“I loved this place.”
Reviewed 23 September 2008

Firstly - the location is perfect. Overlooking Sorrento and looking straight at Mount Vesuvius. We stayed in room 61 which (I believe) had the best views we could have asked for. As it was out of town, there were a few options only. Public transport which was quite good. The hotel sold tickets in reception and they were 1 Euro for an hours journey, or there was a shuttle bus which at certain times of the day left every 20 minutes. It might mean you have a little planning to do, but a minor inconvenience I thought.

The hotel itself was lovely, the decor was nice and the reception staff were friendly, and as far as i'm aware, this is a family run hotel, and it showed in the nice atmosphere. The rooms weren't massive, but they were enough for us, and our balcony was nice. The waiting staff were excellent. I'm not a coffee drinker but the girlfriend appreciated the excellent and generous pot of coffee offered every morning. They were chatty and friendly, and never seemed to get stressed.

The place was very clean and I found it quite comfortable. I didn't use the pool at all as we were sightseeing, but I did go onto the terrace a few times and it's perfect if you're looking a place to sun yourself.

The only drawback to me was the fact we had to share a dinning table. Luckily, the English couple we were sat with were lovely people and the waiting staff showed us an extension that was being bulit so this problem wouldn't arise in the future.

I have to say, I thought this place was well above average for the price we paid - and the dinning arrangements were the only reason why I (harshly) didn't rate the hotel excellent.

  • Liked — The atmosphere and the views.
  • Disliked — It may be a bit off the beaten track for some people.

Up on the hills outside Sorrento, La Vue D’Or is the perfect place to start your holiday. Staff were attentive and helpful at all times, even when we arrived around 1.30am.

Being Family run, this Hotel benefits from a much more personal touch than other hotels we have stayed in. The food was pleasant, if not particularly exciting (we were B&B, but had Dinner one night), and Bar Staff are helpful, polite and quickly know who you are and what you want to drink.

Breakfast was buffet and well stocked at all times, even when we came down about 5 minutes before it was due to finish.
Coffee was fantastic and all food freshly cooked and tasty. Waiting Staff were very friendly too, and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Room cleaned every day during our week, and pool / poolside cleaned every night too.

Had a great view across the valley down to Sorrento, particularly good at night across the Bay. One evening there was a wedding reception at the Hotel, but they ensured the guests did not spill outside by the pool, which would have been quite noisy for those trying to sleep, so they get my thumbs up for that too. Also a free minibus to and from Sorrento all day - The 11.30pm bus back to the Hotel is an experience not to be missed, driving up the windy roads of Sorrento in almost pitch Black - lol!!

I cannot praise this Hotel enough, and we WILL be staying there when we visit Sorrento again, hopefully within the next year or so. Book this Hotel and you won’t be disappointed.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay:
Use this great Hotel as a base for travel to and from Sorrento, and to the Amalfi Coast. Don’t miss Pompeii and Vesuvius, but for us Naples was a bit disappointing - quite dirty in most places, but when we found a "Real" Italian restaurant, I can honestly say we had the best Pizza we have ever tasted.

Take the train from Sorrento to Naples, extremely cheap and clean. Hire a car, and take full damage waiver insurance - you may just need it!!

Had a wonderful 2 week stay at Hotel La Vue D'or. Staff are fantastic, helpful and we had a great laugh with Nino & Angelo, who are absolute gentlemen and very helpful indeed (as where all the staff).

Food in the restaurant was excellent and big servings are given for Starters and Main course which, after dinner, made me just want to cosy up in my bed and sleep (in a nice way of course :-)) The staff in the restaurant, absolute gentlemen also and very polite and professional.

If you decided to stay in hotel for lunch, ie snacks, these could be expensive (a small plate of chips - 5 Euros!) but still tasty. A few downsides if you have young ones who like fizzy drinks - 2 Euros for a wee bottle of coke (they do not have soft drinks on tap).

Breakfast is continental but lots to choose from and really yummy. Makes you feel like you are really on hols, no fried muck but you can order if that is your preference :-)

Hotel has a mini bus which takes guests into Sorrento and return more or less every hour but Siesta is taken from 12:30 onwards until 17:30 and then last bus is 23:30. The bus can be quite busy with guests piling on after dinner 20:45 and returning at 22:30 is also busy. We just waited on the last bus at 23:30 which was ideal. Would be even better if bus ran until early hours of morning, as the night life in Sorrento is buzzing and you feel as though you are on curfew having to go back on last bus - taxi fair is extortionate, but if there a several of you sharing taxi, then not too bad.

