“A Classic 3 star experience”
Reviewed 13 August 2013

To begin with I think that most of the reviews about this hotel are exagurited. On arrival everything was good apart from waiting 1.5 hours for a Sita sud bus service (not hotels fault - but be careful), reception friendly good explanation (apart from a fact that no one said that there is a 1 euro charge per person per night due to travellers tax in Italy - again be careful), however the hotel seemed dated and not looked after properly, sofas in the lounge smelled and were just really old. Rooms: bathroom wasn't properly cleaned, especially shower, no fridge in the room is just criminal, as well as no tumblers or any glass ware, also no kettle or iron, apart from all that room was ok, bed comfortable, sheets changed daily. Pool area was good, however it would be nice if someone would enforce a rule that you need to shower before you jump into the water, just disgusting. Breakfast every morning was a proper struggle, everything not fresh, no fruit, no vegetables, for god sake it's ITALY. So not to bore the readers any more, very average 3 star. However on a positive note when you take a shuttle bus which is to be fair punctual, Sorrento and surrounding areas are just outstanding, recommend restaurant La Lanterna, absolutely mindblowing food and service, true Italy. Regards!!!

Just returned from a wonderful week at this hotel in Sorrento (5th-12th August). Everything was fantastic. We arrived to find we had a room with a sea view, looking straight out over Sorrento towards Vesuvius. The rooms are an ideal size and the whole hotel is spotlessly clean.
The hotel is near enough to Sorrento to get to the action but it was nice to get out of the hustle and bustle and relax by the pool surrounded by the fantastic scenery in the afternoons. The hotel shuttle bus is great and, for the 12.30-17.30 gap in the afternoon, the local buses are regular and easy to use - just buy your tickets in advance from the station. The easiest thing to do is buy a bunch of 2.50 euro tickets which are single use. I would also recommend the train to get to Pompeii, Herculaneum etc. Very good value at 2.20 euro each way and, although a bit battered looking, we didn't really have any problems with delays. They run roughly every half an hour so it's a very convenient way to see the sites on a budget.
Breakfast at the hotel was fab - fruit, cereals, more cake than you can imagine and great coffee. Dinner far exceeded our expectations; 3 courses of usually pasta/soup/salad followed by a fish or meat course and ending with lovely fresh fruit or wonderful cake. I would heartedly recommend the house red wine as well. A large bottle is 12 euro, which is very reasonable. A small 6.50 euro bottle is perfect for a couple of glasses each too. The waiters are wonderful!
All the staff are friendly and super helpful - any problems or queries, whether it's finding out about the public transport or getting an early coffee before your transfer home - nothing is too much trouble. We will definitely be staying here next time we visit Sorrento!

We stayed here for 2 weeks from end of July - 10th aug 2013.
Everything has been said already about this hotel, excellent staff, spotlessly clean and fantastic views.
I would recommend paying the extra for a fantastic view over Sorrento and mount Vesuvius.
The staff here could not have been more friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. The only thing is the times of the shuttle bus to and from Sorrento, it is a super service the hotel offers free of charge but you will find there is no service between 12.30 pm - 5.30 pm which can be a bit restricting at times.
We will return to here again in the future.

We have just returned from a five day stay here, and wanted very much to add our voices to praise this wonderful hotel! The beds are comfortable and the rooms clean and cool, while the staff are wonderful, friendly and accommodating and can give lots of advice about local places of interest. If you do not want to go back into town to eat at night, the hotel menu is good and, we thought, good value for money. The views are absolutely amazing- the hotel is set into the steep hillside with lots of little vineyards and olive orchards which follow the road into town. Do make sure you take a room with a balcony on one of the higher floors to see the fantastic view out over the Bay of Naples. The hotel (like many of its neighbours) offers a free shuttle bus to get you in and out of Sorrento, which is very useful especially after a hard day's sight seeing; the hike back up the hill would be quite hard work! (Make sure you take the timetable with you, as there is a gap in the service in the afternoon.) It was also lovely to be able to go back and cool down in the Hotel swimming pool for a rest and recharge before going out in the evening.

