek!! A few more buses up and down the hill put on by the hotel would have been good as we felt that we timed our visits around the bus timetable.
All the staff at the hotel were very friendly and accommodating.

Just returned from from a weeks stay in the Grand Hotel Aminta.
As stated in all other reviews the view is incredible overlookig the bay of naples. The room is very nice also.

However where i feel it lets its self down is the food. Breakfast was not a very enjoyable experience. We had dinner oncer in the hotel and it felt more like a work christmas party dinner. Food was very bland and it all felt very rushed.

THe bus supplied always arrived on time. However last bus up to the hotel left at 11:15 so unless you wanted the splash 20 euros ona taxi you had to get it. hotle or down to the town requires a high level of fitness and an appetite for danger. There are no footpaths and italians drivers are erractic at the best of times. Would advise highly against the walk.

All in all it is mainly the view you pay for. That there can be no doubt is quite breathtaking

Just returned from a 10 day trip to Italy. Spent 5 nights in Siena and then 5 nights at the Grand Hotel Aminta. The hotel had some of the best staff I've seen. The recommendations as to restaurants and activities were fantastic. The view from our balcony over the Bay of Naples was outstanding. Its downfalls were the continental breakfast and the beds. The selection was good, but the quality was not. The breads were dry and the fruit was canned. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel, so I can't comment on that. We had a queen size bed that was 2 smaller than singles pushed together. Quite uncomfortable to wake up to find out that the beds are no longer together.

Stayed at the Aminta from 8th - 15th June, the Hotel itself is okay, nice views from the terrace over the bay, however the beds are very firm, only one pillow supplied, and one small blanket if required, bed covers are one sheet and thin bed cover and it can get a little cold at night. Towels have seen better days, and the bathrooms rather small. There are no tea or coffee making facilities and you are charged for sun beds plus towels to cover them, there are sun chairs available for free. The food was very disappointing, in a land of lovely fresh fruit, we were offered only tinned fuit such as peaches or pears for breakfast unless you paid extra for fresh, the same applied to freshly squeezed juices as the only juice on offer was sweetened unless you paid for other. Lots of sweet cakes etc for breakfast, limited to one pre sliced type of cheese, processed ham and the occasional very good salami and mortadella. Staff pleasant, not overly helpful, I noted a lady fell quite badly and hurt her wrist after tripping over the foot wash used before getting into the pool, she was assisted only by other guests, and not staff members. All in all I would not return to the Aminta, I can't say it was awful, but I felt they charged foe as much as they could, and did not offer good value for money comparedwith many other places we have visited, I believe they should be providing what they expect you to pay extra for within the cost of the holiday.
