“Amazing Aminta”
Reviewed 22 August 2007

This is our second trip to the Grand hotel Aminta. We have stayed in many nice hotels, but none as lovely as the Aminta. The staff and facilities are superb and the friendly approach made us feel extremely welcome. The food is superb (they were very accomodating towards my food allergy). And to top it off, the views are breathtaking.

We were so sad to leave. We will definately be back.

First the good news. The staff are friendly, the swimming pool is excellent and beautifully maintained, there's a nice bar and lovely views of Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples from the veranda. Tourist attractions such as Capri and Pompeii are close by, and our travel agent provided very good excursions. The hotel is located on the side of a hill, just out of town - but some holidaymakers might prefer the sense of seclusion this provides, and the hotel runs regular courtesy buses in and out of Sorrento. No problem with the location, for me.

Now the bad news. Hope I've got enough space left.

Our room, although mostly clean, was slightly shabby, rather small and modestly furnished. The bathroom was pretty awful - dark and poky, with a nasty, narrow little bath, plating wearing off the brass taps and with only a tiny little shelf above the washbasin to keep the usual necessities. The air-conditioning is a shade unpredictable (I awoke with my teeth chattering one morning at about 3am), the bed was actually two twin beds pushed together (making it slightly uncomfortable for a honeymooning couple, I have to say) and the bedclothes were seriously inadequate - a sheet, an old blanket we found in the wardrobe, and a cover that appeared not to have been washed for a few years.

Our room had an adjoining door to the next room.

I found the hotel's food to be fairly dreadful, personally - there were very few dishes that left the plate without leaving an oil slick. To be fair, breakfast was fine if you stuck to bread, cereals and yoghurt - even the Aminta couldn't ruin those.

To make matters worse, the hotel likes to place several of its customers at the same table, school-dinners-style. We were fortunate enough to meet two very pleasant couples whom we enjoyed dining with, but if you're in the expectation that you'll be eating with your partner in privacy, beware.

The Aminta also likes to run what it calls "Gala Nights" in the restaurant, when there's a fixed, no-choice, eat-what-you're-given menu. These are made even less bearable by a singer / keyboard player who is every bit as loud as he is talentless. We fell victim to this phenomenon twice during our one-week stay.

Internet access is provided in two dark little booths with extraordinary, tiny seats that looked more like chair arms. It occurred to me that most of the hotel's guests would probably prefer not to have to cope with the (very awkward) Italian keyboard layout - investing the necessary 20 Euros or so in UK keyboards might be a good idea - when we stayed there, the hotel's clientele was overwhelmingly British. But this is a minor point.

The hotel lift is tiny. But again, that's a minor niggle indeed compared to the Aminta's more conspicuous shortcomings, though it might be more worthy of note in a good hotel.

In all honesty, I have to recommend that this place should be avoided unless you don't care about physical comfort or your diet (or perhaps if you intend to eat elsewhere a lot). I would certainly Come Back To Sorrento, but will be more careful in my choice of hotel next time.

We have stayed at the Aminta for two consecutive years, 2006 and 2007. Last year we booked through Expedia, this year, because of a problem with their website when booking, we went direct to the hotel, who offered us the same rate as Expedia.

We cannot rate this hotel highly enough. From the time you enter the hotel to the time you leave it - you have a top class service with a smile. Granted that the hotel is a short distance from Sorrento town centre, but the free shuttle bus from Sorrento to the town is reasonably frequent. It would be better to have a shuttle bus running from town at around 9.30 pm, but this is something that we doubt will change. You could do what we did, which was to walk into town at about 6.30 pm and get the 8.30 pm bus back to the hotel. Thereafter enjoying a drink or a cocktail on the terrrace with the music in the background and the panoramic views around you.

We enjoyed the food in Sorrento town centre immensely. We went to one restuarant a couple of times, it is called Lanterna Due, which is on a side street off one of the small squares on "the Drains". Bottled water can be bought cheaper and very nice sandwiches can be bought in a shop called "The Food Shop" which is located in the Drains. The other sandwich shops were slightly more expensive for the same food.