We used the hotel as a base for visiting Vesuvius, Pompeii and Herculaneum - you can use the local train service to access these places quite easily, and if you want to visit Capri, or one of the other islands, it is possible to do book a service from the Marina Piccolo in town. We feel that we still have so much left to do and see we are gong back - and we will definitely stay at L'Hotel Vue D'Or!

Room Tip: Choose a room on a higher floor - and with a balcony!

As most things have already been said about the main points of this hotel I'm reviewing it as a base for our Riviera travel tour. Firstly, you wouldn't find a friendlier hotel, the staff were wonderful. Secondly it was spotlessly clean, and the beds were comfortable.
The extra money for the balcony was well worth it, as the evenings were warm in July and it was lovely to sit outside and cool off, looking over the hillsides with twinkling lights.
We had room 355, a twin room, though the beds were together. The balcony overlooked the sun terrace, the pool was below, but not seen. We had views of Vesuvius, the Bay of Naples and the wooded hills to the side. Our balcony got the sun first thing in the morning, and was shaded late afternoon...perfect. In the evenings the pool and sun terrace were closed, so there was no noise. Many nights there were fireworks across the bay, which was entertaining.
The pool was refreshing after busy trips out, and we didn't find it crowded...mind the step from the shallow to the deep end though, you do go down suddenly.
Being on an organised trip, you tend not to find out many local details for yourself, but it's worth venturing out by yourself in free time.
The shuttle bus was excellent and easy to use, the timetables were on cards in reception, just walk outside and hop on, there's plenty of time after the evening meal, bear in mind at the times the bus doesn't run most of the shops are closed anyway, this is abroad...they have siesta time.
In the evenings Sorrento comes alive with families eating out together, and shops busy with customers. Taste the limoncello in the shops, we also liked the melon one, pack under your allowed weight as you can buy lovely bottles of oil on the Amalfi coast, and all kinds of pasta, which was good value in the supermarkets.
We loved Sorrento, the Amalfi coast drive,( sit on the right side for the best views) Pompeii and Herculaneum. A dislike for us was Naples, unless you want to see the museum I'd give it a miss, we were plagued by beggars and not much was open, as it was Sunday, I'd rather have explored the Sorrento area or gone to the beach.
We found most of the shops charged the same prices for items with beers at 5 euro, water at 1 euro for small bottles, 2.50 for large.
don't miss the chairlift in Anacapri, even my scared of heights husband was glad he did it, the chairs are single, and you travel up through a wooded area, so you don't feel you are hanging in mid air, it takes around 13 mins. there is a good café at the top, also visit the gardens in Capri for welcome shade and amazing views, buy yourself an ice drink flavoured with choices of strawberry, lemon, mint, melon etc to cool you and relax.
My tips; take a travel kettle, lots of bottled water is available at tourist spots and is well chilled, take some change with you as some public toilets charge, a once a day sun lotion is a boon as you don't have to carry bottles around all day, bear in mind some restaurants and cafes charge you for using a table to cover linen etc, this charge will be at the bottom of a menu board, normally a euro or two. July was very hot, and if you are doing guided tours shade isn't always available, so make your own with a hat or a brolly.
Enjoy it, it's a beautiful place with very friendly people.

Room Tip: Room 355 on the third floor was lovely, there is a lift, the balcony was worth every penny, views of...

We stayed here for 2 weeks based on the strength if other reviews & we were not disappointed.

The view is stunning and the hotel is very clean. The staff will go out of their way to help whether it be by advising on excursions, explaining the public transport system or making reservations for guests at restaurants in town. Having said that the good was so delicious at the hotel restaurant we only ventured out to eat once during our 2 week stay.

With a gluten intolerance I was apprehensive about bring able to eat in a country where the diet is based strongly on wheat, however I needn't have worried. The restaurant staff arranged gluten free pasta and spaghetti & provided gluten free rolls or crispbreads to accompany every meal so there was very little I could not eat. I managed to eat delicious food while avoiding gluten far more easily than I can in the UK.

The hotel is above Sorrento in the mountains & is fairly remote. The shuttle bus unfortunately does not run between 12.30-5.30 however there is a public bus stop opposite the hotel so once you understand the timetable system it is not difficult to get down into the town or back when the shuttle bus is not running.

Gala night on Thursdays where you will be serenaded by a mandolin is also not to be missed!!
