Reviewed 6 May 2014

Stayed here 24 April to 1 May 2014 on package with Riviera Travel. Had top floor room as requested at rear as read that supplement for sea view was not worth it. Spacious room, good wardrobe space. Personal drawback - shower not detachable.
Loved waiter service in restaurant. Good choice for dinner and food generally hot. Also excellent buffet breakfast with fried eggs cooked on request !
Well situated for walking into town. Staff very friendly and helpful. Option to hold room to 4pm for supplement if you have late flight.

Stayed as part of a tour group on half board basis. Breakfast was ok, most would find something to eat but the evening meal was shocking. Small cold portions on cold plates, even after sending it back it was still only just warm. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and ate in 3 nights hoping it would improve, however it didn't so for the rest of the week we ate in the town in one of many excellent and inexpensive restaurants. The hotel was clean and the staff on the whole friendly, housekeeping was very good, so come on Villa Maria, employ a decent chef and you'll be on a winner.

Stayed as part of a tour on half board for seven nights.
Food was passable verging on very poor. Hot food often cold. Breakfast selection was not good and the evening meal left a lot to be desired.
if this was an Italian restaurant in the UK you would not eat there again after the first experience.
Reception was good with excellent helpful staff.
The best service was from the room attendant. She cleaned meticulously every day and kept the room spick and span. The hotel is tired and needs a good overall. Despite having a pool it does not warrant a three star rating!
Good location though. It is easy to access the fishermans village - the most interesting part of Sorrento with good restaurants/cafe's on the sea front. The central area is also a short walk away with a vibrant tourist scene.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the road. At least you will have a partial sea view rather than looking at...

Stayed for a week at end of March 2014 as part of a group so didn't book myself. Great location and on the surface - looks good. However, lovely lounge has no windows, and neither does the dining room. Such a lovely place in the world to be staring at 4 painted walls. Room OK, but walls paper thin - didn't turn on TV ourselves but was able to listen - word perfectly - to next door's TV. Beds hideously uncomfortable - narrow single beds. Both my friend and I suffered terribly with bad backs because of them. However, room service was good and clean sheets daily. Nice balcony that we didn't really use 'cos it overlooked next door's hotel's empty and dirty swimming pool. We could see the sea from another angle but we weren't in the room enough to appreciate it.

The breakfasts were excellent - wide variety of hot and cold food - even if the hot was luke warm but the dinners were disastrous. Only ate in the hotel a couple of times despite the holiday including the dinner. Life is too short to be in Italy and have absolutely shocking food plonked in front of you. Not a recognisable vegetable to be seen. It's not that they didn't have the ingredients - it was all cooked so badly and served badly too. Desserts were OK but the rest - YUCK. They charge €10 for internet for a week and €7 for the safe when I think both should be free. Bottles of house wine were 12 euros and water 3.50 and soft drinks also 3.50. However - from my point of view it was OK - it was a base for a 7 day tour and we weren't in the hotel that much. In the evenings we toddled into town and sat and had an inexpensive omelete in a nice cafe. Sorrento itself was absolutely lovely and the mediocre hotel didn't really affect the quality of the trip.

Room Tip: We heard that the double beds were comfortable but the single beds were not.

In a nice part of Sorrento with an easy walk to the town centre. the rooms were clean and the linen was changed daily. The restaurant was also clean and a good variety at the buffet breakfast.
Unfortunately the hot selection, eggs and bacon, although in a heated container, was often luke- warm because the lids were left off. The evening dinners were mediocre to say the least, with strange combinations. Four choice of starters (soup was best, always hot!). Four main courses but no choice of side dishes. Consequently we were served with e.g. meat balls on a lettuce leaf ,no sauce, allegedly roast potatoes, and soggy greens! The mashed potatoes were like water, fish about 4 inches by 2 inches, allegedly sea bass but it didn't taste like it. Often these dishes were served up cold and had to be sent back. Serving them on warmed plates would have helped. The waiters were O.K. at first but as soon as you asked for the food to be warmed up they couldn't be bothered with us.
The day staff were helpful but the night staff was hopeless.

Room Tip: A word of warning, if you do go to this hotel DO NOT go in rooms 519, 520 or 521. These rooms have a...

We stayed here as part of a group, so did not book it ourselves. We liked the room which was spacious , and had a small balcony with shutters which kept the room dark at night but meant we could have daylight on waking instead of turning on a bright light when only half awake.
There was only one problem - the bedside shelves either side of the double bed were about 18 inches from the bed which made reaching for a glass of water or a clock in the night involved a big stretch! Also they charged 10 euros for wifi in the room so we didnt bother, and free wifi in the lobby and lounge but we couldnt get connected. These are minor points as the room, lounge and roof terrace were all nice. Breakfast was cold, but there was a large selection of bread and pastries, cereals and fresh fruit and the coffee and hot chocolate very good, though the tea was just Liptons tea bags.
