“Well-named! The views from this gem of a hotel are spectacular.”
Reviewed 25 September 2009

This lovely reasonably-priced hotel is perched above Sorrento and features the most spectacular views of the sea and beautiful coastline of the area. We loved being away from the noise and bustle of Sorrento, while still having the town fully accessible to us via the hotel's own free shuttle bus. The staff was wonderful. The breakfast was great. Our rooms were small but perfectly clean and well appointed, plus they had nice balconies where we could sit and soak up the vue d'or. There are cozy chairs and sofas in the large lobby, as well as a little bar and the popular gelato bar. Guests gather in the lobby and use it much as we might use a living room. It's a great spot to meet fellow travelers. Internet access is also available in the lobby. Although we only had breakfast in the hotel restaurant, we were told by other travelers that the food was excellent.

This hotel is rather large for our taste with the normal advantages and disadvantages that come along with that.

Traveling back and forth to town required a shuttle ride and there were long periods it was not available. Since we had a private van for touring, the distance from town really was only an issue once or twice. The shuttle ends about 11:30PM so if you want to enjoy the fabulous nightlife, you should stay right in Sorrento.

The pool is beautiful in the hotel pictures but we found it more picturesque than usable since its in the shade it was too cold to use even on the hot days of our early September visit. We also found the restaurant just okay nothing special.

The staff was very warm and friendly except for one young lady. I have no idea why she seemed so annoyed with any question we asked.

We had two rooms. One had a bathtub with shower - my advice change rooms immediately as any time you use the shower the floor floods. We spent four nights trying to avoid this and failed - there are plenty of other rooms as this is a fairly good size hotel.

While we were there, it was very quiet with mostly retirees, so we didn't have a noise problem. I would recommend this hotel if you don’t want to stay late in town and you prefer being a little out of town.

If you want to enjoy the best dining experience we had in two and one half weeks of traveling in Italy. Its here in the Sorrento area. Our driver Carlo took us to Fattoria Terranova (www.fattoriaterranova.it) It is a restaurant/cooking school and also has accommodations available. (We might try the cooking school next time) It is about 20 minutes outside of Sorrento but well worth the effort. Extraordinary experience with superb food. AMAZING.

This hotel is absolutely fabulous. If you want a noisy 18-30 type hotel then steer clear. This in an oasis from the hubub of Sorrento. We wanted a nice relaxing time and that is exactly what we got. Our travel company had e-mailed the hotel to tell them we were on our honeymoon and when we arrived we found a nicely chilled bottle of bubbly in our room. The staff were lovely, all very friendly and the food was fantastic. The pasta dishes were to die for, so light and mouth-watering. Definitely deserves another star.

My wife and I stayed 4 nights in Sept. '09. This is a family run hotel with all the amenities of a "big" hotel. It was up the hill from Sorrento, but the hotel had a shuttle into town and the bus also passed by. If you want to stay away from the chaos of Sorrento, as we did, this was a major plus. The view was great. The hotel restaurant had very good food. The service was 1st class. The people in the hotel were friendly and helpful. My wife and I highly recommend this hotel! We will stay there again when we return to the area.

We had a really relaxing holiday. Booked it last minute so really hadn't done a lot of homework and just hoped it was going to be all we imagined. It was a great location, a little out of sorrento but as it was steaming hot, it was a good place to be with a gentle breeze and absolutely beautiful views over the bay to vesuvius. The shuttle bus was great and extremely punctual. First one 8.30 a.m. and the last back from Sorrento was 11.30 p.m. Our room was a good size with lovely views to the mountains and a side view of the bay. We asked for a quiet room and that is what they gave us. A fridge in the room would have been a bonus but the air con was essential and quiet. Pool is not very large but clean and it was nice having a child free sun terrace up a short flight of steps. Staff were very helpful apart from one surly waiter but hey ho you can't have everything. Would recommend La Fenice restaurant in Sorrento (as you come in on the shuttle bus you will see it on the right hand side at the beginning of town). Great food and if you don't mind sitting waiting a while for your food you will have a great evening. Would definitely go back to this hotel for a quiet holiday.

Fabulous, relaxing holiday spent here, and I absolutely echo the previous positive views about the hotel. Rather than repeat the praise, let me try to use this review to add a few little snippets of La Vue D'Or trivia that might be useful!

