This was a late booking so there wasn' a lot of choice but we (wife and I, early 30s) were pleasantly surprised on our arrival at La Vue D'or Hotel.

Nice clean, shiny marble foyer with very helpful and welcoming reception staff. Even though we arrived at midnight, the hotel saved us something to eat which we were very grateful for.

ROOM
I found it a little small but everything clean, with television, balcony, hairdryer and optional A/C. We tried to pay for the A/C but sadly ours wasn't working and we had to swap to a different room later. Generally room was good and I had little complaints.

STAFF
Being a family run hotel, there is a nice feel to the hotel and I think that helps as people seem to happy socialising with each other in the bar area and pool. Staff will help you with buses, walking maps and general information and their english is very good. They always acknowleged you and were always happy to help.

RESTAURANT
We went half board and really enjoyed the evening meals. We usually like to eat out for one or two nights of a half board holiday but we felt we didn't want to as the waiters were excellent and we loved the 3 course meals (never had the same meal twice in the 7 nights we were there). WIne selection wasn't bad either.
Unfortunatley breakfast at the hotel wasn't the best and if I had one improvement to make, it would be breakfast - supposedly 'Continental style' but I've had better continental style in a Travel Lodge on the M1!

POOL
Big enough and sun loungers excellent. Could be cleaner, but at least not over chlorinated. It was also quite deep and the depth changes were not marked out very well so safety could be an issue if you weren't a good swimmer or had little ones.

LOCATION
Loved the location, with the views over Sorrento. Good walking tracks into Sorrento and also St Agata (nice quiet village and worth a visit). We took the hotel run bus most of the time but the local buses were easy to navigate. Unless you like a challenge, I probably wouldn't recommend driving here. You will find it difficult getting back from Sorrento town in the evenings after 1130pm as the buses stop and taxis are about 50 euros!

THINGS TO DO
Absolutely loads to do here and 1 week wasn't enough. Amalfi drive, Positano, Herculaneum, Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri - there are loads of places to visit and all easily accessible by bus, train or boat.
Unfortunately there aren't too many quiet beaches here and you may beed to get a taxi or bus to one of the many privately owned beaches.

OVERALL
Loved the location and would come back here if I was coming back to Sorrento.

We stayed in this hotel in September for 2 weeks. This hotel is very clean and comfortable. Staff and friendly and helpful. It's location is perfect for exploring the Sorrentine Peninsula and the Amalfi coast. We also booked a tour guided trip to Rome and have vowed to return for a longer break. Such a beautiful city.

The hotel is situated on the hillside outside Sorrento and the hotel operate a courtesy bus which was fantastic. We shopped by morning and returned to the hotel at lunch time to relax and sunbathe however the weather was warm when the sun disappeared behind a cloud it was quite cool but that's just your luck with the weather.

It is a fantastic hotel to base yourself to explore. The train takes you into Pompeii where you can then obtain a walking guide around the site. Naples would be worth a visit too if you are into the artefacts that are stored in the museum.

Local buses can be a bit crowded as we found out when we went on one round the Amalfi Coast. They pile everyone on and as many as they can standing too so we were really cramped but for 6 euros we spent a wonderful afternoon in Amalfi and beautiful little town with fantastic scenery all of it's own. Also the cathedral with the remains of St Andrea (Andrew) parton saint of Scotland is spectacular.

We enjoyed the food. Breakfasts continental style with no cooked foods but everything really fresh. Cereals, cheese, meats, yoghurts, toast, rolls and Ista bread (cheesy loaf with bacon bits in - really tasty toasted with butter). Evening meal was chosen at breakfast and always piping hot tasty traditional Italian food.

The courtesy but in the evening was a god send as taxis are costly - up to 50 euros for a 15 minute ride up the hill. It was great to eat dinned and then go in to town for a leisurly stroll to Piazza Tasso and sit in a cafe with a glass of wine watching the world go buy.

