“wonderful holiday in beautiful hotel”
Reviewed 15 June 2014

I enjoyed a fantastic two week holiday in this beautiful hotel in May, the staff at The Capodimonte are the jewel in the crown of this hotel which in my opinion should be 5 star rated. This was my first visit to The Capodimonte but I hope will not be my last. My room on the 4th floor was immaculately clean and serviced daily by wonderfully friendly staff, the food in the two beautifully appointed restaurants was first class and served by experienced and welcoming staff. So thank you Capodimonte and hope to see you again soon.

We have just returned from a wonderful week in Sorrento and the Hotel Capodimonte. We booked a premier sea view room and we had a room on the 6th floor - the views over the bay of Naples are amazing, and we are glad we paid the extra for the sea view. The room was fairly large and was exceptionally clean. The room had lovely traditional furniture and a beautiful tiled bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and there is a choice of pillows. The room was cleaned every day. The highlight for us was the pool area, it really is delightful. The pool attendant is lovely and provides you with a towel each day - a nice touch and great that you don't need to pack pool towels. The pool area is spotless and there are plenty of quiet areas and terraces, and lots umbrellas provided for shade. There is a nice restaurant by the pool where you can have lunch which we did on several occasions. All the staff at this hotel are very friendly and helpful and nothing seemed to be too much trouble.

We enjoyed the breakfast each morning - there was plenty of choice, and the egg chef was a great addition. My husband had a freshly cooked omelette every morning and said it was delicious. Dinner is waiter service and there is plenty of choice, I particularly enjoyed the risottos which were superb. There is a good selection of reasonably priced bottles of wine, and the staff were always helpful in their recommendations. We also ate out in Sorrento on a couple of evenings - there is a great selection of restaurants and the hotel give you the option to swap dinner to lunch by the pool.
We will definately return to this hotel - it really is a gem. We have stayed in many hotels around the world and all hotel rooms start to look the same, but the Capodimonte is the exception and has retained a certain charm and elegance that is hard to find these days.

Room Tip: It is worth paying the extra for a sea view room. There is also a block near the pool area and the...

This is not usually my favorite kind of hotel. It's big and kind of formal, but the people who work here are really nice and helpful and it gets you past the look of the place. The location of the hotel is great. It's about 1/4 mile outside of town. It's an easy walk to town. There are numerous supermarket type stores around to get whatever supplies you might need. They have parking lot if you arrive by car, as we did. They will park it for you or you can do it yourself (19 Euro/night).

Because the hotel is set into the hillside, everything is multileveled. It's an elevator ride from the front entrance to the lobby, which is spotless and beautiful. The fact that the very attractive lounge off the lobby is always empty bespeaks a bit of the lack of warmth. It's like one of those "keep your feet off the furniture" kinds of living rooms that nobody ever sits in.

Off the lobby, there are two sets of elevators which take you to the guest rooms. One of those elevators, the one that goes to the pool and the less formal restaurant, is reached through a long, sloping yellow hallway that looks ideal for a skateboard race.

We had a premier sea view room. You don't need one of these rooms to get great views here. You can get them at the pool or at any of the restaurants or bars, but it's very nice to have. The room was large and comfortable, with a pretty tiled floor.

Breakfast is served in a huge restaurant space. The food is good and plentiful. Again, it looks formal, but not in an overbearing way. The maitre d' in the tux will seat you even if you're wearing athletic gear. We left for the airport before breakfast started and they made us a "packaged breakfast." Very nice and thoughtful. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel but the lunch at the pool grill was delicious.

The pool is to die for. Clear, clean water, multitiered, plenty of lounge space, drink service and a million dollar view. Great great great.

The people at the hotel were very helpful in every way. We accidentally left a wallet in the hotel safe when we departed. Housekeeping retrieved it within 3 minutes after I called to report it (try that at a Marriott) and the front desk staff arranged for a courier, cleverly paid him with the cash in the wallet, which they were not permitted to ship, and kept in contact with me to help me track the package. It could not have been handled better from my perspective.

