Villa Oriana Relais
Ranked #3 of 100 Hotels in Sorrento
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 25 May 2008

I have stayed numerous times at the Villa Oriana Relais and have had the greatest of treatment each and every time. The proprietor family (Maria and Giuseppe, and their son who manages things, Pasquale) are generous and attentive to detail. The breakfasts and hospitality are to die for and now are famous with many of my friends the world over, not to mention the incredible views over the Gulf of Naples.

There has been an instance when I have had to relocate over the years due to a problem with plumbing, but the "substitute" property was truly 4-star and an excellent experience, even being able to join the family for their famous breakfast the next morning.

On one stay, there was room in the Villa for one night but needed to relocate the second night (this was foreseen and agreed to previously, though) to Sorrento Town Suites, who also had a wonderful staff and excellent, well-kept and newly-renovated rooms with a spectacular view from mine. The breakfast was not much to speak of down at the local English Inn, however my understanding is that they now have their own breakfast, according to their website.

All in all, I would recommend it to anyone. The family, the hospitality, and the stay are most enjoyable and a rare gem in the often confused but lovely Sorrento area.

Sorrento is an exciting, bustling town full of cars and motorcycles and the stink from all of them. But perched up on a hill away from the smell of exhaust sits Villa Oriana Relais. My husband and I stayed at Villa Oriana Relais from April 21st through April 24th, 2008 as part of our 2 week honeymoon in Italy, and we could not have been happier. We caught a taxi from the Circumvesuviana train station, and the driver took us up this hill to what looked like a simple private citrus grove. Then we see the gorgeous house come into sight. Upon arrival, we were treated to homemade lemonade and sat on the deck behind the hotel and marvelled at the beautiful view of the Golf of Salerno and Mount Vesuvius. The staff was so very helpful and sweet! Our room was lovely with a little patio off the side with it's own private gate. It was very very clean and fresh, and the bathroom was enormous! The hotel can arrange dinner reservations and taxi rides for you, and take their dinner suggestions; they were excellent! My husband had his favorite meal in 2 weeks of Italy travel there. Every morning we were treated to fresh homemade breakfast by Maria, the sweet wonderful woman who along with her family runs the hotel. Lemon cake, breakfast quiche, and chocolate melba cake along with the fresh squeezed orange juice are some highlights. The breakfast room shares the same view as the patio and was the most stunning place to start our day. Maria was so sweet and made the rounds to all the tables, wishing them a wonderful day. She even knew that we were on our honeymoon and wished us nothing but wonderful memories. You can tell she really loves her job taking care of her guests. We pretty much walked everywhere, which was exciting! The walk into town is about 15 to 20 minutes. Cabs are highly accessible for those not wanting to walk. On our last day, Maria drove us down to the train station. She gave us lots of hugs and good wishes and said she hoped to see us on one of our anniversaries. We would go back there in a heartbeat!, and tell all of our friends and family to do the same. Thanks to Maria and all of the staff for a few wonderful days!!!

I cannot say enough good about Villa Oriana B&B. Outstanding accomodations, picture post card views, an excellent breakfast served with a panaromic view of Sorrento with Naples and Vesuivis as a backdrop, and a host, a 5-star hotel would be proud of. No, I'm not related to, nor the owner of this charming B&B. Maria (the owner), and her very helpful staff provided us with dining recomendations, tour advice and shuttle service to and from the rail station. She even shared her recipe for one of the many great cakes she serves at Villa Oriana. Given the beauty of the Sorrento-Amalfi coast, Maria, Guiseppe, and Pasquale were able to make our stay in Sorrento even more memorable. No question, I will "Return to Sorrento", and I will be staying at Villa Oriana Relais.

