“Stunning views!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 July 2012

We LOVED La Tonnarella. It is an oasis in the busy Sorrento area. La Tonneralla is perched high on a cliff. The views are fantastic, stunning in fact. The building was formally a family villa, just guessing probably 100 years old, and has been converted to a hotel with about 20 rooms. The grounds are nicely kept, with vines and flowers growing all around. The rooms are nicely sized, nicely furnished, and very clean. The staff is professional, helpful, and friendly. There is a private rocky beach that is reached by an elevator. The beach is very secluded from the busy beach in Sorrento. They serve some limited food and drinks at the beach. There is free parking. We did not eat dinner at La Tonnarella but the breakfast was very nice, eggs, breads, cheeses, meats, juices, etc. La Tonnarella being a small hotel may not have some of the typical facilities of some of the big chain hotels. It is a 10 or 15 minute walk to the historic center of Sorrento and the road is busy with a small sidewalk. We enjoyed the walk though and found it nice to be able to get away from busy Sorrento center at the end of the night. But you cannot beat the views, the old fashioned villa style building, the private beach, and the courteous staff. If that is what you are looking for, then this hotel gets FULL marks. For us it was one of the most pleasant and memorable hotel stays we have ever had. Thank you La Tonnarella!!!

I have given this hotel 4 stars as it is a very nice hotel in an amazing position overlooking Marina Grande and further along the Sorrento coast and across to Naples and Vesuvius. I don't want to be unfair to this hotel but it needs a bit of tender loving care. Our large room was very clean and lovely with a large bathroom. We had a very small balcony only one person could really sit on it. We were slightly disappointed in the breakfast and found it to have a poor choice compared to the other 2 hotels we stayed in during our visit to the Amalfi Coast (all 4 star hotels). We were also very disappointed that we could not sit outside to have breakfast on the lovely terrace but had to sit behind glass windows (in July), I noticed that a previous review said that you could but when I asked they flatly refused so all the guests sat inside. The hotel has a private stoney beach which was fine and there was a lift that took you down to sea level. However we felt that the beach area also needs tiding up and weeding especially around the bar area. The other thing that we didn't like is that this small beach area is open to the public so as a resident if you do not get down early you stand no chance of being by the sea especially at weekends. It's a shame that some sunbeds can't be saved for residents. We weren't particular impressed that we had to pay 10 euros for our sunbeds!!! With a bit more care this hotel would have scored 5. The hotel is well positioned for the town centre which is about a 10/15 minute walk and although up hill it was quite an easy walk..

Room Tip: We were in room 12 on the thrid floor although we had a lovely room we only had a small balcony.

We spent three nights here and found it very restful after the crowds in Florence. The room was very clean and our little balcony with a table and chairs a treat. The food was good in the restaurant and the service was excellent. We walked down to the town and while the hill was steep, city buses go by all the time if walking is a problem. We had wifi on the TV so could keep in touch. It was very quiet and peaceful, the view unbelievable from our room and the dining room. We would love to go back one day.

Room Tip: The extra for a sea view is really worth it!

My wife and I stayed here in May 2012 to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary. As everyone agrees, the views are amazing. We found the staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good and included in the rate. The dinner at the restaurant was not that good and overpriced. better to eat in town.

I was afraid the walk into town would be too long, but it was an easy walk and the hill not too steep. The beach is small but nice and there is a small "snack stand" for drinks and sandwiches. Also a neat shaded picnic area and restrooms. We had no problem with the elevator.

Someone in a previous review recommended suite #24. That was a real bonus and excellent advice. It has a huge L-shaped terrace with a day bed and furniture. Also a big bathroom with a huge double sized jacuzzi tub and rain shower. Fantastic panoramic view!

I would recommend this hotel. Additionally Sorrento is a great place to base yourself for day trips to Capri, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast. Also lots of good restaurants and the people were all very nice and friendly.

Perched high up on a cliff (well actually built into the cliff) with views that were so stunningly beautiful they almost didn’t seem real! We booked a superior double room and we had a view which stretched from Vesuvius to Sorrento, honestly words can’t describe how breath taking the view was. Breakfast was excellent and was served on a terrace with equally stunning views. The staff were, without exception, happy, helpful and couldn’t do enough to make our stay perfect. The private beach was accessed via a lift and then a short walk along a winding pathway which was an oasis of calm. The hotel is a 10/15 minute walk from Piazza Tasso and is for some of the way uphill but is far enough away from the hustle and bustle but without being remote, which some of the other ‘more upmarket hotels’ were. We found this hotel to an absolute gem in every single way.

Room Tip: Request a room with a sea view, it is worth the extra money.

This hotel was great. We had a room with a balcony with a spectacular view of the Bay. The staff was extremely helpful and went beyond the call of duty to help. The location is very good and it is a very short --and easy--walk from the heart of the town.

We had a great experience at this hotel...we arrived via bus from Naples and walked to the hotel (not for the faint of heart...it's uphill and a solid 15-20 minutes from the station...but definitely worth it if you are up for it!). We arrived to find this quaint, small Italian hotel perched on a cliff overlooking the city of Sorrento. The entrance was extremely inviting with a flower lined drive and archways. We opted for a room with a terrace... Albeit very small by USA standards... we found the room to be quite on par with European-size rooms. The terrace was definitely the highlight...double the size of our room and with a view worth a thousand words. You can't get much better than the view that this hotel provides. Breakfast was included and was above and beyond our expectations...juices and fruit, meats, cheeses, yogurt, eggs, an array of breads, and the most amazing sweet tarts. It was plentiful and the room it was hosted in each morning was the epitome of a European getaway...italian tile, antique tables and chairs and enormous windows that supplied spectacular views...a great way to start your day!
The hotel is a little ways from the center of town...approximately 15 minute walk and hilly...however it became part of our routine...we actually welcomed it after our large dinners each night.
I cannot recommend this hotel enough. I definitely would suggest a room with a terrace. However, if you are looking for a hotel staff that caters to your every need and require concierge service that helps plan your days you may want to look elsewhere. This hotel provides clean rooms, great views, yummy food and even a beach however trip planning is not their forte.
Restaurant recos: L' Antica Trattoria, Il Buco(a must!)
