“Lovely little hotel, picturesque location!”
Reviewed 18 July 2014

We booked this hotel via Thomson for our honeymoon, and to be honest, after reading a few reviews on here, were a little dubious. However, we had no reason to be, as this hotel is a little gem. Set in the mountains above Sorrento, there is a free shuttle service to and from the hotel hourly, which was very handy indeed. Don't be fooled as we were - you cannot really walk easily to and from Sorrento from this hotel - mainly because of the windy, perilous road, but also because of the distance. We could have walked it, but the bus was far too convenient in the July heat! The decor is crisp and clean - even if a little dated. Our room was extremely clean, had a lovely balcony which overlooked the sea (paid extra for this) and was quite spacious. The bathroom was clean, and it had a hairdryer which was good. The shower door was a little rickety, but to be honest, this didn't bother us that much because everything else was so good! We could only book this hotel on a half board basis, but this proved to be very useful on the nights when we were tired and didn't want to leave the hotel. The food is not excellent, however it's acceptable. The breakfast is a simple continental variety, as you'd expect! However, the evening dinners are quite substantial portion-wise - three course every evening! One of the best things about dinner was Tony, the waiter! He's quite a character and very funny! Look out for him! The pool at this hotel is small, however it's enough considering that it's so small! We never once had to fight for a sun lounger, and there's also a roof terrace with ample loungers available (and once again, a terrific view!) Overall, this hotel is lovely - we would definitely stay here again and I'd say that the hotel's biggest plus point is the view, so be sure to ask for a room with a sea view when booking!

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room with a balcony and sea view

the hotel was clean and staff were pleasant. our room was adequate for the amount of time we were in it , we would have liked a fridge and the although it was welcome the shuttle bus should review it,s times, on the only time we used it there were too many people waiting and it caused bad feeling. i feel with a few changes this could be an outstanding location,

We have just returned back from this hotel which we spent seven days. The Hotel is situated in a quiet location with fabulous views. I was quite surprised how small our bedroom was but as it had a large balcony with stunning views it was fine. This hotel is very clean throughout and the staff are very helpful. It's a great base for exploring the sites such as Capri and Amalfi. We did the hotels trip to Capri which was half the price of Thomas Cook. It was excellent value for money. With regards the the food, it was a bit bland at times but we did enjoy most of the evening meals. Breakfast is continental and it was certainly more than adequate. This hotel is reasonable in price and for what we paid it reached our expectations. The only missing thing I feel this hotel should have is a courtesy room. We arrived at 8.30 pm and had to vacate the room at 10.00 am without any facility for showering etc. we had to change in the toilets. All in all we had a great holiday but I feel the hotel should offer guests this facility. We travelled with Thomas Cook and I have to say the Reps in our resort were excellent but the service on our 6.05 pm flight return on Friiday 11th July was the worst service we have encountered. Considering the flight was less than three hours we did not get our in flight meals or the offer of a drink until two hours into t he flight. They came out with duty free trolley as we were landing into manchester which resulted in many people not having a chance to purchase anything because they ran out of time. Many people on the flight commented on the staff chatting between themselves whilst serving which was totally unprofessional and Thomas Cook need to improve the poor service we received. With regards to the Hotel great value for money but travel with a different airline!

Once you get up the twisty, turny streets of the mountain and open your door to the view of Hotel La Vue D'Or, you'll ooh and ahh at the breathtaking view. We had 3 rooms during our stay for 7 of us - 1 triple and 2 doubles. Each room had an awesome view and we were on different sides of the building. The rest of the stay was okay. There is a free shuttle into town, although the driver isn't very approachable. The complimentary breakfast is okay and we had one dinner there at evening, but didn't really love the food. The front desk is fairly friendly when you ask for recommendations, but we had just come from an awesome little B&B in Rome where they offered to make reservations for us each night, so we were comparing La Vue's staff to this outstanding service so it felt more average. The rooms are nice, but the beds are very hard and the AC and lights won't stay on unless you have your room key in the wall. This meant each night we were pretty uncomfortable waiting for the room to cool down. And this is the only hotel on our 2.5 week, 5-hotel-stay trip where we had to pay for WiFi - very old-school these days :( I'd recommend it if you're looking for an okay experience, but don't expect anything except the view to be exceptional.