I was really sad to leave this lovely place and would definately recommend this to everyone who wants to visit Sorrento.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights at the end of a two week tour around Italy. The hotel was fantastic and the staff very friendly and approachable.
The hotel is a little way from the centre of Sorrento, we arrived by train and took a taxi up to the hotel, this did cost us 40euros, which we felt was expensive. The hotel ran a (free) mini bus into town nearly every hour, which we and the other guests made full use of. (The hotel will provide you with the timetable).
The rooms were of a good standard for the star rating and the views from the balcony were amazing (in fact the sorrento tour bus stopped a little way down from the room so tourists could also benefit from the amazaing view)
The breakfast was fine, the normal cold meats and cheese, cereals and toast that you would expect to find in most hotels.
Although we did eat in some of the restaurants in Sorrento, the hotel restaurant was good. The waiting staff friendly and welcoming. You could choose to have a two course meal (pasta or main and dessert) or a three course meal (past, main and dessert), the salad bar was complimentary and you could go up as many times as you wanted. The menu changed everyday, and you could ask at reception to look at the menu during the day.

Firstly - the location is perfect. Overlooking Sorrento and looking straight at Mount Vesuvius. We stayed in room 61 which (I believe) had the best views we could have asked for. As it was out of town, there were a few options only. Public transport which was quite good. The hotel sold tickets in reception and they were 1 Euro for an hours journey, or there was a shuttle bus which at certain times of the day left every 20 minutes. It might mean you have a little planning to do, but a minor inconvenience I thought.

The hotel itself was lovely, the decor was nice and the reception staff were friendly, and as far as i'm aware, this is a family run hotel, and it showed in the nice atmosphere. The rooms weren't massive, but they were enough for us, and our balcony was nice. The waiting staff were excellent. I'm not a coffee drinker but the girlfriend appreciated the excellent and generous pot of coffee offered every morning. They were chatty and friendly, and never seemed to get stressed.

The place was very clean and I found it quite comfortable. I didn't use the pool at all as we were sightseeing, but I did go onto the terrace a few times and it's perfect if you're looking a place to sun yourself.

The only drawback to me was the fact we had to share a dinning table. Luckily, the English couple we were sat with were lovely people and the waiting staff showed us an extension that was being bulit so this problem wouldn't arise in the future.

I have to say, I thought this place was well above average for the price we paid - and the dinning arrangements were the only reason why I (harshly) didn't rate the hotel excellent.

Up on the hills outside Sorrento, La Vue D’Or is the perfect place to start your holiday. Staff were attentive and helpful at all times, even when we arrived around 1.30am.

Being Family run, this Hotel benefits from a much more personal touch than other hotels we have stayed in. The food was pleasant, if not particularly exciting (we were B&B, but had Dinner one night), and Bar Staff are helpful, polite and quickly know who you are and what you want to drink.

Breakfast was buffet and well stocked at all times, even when we came down about 5 minutes before it was due to finish.
Coffee was fantastic and all food freshly cooked and tasty. Waiting Staff were very friendly too, and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Room cleaned every day during our week, and pool / poolside cleaned every night too.

Had a great view across the valley down to Sorrento, particularly good at night across the Bay. One evening there was a wedding reception at the Hotel, but they ensured the guests did not spill outside by the pool, which would have been quite noisy for those trying to sleep, so they get my thumbs up for that too. Also a free minibus to and from Sorrento all day - The 11.30pm bus back to the Hotel is an experience not to be missed, driving up the windy roads of Sorrento in almost pitch Black - lol!!

I cannot praise this Hotel enough, and we WILL be staying there when we visit Sorrento again, hopefully within the next year or so. Book this Hotel and you won’t be disappointed.

Traveller's tip on getting the most out of your stay:
Use this great Hotel as a base for travel to and from Sorrento, and to the Amalfi Coast. Don’t miss Pompeii and Vesuvius, but for us Naples was a bit disappointing - quite dirty in most places, but when we found a "Real" Italian restaurant, I can honestly say we had the best Pizza we have ever tasted.

Take the train from Sorrento to Naples, extremely cheap and clean. Hire a car, and take full damage waiver insurance - you may just need it!!
