Hotel Residence Le Terrazze
Ranked #50 of 100 Hotels in Sorrento

Reviewed 2 August 2014

The hotel is not easy to find if you drive there not knowing the area. Once you get there you get the warmest welcome we've had in a long while.
The hotel offers dramatic views over Sorrento and, further away, mount Vesuvius.
We had a family room which just about big enough for the 4 of us. The very negative point is the constant smell of damp in the rooms. It can become very overwelming.
The breakfast is amazing, everything is fresh and it all comes with a bright smile!

Reading all the reviews all i can do is repeat what everyone else already said. Great Views fantasic staff and nice rooms. The only down side is the not being in the center of Sorrento but having a glass of wine on your balcony overlooking the bay at the end of your day made it worth the bus rides.

First the positives:
1. excellent view across the bay to Vesuvius and over Sorrento.
2. staff very friendly and helpful.
3. beds comfortable.
4. easy to bypass Sorrento when travelling towards Naples (Sorrento traffic is a nightmare).

Now the negatives:
1. insufficient parking for the number of guests. They always managed to fit our car in somewhere, but we were wondering whether there would be a space every time we went out.
2. the rooms/cupboards smelt of mustiness and there was often a smell of sewage when we opened the window. Air conditioning wasn't 100% effective either.
3. serious mosquito problem - dealt with by spray when we discovered it.
4. no food available in the evening. They will bring in food from a nearbyt supply if you ask, but the only choice is bruscheta.
5. wifi only available outside or in the breakfast area.
6. surrounding area in front of the hôtels not landscaped.

In summary, this is an apartotel with very limited facilities. It could be so much better with a bit of tender loving care. You can probably get better elsewhere as all hôtels in this area have an excellent view.

Room Tip: I suggest you ask for a room higher up if possible.

We were here from 7th to 14th June 2014 and really enjoyed our stay. The property is a 15 minute bus ride into town and there are regular buses to Sorrento and Almafi coast from just outside the door. Views over Sorrento and Naples Bay are amazing. The staff could not be more helpful and responsive to their customers needs. Breakfast is good and plentiful. If you are a couple suggest you try and book rooms 3, 4, 5 or 6 as they have balconies with great views.

We chose this place mainly as it offered accomodation in the Sorrento area at reasonable price; our overall experience has been very good, in particular the staff at the Hotel have been very helpful.

The highlight of the place must be the view - pretty much every room (more like an appartment really, we had two bedrooms and kitchen) has an outside sitting area with views to die for.

The rooms themselves as well as kitchen and bathroom are a bit dated, but the air conditioning worked well and we slept really good. The pool is well maintained and a nice way to cool down in the afternoon.

Breakfast is nice, with a lot of handmade options (cakes etc.); not a superb breakfast buffet but definitely ok.

One issue for us has been transport - that's not the Hotel's fault, more a general issue with unreliable public transport in Italy. The hotel is on the bus line from Sorrento to Positano, so it should be as easy as jumping on a bus that says "AMALFI" on the front right outside the entrance to the Hotel. On the day we tried to do this 3 scheduled buses simply did not come, and after having waited almost an hour we took the next bus, which went the opposite way down to Sorrento, and ended up hiring a car there. Having the car was great as it gave us independence at a cost of roughly EUR 50 / day; and the Car Rental Agency (Autoservici De Martino, Ph. +390818782801, Via Parsano in Sorrento, about 5 minutes walk from the Train Station) was good. Expect to pay quite a bit extra for petrol though; we ended up with a EUR 35 petrol bill for two days.

One unexpected issue with having the car on the Amalfi cost was that it is nearly impossible to get parking there (if you've never been there, it's a bit of an adventure to drive those roads with buses coming at you...); we ended up driving through Positano and Amalfi and parked the car in Ravello for a stroll around. There is some little beachside villages on the way as well and we spent and hour in one of them; the parking spots marked with a blue line require payment and you'l usually find someone in the village that sells the tickets (look near a tobacco shop).

To get to the Hotel by bus from Sorrento train station look for a bus that says "Nastro Verde" or "Amalfi via Nastro Verde" on it; they leave outside the Circumvesuvio train station, not directly outside but you have to walk down the road for about 50m to the SITA stop. The bus ticket is EUR 1.10.