Room Tip: Every room has a good view, but the ones on the 3rd floor (with the pool behind you) have the most s...

This seems to really go against the grain of most other reviewers - so much so that I had to recheck Tripadvisor while staying in the hotel to make sure I was in the right place! The first thing to be said is that this is a package holiday hotel which in general is something we try to stay away from but is obviously well liked by many people who travel with Thomas Cook and Monarch.

The room was small and while generally well swept, it wasn't actually cleaned properly in the 4 days we stayed there bar possibly a cursory sweep on the floor. There were also plenty of flies buzzing in reception as well as a poorly kept hotel dog. The rooms are really dated and lack any storage space although the bed was pretty comfortable.

The staff were a really mixed bunch. They got better as the week went on but our first encounters of the hotel staff were of people that wanted to sell us tours. We prefer to travel independently of tour groups and the staff were quite pushy and unhelpful with our questions that would of allowed us to do so. They actually resorted to lying about the waiting time of the blue grotto in an attempt to sell us the tour when they could of given us tips for how to beat the queues. Our later interactions with other staff were more friendly, but as I was consistently blocked in the car park by one of the staff's cars, overall our experience with them was negative.

The transfer service is okay but too infrequent to be really useful unless you just want to use it for going into Sorrento for dinner. The earliest time of departure is 8.30am, which is too late to catch a ferry to Capri which would allow you to beat the crowds to things like the blue grotto. There's also a big gap between return transfers from Sorrento in the evening with one at 9pm and one at 10.30pm. With a pregnant wife, one felt really early to rush from dinner from and the other quite late for her. Overall the service is okay but we would've struggled without our own car and the staff actually recommended we use local buses and our car which felt like a tacit acceptance that the service is pretty average.

The breakfasts are quite basic. I'm really surprised by the comments on how good breakfast was! The 'fresh fruit' was a bowl of unappetising looking apples and oranges and the peaches and pineapples were tinned. The bread was a processed packaged thing which is a little disgraceful in Italy and they kept running out of things. Thank god we never ate dinner there if it's worse than the breakfast.

So the one redeeming feature - the view - and it is amazing at any time of the day. However, this is the amalfi coast and without being complacent that view exists in every bend in the road. So it's great to wake up to but every other aspect of the hotel meant we were rushing away to enjoy that view in nicer and more comfortable surroundings.

Just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel on a Riviera tour. Whilst I agree that the hotel is spotless, the staff very helpful and friendly I can't quite agree with the previous reviewers glowing comments.

The rooms are clean but quite dated. Our original room had a view mainly of a concrete wall but the staff did soon find us a better room. Our only slight gripe was there was a heating oil pipe running over ground below the balcony so there was often a strong waft of diesel. The balcony dividing walls are very low so there is no privacy from your neighbours.

The pool and reception areas are excellent. The dining room decor is also very pleasing.
Can't agree that the breakfast selection was great. The cereals were not great. No hot choice. The continental option was just ham and cheese. Some wonderful fresh Italian tomatoes would make all the difference. Tinned fruit too. Overall quite poor.

Dinner varied. The pasta options were generally very good. The rest was very hit and miss. Overall only average.

The location is good because of the view but quite restrictive for access to Sorrento. The courtesy bus does not run between 12:30 and 5 which is a shame. We caught the local bus back once but apparently the next two did not turn up and some fellow guests were charged 40 euros for the journey so beware! We took the shuttle into Sorrento for our last night and ate at the Foreigners club on the terrace with a table overlooking the bay. Wonderful!

Overall the hotel is very good. A few small changes could make it even better. I think it probably suits the older customer who is content to stay in the hotel every evening and not sample the atmosphere in Sorrento.

