“I really want to give this hotel 1 star”
Reviewed 3 September 2012

I want to give this hotel 1 star to put people off and keep it for ourselves. The rooms are a little shabby (but very comfortable, clean and quiet), the food is not the greatest (but it is above average), the beach is tiny (but incredibly atmospheric), the staff are friendly and efficient with that semi-intimate Italian way that always seems to hint that they have a private like that they wish to share with you if they dare. None of these sound worthy of a 5 star rating, but the holistic experience of this charming little gem can only be described as excellent. The hotel exudes the charm and elegance of a slightly faded grande dame who has granted you the privilege of her company for an evening.

We ended up in this hotel because they had a good price for an overnight business trip. We stayed an extra night because we couldn't believe our luck. We will return!

PS Don't be put off by their appalling Web site that really gives you no impression of what the hotel is like at all.

My mom, sister, and I recently spent several nights at La Tonnarella and we absolutely loved it. The view is absolutely unreal - some of our favorite time was spent reading and eating out on the amazing terrace, overlooking the water and the Amalfi Coast. We also took the tiny elevator down to the little beach and spent some time collecting sea glass and tiles that had washed up on the beach. Breakfast at the hotel was delicious, and the staff was very kind and helpful. We would stay here again in a heartbeat - I hope we'll get to the chance to go back!

Stayed here for 5 nights celebrating a special birtday of my wife Lynne. Absolutely stunning setting for a hotel. We ate in the restaraunt for Lynnes birtday and it was something special. Super food, superb service overlooking the beautiful Bay of Sorrento and Bay of Naples.

Our beautiful room had plenty of space and a large balcony with two sunbeds. Free internet, fridge, shower, flat screen TV and spotless. It was about a 20 minute walk into the town centre where you could catch a train, bus or boat to various other destinations. Huge selection of restaraunts. Would definately stay there again.

One minor criticism is the noise generated by other guests, you could hear them tinkling when on the toilet. Another is for the price of the hotel you would expect to find seats on the toilets in the public area

Room Tip: You must have a room that faces the sea for the exceptionally beautiful views

I stayed here for 7 nights in july 2012 with my family as my sister was getting married here. What a beautiful hotel, at first you will think it is quite old fashioned, but once you are taken in to the whole hotel, you can see why they have kept their furnishings so quaint. The scenery is unspeakable. The staff, especially Mariella were wonderful, catered to our every need.

i would definately stay here again. It is a bit pricier than i would normally pay for a week but it was worth it.

The beach is stoney, but actually it is a pleasant escape from sand which can irritate me when it gets into all your stuff. The beach is a private beach, and you get there by taking the lift down the clift side and the walk a few yards through a beautiful rain forrest-esque walkway. it is glorious.

The hotel isabout a ten minute walk from sorrento town, which is a beautiful walk and keeps you fit after all the italian food you will consume while your here.

I loved it!!!!!!!

Room Tip: go for one of the superior rooms to get a beautiful view of the coast.

We hesitated to pay that much (200 Euros per day) for our stay in Sorrento, but we did not regret our decision. Our 5-day-stay was fantastic. We rented a room with a balcony insisting to have an ocean view. It was fabulous, we couldn't ask for anything more as far as the view is concerned : the ocean, the Vesuve, the Sorrento Bay. We even had a fireworks one night. The breakfast was included and the dining room has also a magnificent view. We enjoy each breakfast and the variety offered (fresh juice, fresh fruits, eggs, ham, sausage, bread, yogour, cereals, pastries, cakes) . The personnel was helpfull, but very busy at the reception at times. You have to be patient to obtain an information, but nothing painful really.

On the down side : we were lucky to have quiet neighbors though, because the rooms are not soundproof and if you are quiet, you can hear voices coming from the rooms on either sides of yours. You don't hear any motors or cars though because the hotel is lower than the road.

There are 21 rooms and I would say that at least half of them are located on the ocean side, so it is worthed to ask for one of those. We didn't have diner at the hotel, but judging from the number of cars parked behind the hotel when we come back at night, it must have been popular and appreciated.

The hotel is located uphill and the road from downtown Sorrento to the hotel is quite busy. The sidewalk is narrow and it is sometimes a little scary when the cars are speeding on such a narrow street. It takes about 15 minutes to walk to the area where the restaurants and boutiques are gathering. We went to eat three times at the small marina. There are two or three small restaurants serving fresh fish. Delicious and not so expensive really for what you get. We enjoy sitting at a terrace, having the fishermen sitting nearby, some of them were getting ready for the next fishing day.

If you go to see Amalfi, for exemple, take a boat, not the bus. The road and the driver are scary although the view on the road is astonishing.

In summary, we had a wonderful time in Sorrento and we recommend La Tonnarella.

Room Tip: Basically, ask for an oceanview.

It was a last minute reservation. We have booked our hotel at 02.00 am and 12 hours later we were in our room. It was quite expensive for our budget but what we have experienced in this hidden gem was unforgettable. Great room with amazing view, shower and sunbeds in our private terrace, fast internet, aircondition, delicious breakfast, very clean hotel, very polite staff, what you can expect more! We had suite room which was a size an half football pitch! In the bathroom, in the middle of the pool/jakuzzi and the twin power showers, there was a status of Afrodite! A proper roman bath! Such a romantic room, the most amazing I have ever stayed. The restaurant view was the best in Sorrento, food was Michelin star. Definitely recommended. Thank you very much La Tonerella!

We LOVED La Tonnarella. It is an oasis in the busy Sorrento area. La Tonneralla is perched high on a cliff. The views are fantastic, stunning in fact. The building was formally a family villa, just guessing probably 100 years old, and has been converted to a hotel with about 20 rooms. The grounds are nicely kept, with vines and flowers growing all around. The rooms are nicely sized, nicely furnished, and very clean. The staff is professional, helpful, and friendly. There is a private rocky beach that is reached by an elevator. The beach is very secluded from the busy beach in Sorrento. They serve some limited food and drinks at the beach. There is free parking. We did not eat dinner at La Tonnarella but the breakfast was very nice, eggs, breads, cheeses, meats, juices, etc. La Tonnarella being a small hotel may not have some of the typical facilities of some of the big chain hotels. It is a 10 or 15 minute walk to the historic center of Sorrento and the road is busy with a small sidewalk. We enjoyed the walk though and found it nice to be able to get away from busy Sorrento center at the end of the night. But you cannot beat the views, the old fashioned villa style building, the private beach, and the courteous staff. If that is what you are looking for, then this hotel gets FULL marks. For us it was one of the most pleasant and memorable hotel stays we have ever had. Thank you La Tonnarella!!!