We chatted to a number of folks who ate at the Hotel. They could not praise the quality of the food or the service high enough. We didn't opt for this option as we prefer to eat outside the hotel whilst on holiday. However, I did not hear one bad report about the hotel food.

One bit of advice is to try and avoid the taxis when you arrive in Sorrento to the hotel. They expect and charge an extortionate rate. We came into Sorrento by the Currieri Airport bus, then got onto a Sita bus up to the hotel (as we missed the hotel bus). The Aiport bus cost 7 Euros and the Sita bus cost 1 Euro, which is alot cheaper than 25 Euros from the town centre to the hotel that we were charged last year!

Great Hotel - Staff and Service excelleant - not for families with small kids though because of pool depth - what else can one say - it was great, apart from location outside town, but views and hospitality make up for that - anyway on holiday what is a taxi ride?!!

My husband and I spent a week at the Aminta in July 07 after our wedding, and it was just what we needed. We had a room on the 4th floor - the room itself was reasonable, basic but clean and comfortable and a reasonable size with internet access and a tv. The balcony though was just great and was where we spent most of our time - the view was just amazing! We could see Sorrento, Vesuvius and Naples Bay all from our room, what more could you want!

We only left the hotel a couple of times - once to go on a road trip around the Amalfi coast (we had hired a car) and once to go down into Sorrento. Both trips worthwhile, but we equally loved the days where we just stayed put. Breakfast, reading on our balcony, lunch, reading in the outside lounge area, then perhaps an afternoon swim followed by a siesta, then dinner.

Staff were really friendly and helpful, and spoke English if you wanted to (although I tried to talk a bit of italian, not well!). The facilities were good, it was nice having a pool given how hot is was when we were there. The food was really good too, a nice selection and lunches were really nice.

If you're into fruity cocktails you must try an Aminta special!

A few handy things to know:

You can have lunch at the outside tables without booking, but for dinner you need to book if you want to eat outside.

The internet access in the room needs a username and password which you collect in person from reception - they print the details off for you, ours were valid usually for about 3 days.

We walked down into Sorrento but it was quite a steep trek! Needless to say after having dinner down there we got the courtesy bus back up!

There is road noise from the front of our hotel. One afternoon I wanted peace and quiet to have a nap and ended up having to shut the double glazed patio door to block out the noise. The noise didn't bother us most of the time, but when it does, the doors do the trick.

Just home from a week at the Aminta. Great views down over Sorrento. Good food and very good service in the hotel. We had a sea view and the room was very clean and a good size. Maid service every day which was great. Couple of gala nights, which were restricted in terms of food choice, however it was still of a good standard and enjoyable evenings. Altho you can walk down to centre in 10-15 minutes, coming back up the steep path in the heat of the day is not so much fun!! Use the courtesy bus!! Lots to see and do round Sorrento so its a good base for sightseeing. Shared tables for meals - altho not a problem as we met a lovely couple and enjoyed their company!! (get in touch M and R!sorry we missed you at the aiport!! :( )

  • Liked — The standard of the hotel was good.
  • Disliked — the location -3 km from centre of Sorrento-altho accept that the views are great and there is a courtesy bus service.

The Aminta gives you the best Sorrento has to offer. It sits high up the hillside giving panaromic views of Capri, Vesuvius and Sorrento from the wonderful terrace. Yet it is close enough (albeit via a steep path) to walk to Sorrento in 10-15 mins down and 15-20 back up for the fit and able - with great views across the bay as you descend. There is a regular free bus also but this only runs until 11.15 in the evening which is a little early for those wanting to enjoy Sorrento's evening atmosphere after a great meal.

Recommended for eating: La Lanternaude (old town), Taverna Azzurra (Marina Grande) and Da Gigino (also old town). Although we did not eat at the hotel in an evening, the lunch time menu/food was exceptional - and with excellent service.

Many people recommend the Foreigners club for food and views. However, the view from the Aminta is far more superior and does not have 'burger and chips' menus and football shirts!!