Just to say I think the previous comment about the hotel dog were a bit harsh. "Pele" is a stray that adopted the hotel about 14 years ago. He is very arthritic but the hotel feed him every day and bath him when he allows. I think the tick is actually a wart on his nose. He is obviously very content because we saw him sunbathing on the terrace most of the time we were there!

Room Tip: Rooms starting with a 5 should give you a side bay view without the cost of upgrading to a sea view.

My husband and I spent two weeks here at the beginning of June.

La Vue D'or (Golden View) is a family run hotel and this benefits each guest as the personalised touch is given to each and every traveller - whether it be sharing the local knowledge, advice on which trips to take and exactly how to get there - to driving guests down into town with their own cars when the courtesy bus was out of action for one day (yes, just one day, despite what you may have read further down!) Nino drives the courtesy bus and he's a really nice man. He bid us good morning, good day or good night each and every time we got on or off of his bus :)

ALL staff at La Vue D'or are extremely warm, pleasant, efficient, kind and knowledgeable. Nothing was too much trouble for them and if you had a question they were unsure of, they'd disappear to find an answer and come back within minutes with the information requested. Really, what more could you ask for when holidaying overseas??

The hotel is beautifully kept from the bright and spotless reception/bar area through to the terrace and pool area. The gardens are tended to daily (by the big boss, I think, LOL) and also look bright and beautiful. So welcoming as you come up the hill :)

The terraces get a lot of sun - from early morning until at least 5.30pm so sun worshippers will be happy! The pool is great - so chilly when you first dip in but after swimming a length, it's fantastic and just what's needed after the hot, hot sun. There's also a big adults only sun terrace on the next level up. There's a shaded part of the terrace too for those who aren't happy to sit directly in the sun whilst out there. This is where lots of guests were happy to have a drink (hot, cold, soft or alcohol) and something to eat during the day (ordered from the bar).

The dining room just looks so lovely. It's all decorate in creams and blues. It's a pretty big restaurant too! On the whole I did enjoy the food there but on a couple of occasions it wasn't up to par, I thought. Couple of times the portions were very small and I heard a few rumbles from unhappy guests about that. Thursday nights are music nights (and also have a semi-set menu) and a local musician called Vincenzo comes in to play his instrument and sing around the dining room. What a lovely man who appeared to really enjoy himself and enjoy interacting with the guests (came over to our table and he and my mum had a good sing-a-long together!) The waiters, Tony, Bartolo and Dominco (I don't know if I've spelt the last two correctly!) were absolutely charming and lovely. Extremely attentive, fun and made mealtimes a really happy experience.

Breakfast was buffet style and included tea, coffee, various fresh fruit juice, cereal, yoghurts, croissants, cake, toast (various breads) jam, fresh fruit, eggs and meat platters - do people really state there's no breakfast choice? Hahahaha!! You have to laugh, right? They're so caring that they also remembered from a previous visit that my mum is diabetic and put special diabetic/low sugar jam on our table every single morning.

We stayed in a sea view room with a balcony (with furniture). The rooms are quite basic - don't drop the soap in the shower because you'll have to get out to pick it up again as the cubicle is so small! Really good, powerful shower though. Lovely big bed (two pushed together, I think?) A little dressing table, alcove with a curtain across for the wardrobe and a room safe. For me, by far the best room feature was the air conditioning. LOVELY!

We had beautiful views from our room of the Bay of Naples, Vesuvius, down into Sorrento and the mountains - the views go a long, long way! Loved sitting out on the balcony with a drink just soaking up the sun and the gorgeous views. On many an evening we watched firework displays from our balcony that were taking place around the area.

The other benefit of staying at La Vue D'or is being able to stay in Sorrento but come away from the hustle and bustle at the end of the day. It's a ten minute ride away in the courtesy from downtown and that's really special after a long, hot, busy day being a tourist!

To sum up: Wonderful, spotless hotel run and maintained by a welcoming and friendly family. Superb location with stunning views. Lovely dining room with equally lovely food. I highly recommend this hotel to anybody travelling to Sorrento.

Not sure what's going on with that negative review down there because we stayed at the same time as this negative reviewer and our opinions couldn't differ any more!