We arrived by ferry from Naples, definitely nicer than the train which can be very hot & sweaty depending on the weather. The ferry (Metro di Mare) costs us EUR 12.30 + EUR 2 for each large piece of luggage; the train ride is only EUR 4.20.

One last thing about Le Terrazze which we loved: The little village just above Le Terrazze, Sant' Agatha, has some really nice restaurants, and while you can take the bus, it is really easy to get to by foot. As you exit the Le Terrazze, simply cross the road and walk up the driveway just opposite; walk to the very end of the driveway and you will see a path to the left; it goes through bush for about 250m and then clears and within 10 minutes you are in the outskirts of Sant' Agatha, coming in from behind the church and walking past Mr Gregory's pizza. It is an easy walk and spectacular at night as we encountered coming back from dining out there as the path was humming with fireflies that illumiinated it for us and provided a beautiful spectacle (still taking a torch is not a bad idea).

Room Tip: Make sure you get an ocean view; I think all of the rooms have it but it doesn't hurt to ask for...

This is a wonderful hotel away from the tourists of Sorrento. The staff here are wonderful and very Edgar to please. This is a family run hotel (Antonio and son Alberto) with wonderful rooms and even better views and even better staff! Don't be frightened on the way up here as it is a hairy bus ride @ 1.10 euro per person or 35+ euro cab ride (the bus is the way to go for experience alone as it does stop right in front of the hotel. Just tell the bus driver on line "c" bus out of Sorrento as they all seem to know the stop). If you need you can request the kitchenette and it is helpful if you are there for some days as the true Italian village of Sant'agata is only a short walk away(300-400 meters up the road and then down some stairs and another 100-150 meters up the walking path). We would go to town almost daily for lunch at Buenos Aires outdoor restaurant which had wonderful mid day pizza and great prices on wine and beer but you could also shop here at the daily fish market and the fruit and vegetable stores or trucks on the street for everything you would want. This hotel has such a wonderful included breakfast that you might be able to convert to two meals a day as they also have connections to restaurants that will pick-up and drop off at the hotel. ( best we visited was ville caprile ). The most fun I had at this hotel is meeting all the people coming in on the upper open deck where the staff would be happy to sell you a glass of wine or a bottle of theirs at very reasonable prices or the odd time on the house (thanks Alberto). This is a great hotel and I will be back.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a kitchenette and a view but don't complain about the stairs as we all need the...

Hotel Residence Le Terrazze and Hotel Villa Fiorita are two hotels that share a wide building, and if they weren't separated by a different color of paint, it wouldn't even occur to you while staying there.
We stayed at both hotels, and though both were good in each way, I would book one in front of the other. You should read both my reviews to pick the one that suits your needs best.

Hotel Residence Le Terrazze is all white, and you can almost feel the greek atmosphere, while Hotel Villa Fiorita feels like a olde british town house - in a good way.

NOTICE:

Both hotels are situated approximately 8 km from Sorrento. Reviewers complaining about the distance should only blame themselves and need to have their eyes checked. Contact me, I know a good optician.
ALWAYS check the map, no matter what review a hotel has - It doesn't matter if you are in Rome or Sorrento. I would recommend having a car if you would like to stay at one of these hotels.

Positive:

- Own parking area.
- Amazing, bright and clean terrazze with a astonishing view.
- Flawless and bright dining area with big windows and a great view.
- The best breakfast and selection I have had ever. They even had high-fibre bread.
- Rooms with great views, if you get the right ones. 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, 10
- Great pool area (which they share with Hotel Villa Fiorita)

Negative:

- Avoid room nr. 8 (no terrazze) and nr. 9, which has no view and is located by the trees and therefore is a nice area for the mosquito. Nr. 16 is a big appartment close to the pool, but the view is blocked by a wall.

Tip: Drive uphill for the small supermarkets. Drive (or take a long walk) downhill to get to the local restaurant; Ristorante Il Borgo - for the moment ranked as 28 out of 220 restaurants. Good food and good prices, but the service wasn't worth mentioning. Give it a try!