The views are stunning from the hotel and was a great pleasure to look out every day at Vesuvius, knowing that you have climbed to the top of this amazing place.

Travel on the ferrys/boats is ideal to see Capri, Positano and Amalfi, no need to pay big tour company costs, but we did Pompei and Vesuvius in one day through the tours and picked up from hotel and dropped off on return all for 44 Euros, but you do pay entrance fee to Pompei - 11Euros and Vesuvius 6.50 Euros but worth it.

One downside and this is a minor one - Air conditioning at hotel is payable at 4 Euros per day (limited times). This is not disclosed if you book through package hols and only discovered when you try to put air con on and nothing works (slightly noisy aswell).

Hotel was full of Brits, mainly English folk (if you like that). Especially enjoyed by the retired /senior guests aswell whom we had great fun with.

You may have to get up early to get your sun bed in hotel as we found out that folk get up at the crack of dawn for breakfast and then quickly rush to put their towels down and dont bother sunbathing until hours later...a bit cheeky really but you just have to be double wide and get there early yourself :-)

We ate out quite a few times in Sorrento as we love Pizza and this was not on the menu at hotel. Also found a wee bar called Dolio Inn fantastic service, delicious pizza and plenty of sports to watch (Setanta and sky sports, if you love the footy). Would highly recommend this bar. Also - In the early 1990's they decided to expand the bar downwards by digging a cellar and found that the bar had been built on the Dolio of an old Roman Villa dating from the II - IV century AD. and probably used to store grain. These excavations have been made into a feature in the cellar and everybody is welcome to go down and see them (there are even a couple of tables down there so you can stay and have a drink) a main Roman wall supports the bar and you can look down through glass to see the foundations and various pottery finds.

Overall, we had fantastic time and would definitely go back to Vue D'or rather than the likes of Hilton etc....as we were made to feel so welcome and felt quite sad to leave.

Ciao

Me and my boyfriend stayed here for a week in Sorrento. We couldn't have asked for a better hotel in my opinion. We arrived, shattered after a not so nice flight. The hotel had left us a complementary plate of food each, meats, breads, cheese etc. We found all the other guests to be friendly and it was nice and quiet for sunbathing.

The free shuttle bus was brilliant (they had just invested in a brand spanking new bus towards the end of our week) it ran every hour and took us to the centre of Sorrento - although we did forget about the break for siesta from 12:30 - 5:30pm but as long as you remember this you should be okay, I think the last bus picked up at 11:30 in Sorrento but this was fine for us as we we're always shattered from long sunny days sight-seeing.

The hotel was extremely clean, we had a good size room and the hotel itself was very cosy and nicely decorated. The pool area was also very nice.

There was really nothing I could fault this hotel for I would definitely recommend it - although not to anybody wanting a wild time! But then you wouldn't go to Sorrento for that!

  • Liked — cleanliness
  • Disliked — a bit far out at mid-day without the shuttle bus

We only stayed two nights and wish we could have stayed much longer! The room, staff and view were exceptional. A free shuttle bus takes you into the main town of Sorrento, so getting to and from is so easy. I would definetly stay here again!

  • Liked — Great pool and view.
  • Disliked — the taxi ride we had to take there...we didn't know about the free shuttle so we paid a lot for a taxi ride as the hotel is a bit of a distance uphill from the train station.

Staff were VERY helpful and hard working. Food good. Room clean and well cared for tho air conditioning was sometimes inadequate. Fabulous view of the bay and Vesuvius (worth paying a supplement) nice pool area and restaurant. Would be better if free shuttle service ran pm but service bus stopped at the hotel too.

I stayed 3 days with my wife in this hotel, and my only regret was not spending more days there. The rooms are very clean, beautifull and confortable, the view from the hotel (Located in a hill) in one of the most beautiful of the entire region, the atendents are very kind and helpfull. Its quite far from city town what is not a problem if you are by car, if you aren´t, there is a free shuttle service that works very well, every hour until 11:00 PM . Although it´s classified as 3 stars, for sure its level is 4 stars hotel, they need only to put minibars in the rooms .

  • Liked — View, rooms
  • Disliked — no minibar in room (Not a big problem as the bar still open all night)