If you are an independent traveller (with a smaller wheelie bag!), it can be simple to transfer from Naples airport to the door of the hotel for just 10 euros each. First by bus from the airport to Sorrento , then by free hotel shuttle bus. The hotel will email you with shuttle bus timetable and directions to the pick-up point (essential!!)), if you request. La Vue D'Or bus is white with the hotel name on the side! Very punctual. Depends on flight times obviously, but will save a lot of money and is easily do-able.

Pool towels are available to hire for 2 euros daily. Internet access 4 euros per hour/7 euros per day, computer in foyer. Not sure about wi fi.

Hairdryer is 2000watt and powerful and can be moved from the bathroom to the bedroom, but if you doing a proper blow-dry, it is one of those that you need to hold the button down on all the time.

It's a good idea to check the details of your food and drinks tab every few days if applicable. (You can get an itemised print-out with dates of purchases) With the best will in the world, their system can have an occasional blip and these are much easier to resolve as you go along, rather than trying to remember what you had after a fortnight.

Rooms are lovely, bright and comfortable and good pillows. Room-safe and quiet efficient air con included, no fridge though. A little lacking in few extras which wouldn't cost much but would be nice IMO...no pen or stationery, no glasses just white plastic beakers, no folder of info in the room and only very basic soap and shower gel sachets. Spotlesssly clean. The hotel as a whole is immaculately-kept.

Although just B&B, I was late arriving and had dinner at the hotel on the first night (from 7pm, last orders by 9pm). 2 courses 19 euros, 3 courses 26 euros. When in my room I did drink the tap water and used it to fill up my water bottle for trips as did a couple of other people staying I spoke to and it was fine, no problems at all.

Pool area is delightful and beautifully kept , lots of loungers, stylish deck chairs and tables and chairs in the sun and shade. There is a very quiet upper level sunbathing area for adult use only which catches the sun right through the day and early evening. Fab views.

A very friendly welcoming hotel. Lots of English folk , but quite a few Italians and other nationalities too, and a mix of ages which is always nice. Arriving to the heat, noise hustle and bustle of Sorrento, I found the Vue D'Or a little oasis to escape to. The views, fresh air and peace and quiet on the hillside refreshing to mind and body!

Stayed in La Vue d’Or for 2 nights on the way to Capri. The hotel is located on the hill high above Sorrento. This location means the views are breathtaking – to the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius, but it also means the hotel is far away from the city. We took a taxi from the central train station of Sorrento, which cost over 30 Euro for a 10 min ride. There is a free hotel shuttle bus, though it doesn’t run too often (about once per hour). You can take a bus to/from the city, which is much cheaper than a taxi, tickets are available at the reception. The bus stop is just outside the hotel.
Overall the hotel is a good value for money, not too bad for a 3-star Italian hotel. The room we had was simple, with a little balcony with a sea view. Amenities are very modest: small wardrobe, old TV, a little desk, one chair. Bathroom is typical for European hotels: inconvenient shower in the bath, spraying water on the floor, tiny sink, no space to put toiletries, almost no bath supplies - sad little shampoo sachets and that’s it. Hairdryer is good though. One evening we had power outage, not for long though, about 10 min. Seems to be a normal thing in this area in August – same happened to us on Capril, when the whole island didn’t have electricity for the evening and most of the night. In general hotel is quite quiet as it is far from the city and there is nothing close to it, however the doors are poorly adjusted so we heard all the noises from the corridor.
The room and the bathroom were clean, as well as other areas of the hotel in general. The staff was very friendly and helpful, spoke English, French and Italian. Breakfast is again on the modest side: cheese, ham, muesli and cereal, yoghurt, tea and coffee, nothing hot, no eggs, same things everyday. The waiters at the breakfast were looking tired and annoyed with the guests. Breakfast is included in the room price.
The hotel has a swimming pool and a large terrace overlooking the bay of Naples. There is also a bar at the lobby, plus the restaurant is open in the evening for a set menu dinner. There are not too many restaurants close to the hotel, so either eat in town or order your evening meal at the hotel.
One handy thing about the hotel location is that the bus to Amalfi coast stops right outside the hotel, you don’t need to go to town. The reception can help with timetables of all sorts, including ferries to Capri or Naples.
Sorrento itself is a pretty little town, it’s location is amazing. There is not that much to see in the town itself, but there are great attractions close by. We went to see Pompeii which is 30 min by train (3.70 Euro return), Herculanum is also close, Amalfi coast is 1 hour away by bus or by boat.
