“fantastic two week holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 June 2012

Just arrived back from spending two weeks at La Vue Dor hotel, we had a great time. The staff are absolutely brilliant very friendly, they made us very welcome. The meals were great, service was exceptionall! The most amazing thing is the view from the hotel it is breathtaking, to sit on the balcony overlooking Sorrento wow.The hotel is quite way up from Sorrento, but the shuttle service is great, making regular trips down and very reliable. We met some lovely people there and never heard a negative comment about the hotel or the staff. We would definitely go back it was heaven.

Room Tip: Pay extra for a sea view well worht it.

We didn't have the highest expectations of this 3* hotel as we got an excellent deal on Thomas cook. However, in our opinion, unfortunately the negatives of this hotel far outweighed the positives.
The outbound flight was fine and unremarkable, as was the pleasant (but longer than anticipated) coach transfer. We arrived at the hotel around 3pm to be greeted by a frosty member of staff and told bluntly our room wasn't ready (we later learnt that this abrupt behaviour was just the Italian 'way' and not a manner adopted only by the staff at our hotel). Not a big problem. We ordered an overpriced basic sandwich and waited patiently. Around half an hour later we got our room key and told to go to floor 6. Which is 2 floors below reception level. Ok then. Our room was basic and dated but clean and tidy. Smelt damp. The balcony and the view were magnificent and by far the best feature of the hotel.
Dinner times felt rushed and stuffy, again we found the staff cold and abrupt and wanting to get you in and out as swiftly as possible. The food was at most 7/10 on the better nights. Everything is cooked in too much salt and the same sauce. The bread was always stale.
Breakfasts were ok but like many others have mentioned, why on earth no fresh fruit or fresh squeezed orange juice from the thousands of beautiful oranges on the trees outside the hotel?!!!!
The room was very cold at night. When we asked reception if we could turn our heating on, they said no, not until the middle of June. Ridiculous!!!!! They offered us an extra blanket which wasn't good enough, so after a couple more attempts we were given a small blow heater to compensate. The shower was temperemental but useable. The bottled water as well as the rest of the drinks at the bar were overpriced (much like the rest of sorrento, as we expected) so stock up on water and wine as we did from the local supermarket in sorrento centre. Shuttle bus very prompt and useful. Without this, there are very few reasons to stay at this hotel as opposed to another one closer to the centre. The large gap which it doesnt run from between 12pm - 5.30pm proved rather inconvenient, especially when we got stuck outside for the rainiest day sorrento has possibly ever had!
Highly recommend visiting Pompeii, Naples, Vesuvius and Herculaneum. Fascinating. Unfortunately didn't have time for the amalfi drive. Don't bother with the recommended market in piano sorrento, not worth the trip, predominantly cheap clothes, aimed at the locals.
Return coach transfer was long (well over 2 hours) as we got stuck in horrendous traffic and Naples airport was the most unorganised and shambolic airport I have ever been to.
The final word, Sorrento is beautiful, you will enjoy it at any age and no doubt staying at any hotel, BUT in my opinion, I wouldn't recommend la Vue D'or to you unless you are a couple over 60 years old who enjoy early, quiet nights.
Wishing you a wonderful holiday.

Would definitely recommend this hotel for it's friendly atmosphere - it felt like home. Had a fabulous 1 week holiday there. Room was very clean, staff always friendly and helpful. Would definitely return.

Room Tip: Homely and friendly

A friend and I stayed in this hotel mid-May for 2 night while traveling around Southern Italy and selected this hotel given it's trip advisor rating and moderate cost. Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed in this hotel - it is far up the hill - way too far to walk to town therefore a car/scooter is necessary. Although it does boast some views of the hills and some of the sea in the far distance, it's very far up - and sometimes we found ourselves waking up above the clouds. The hotel does offer a shuttle service into town although it runs once an hour and we found ourselves stuck in town one night since dinner ran later then shuttle service. The hotel itself I found a bit cold in service as well - the front desk didn't seem happy to be there and our room had a very bland, uncomfortable bed and no toiletries and a barely working tv. Didn't get a chance to eat in the restaurant although breakfast was included which I would have rather skipped. In the beautiful area of Sorrento - I would suggest a hotel further down the hill near town so you can easily walk into town and check out the great eateries and boutiques but still get the lovely views of the sea and cliff-region. For the money and area, I would not recommend this hotel as there looked to be better in the area.

We chose this hotel through Trip Adviser recommendations and were very happy with our 3 nights stay. We arrived late, after the kitchen was closed, but they provided us with a very good salad and wine. Our room was clean with a comfortable bed and from our balcony we could see over the bay to Vesuvius. The shuttle service into Sorrento was very efficient and there was plenty of choice for breakfast. We had one dinner in the dining room and it was good value for money.

Our only complaint would be that, because we didn't arrive into Naples Airport until after the bus service ended, we asked them to arrange a shuttle from the airport to the hotel which cost 100 euros. We found that another couple had arrived on the same flight and had also asked for a shuttle which cost them 100 euros as well. I think the hotel could have quite easily arranged a single shuttle for us to share.

My wife and I stayed here one week on a Riviera holiday. We chose the hotel on the basis of the reviews, and it was a good choice. You will find a lot of consistencey in the reviews. It is a nice, family-run hotel, very spacious, good food, friendly staff. It is a few km out of Sorrento centre on a hillside, but only 20m minutes of you want to walk it. Our perception is it is definitely better in a place like Sorrento, with narrow roads, noise, crazy car drivers, many buses and huge number of motor cycles to be out of town. The hotel has a good free shuttle bus service. There is good access (elevator) for the aged and infirm. Rooms are very comfortable, but they don't turn the air con on until mid-May. Maybe mid-April would be better. They charge 1 euro an hour for internet access, not a lot but it seems to me the way things are going that internet should now be provided free, as it is in many or most hotels.

Room Tip: Rooms with sea view are very nice, tho you pay a little extra

Have just returned from a ten day stay at this hotel and would not hesitate to recommend a visit here if you enjoy a quiet and relaxing place to stay. We booked with Thomsons and our room was a good size, as was the bathroom, excellant shower. We had a side sea view overlooking the mountains and the valley down into Sorrento.
We stayed on a half board basis and found the food to be good, with something for everyone. The staff were lovely, very friendly and helpful. The mini bus into town is run to a timetable, so you can plan around that or get a local bus, which is so easy to do.We did not book any tours as it is easy to use the train to get to where you want to go and as already been said, very cheap!
This also applies to the bus service, we did go into town to get the bus to Amalfie as there s no point getting on anywhere else, unless you don t mind standing all the way. Now I must be honest and say I did not enjoy the bus trip at all,don t like heights and found the journey hard going with the bus packed full and the road full of zig zag bends. So we returned by boat which cost 14 euros each and was much more enjoyable, giving us a lovely view of the coast.
This was our first trip to Italy, Sorrento was beautiful and I would say if your thinking of going, then do! It was one of the best holidays we have taken and will return again without doubt. The hotel, ease of travel, lovely people all made it a holiday to remember.Special thank you to the Italian gentleman (whoever you are) that sang a song from somewhere in the mountain while I was reading a book on the balcony,Magical!!