Overlooking the Bay of Naples is the most wonderful B&B, the Villa Oriana. From the moment you enter through the black gate you are enthralled by the lemon and orange trees that line the driveway leading to the house. We were fortunate that the trees were in full fruit when we visited at the beginning of April 2008.
On arrival we were welcomed warmly and were refreshed by freshly squeezed lemonade. The rooms are clean and modern. Ours was on the lower level and our french doors opened onto a cool quiet terrace that would be a wonderful retreat in the heat of the summer.
The house is in an orchard and being on a hill is high enough that no other homes obscure its’ view and the room in which breakfast is served shares this view. This is further enhanced by the fact that the quests have access to the wrap around terrace on the first floor but also to the rooftop terrace where there is a 360 degree view showing you Naples across the bay, Mount Vesuvius, Sorrento and the islands in the bay. It is very hard not to just stay put, but exploring the town of Sorrento and the Amalfi coast is well worth the effort.
The B&B is run by Maria, a most welcoming and passionate person who loves her property which has been in her family for generations. She greets all her quests with warmth and enjoys talking about her piece of heaven.
Eating the breakfast is an event not a function. The jams and honey are made from the produce on the property, the orange juice is freshly squeezed and the cakes are freshly baked each morning. The buns and fresh tomatoes with oil and fresh basil and mozzarella cheese were to die for. The coffee is hot delicious and plentiful. If tea or hot chocolate is your preference that too is offered.
As the last few days of our trip to Italy were in Sorrento we could not have found a more wonderful place to stay.
As the song says, we too will Return to Sorrento!

My family of six were ending our two week vacation in Sorrento and we chose the Villa Oriana based on the beautiful views, positive reviews, and quiet ambiance. However we did not get to stay at the Villa since after arriving at 5:00pm from a 6 hour drive, we were told that our rooms were still under construction. Are You Kidding Me?

We were told that the proprietor was finding us other 4 star accommodations and we proceeded to be shown our new hotel. Disappointing does not even begin to describe the hotel we were directed to, Hotel Centrale. It right on the busy Corso, limited views, stains on the rugs, furniture was plasterboard, smelled intensely of smoke, small rooms and horrible breakfast. We had prepaid for 2 suites with a view and one double at the Villa Oriana and now we were stuck in a nightmare.

The next morning my mother-in-law woke up feeling incredibly sick and I felt like a brick hit me in the head. We called Pasquale and explained the situation, we could not stay another night in this so-called 4 star hotel. He then transferred us yet again to another hotel, Villa Garden. This hotel was beautiful with clean smelling rooms, a view, and lovely breakfast, However we wasted half the day having to meet with Pasquale and move the family over to the new hotel.

Why didn't the Villa Oriana have our rooms, and why were we initially moved to horrible accommodations?

During our 2 week stay in Italy this past March, Villa Oriana was
our favorite B&B. It is a beautiful home with a very friendly atmosphere. Upon enterring the property from a secure gated entry, you walk through their lemon/orange groves. Our room was great with marble floors, antique furnishings and a state of the art bathroom with sunken tub, shower, toilet, bidet and double sink vanity. Off our bedroom was a semi-private balcony with a
great view of the Bay of Naples/Pompeii. We also had access to
tthe top of the house with a full deck and hottub in the summer.
All areas were very spacious. Maria and Orella were always available and were wonderful. Our breakfasts were amazing with fresh baked goods, daily fresh mozzarella cheese and tomatoes, meats, eggs, fresh orange jc from their groves, etc. They were very helpful with all and even recommended a restaurant who would pick us up and return us for supper. The villa is up a steep hill-a taxi is needed if you have luggage-Maria gave us ride to the train station when we left. The only drawback was that marble floors do carry sound and it was a bit noisy at night-we tend to be early to bed. We highly recommend ths B&B and would love to go back.

We have just returned from a holiday around the world, and I would have to say that our stay at Villa Oriana Relais was one of the best places we have stayed in.

The rooms were very clean, airy, and spacious. The view was breathtaking, and the breakfast was delicious.

Maria and her family made us more than welcome, and gave us information on the area which was very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for Maria and she certainly made our stay a memorable and happy one.

We would not hesitate in recommending Villa Oriana to anyone, and look forward to returnning there one day.