Really the only inconvenient thing about the place it that it's one of those older European hotels that have the big heavy keys you're supposed to leave at the front desk. But everything here is very modern (the rooms are bright and nicely updated), so you have to plug the key in to put the power on. So when I wanted to go for a walk while my wife was still sleeping, I had to leave the key in case she might want to, for example, turn the bathroom light on while I'm gone, so I had to have housekeeping let me back in. There ought to be a better way. Also, if you get a voucher when you make your reservation, make sure you print it and bring it with you. They were unable to find or retrieve mine, which cost me 80 Euros.

But overall, we had a terrific stay and would happily stay there again.

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for taking the time to write such a detailed and nice review regarding your stay at our hotel.

We are glad that you were able to overcome the initial feeling and appreciated the style and décor of our establishment, also thanks to our efficient and friendly staff.

The view from our premier rooms and the pool is indeed stunning however, as you kindly noted, we have lots of terraces and public areas from which you can enjoy the view.

The package breakfast is a nice touch we arrange for people leaving early; we’re happy you appreciated it.

Lastly, we will treasure your remarks regarding the keys,as for the voucher unfortunately as stated on the voucher itself and on the website, in order to get the deduction you have to present the voucher on check out.

Anyway thank you very much for all your kind words, we hope to welcome you again as soon as possible.

Best regards

I have stayed at this hotel several times over the past 10 years and I enjoy it more every time. It is in a perfect location, within walking distance of Sorrento town and has stunning views across the bay to Vesuvius. It is always immaculately clean, the food is excellent and the staff are genuinely friendly and helpful. The gardens are kept beautifully and the pool area is stunning. I absolutely love it and intend to come back again next year!!

We booked this hotel on the strength of the reviews and also as it had a 4 star rating (they must award this themselves) and an expensive price tag we thought we were getting a top drawer hotel. Oh how misleading! Our room, partial sea view no 515, (photo attached) should be more likely described as town view with wall and a bit of the sea. We asked to move rooms. We were told by a no-nonsense Marta, that we had booked a partial sea view and they had nothing else. I also asked for a high floor. She told me we had one as it was on level 7 (???). She could understand when I said I wanted higher. The room was standard and had all you require, except for coffee/tea making facilities, which I understand isn't the norm in this part of the world. Marta eventually showed us another room. It was in a different section of the hotel and a long way from the main part of the hotel. This was in a far corner and smelt strongly of damp. I am sure that she knew we would not accept this room and went through the motions of showing it to us. Basically like it or lump it. We were shown nothing else. It would have been nice to meet Giuseppe M, Direttore General of the hotel, who always seems to reply to these reviews but doesn't have the courage to meet disgruntled guests face to face. The room problem was never resolved and it was not cheap at near enough £200 per night B&B.
We thought we would have a relaxing lunch by the pool. How nice it would have been to be greeted by friendly bar staff. The food matched their mood. Photo attached of my tuna and tomato sandwich. Remember that this is supposedly 4 star. I showed this photo to reception staff for their opinion. Their answer - its a sandwich and shrugged their shoulders. On another occasion whilst by the pool I ordered a drink, which you have to sign for before receiving!!! which never turned up - disgraceful!
Breakfast - scrum down and fight for everything. Queue for toaster, queue for chef to cook eggs. Why not put two chefs on at busy times. The layout was completely nonsense. Food all over the dining room so guests were bumping into each other going from one end to the other. All the waiters did was clear tables and fill the stations (slowly). It would have been so nice for them to at least get you your tea or coffee!
Dinner - we didn't dine here except for one night when we had the Gala Dinner. At 40 euros a head excluding drinks, the most expensive meal we had in Sorrento. I cannot understand why people go half board. There are so many great restaurants within walking distance and much more reasonable. Why do hotels like this overcharge for their services?
Entertainment - photo attached of what was on offer - enough said!
A couple of positives. I liked the fact that there is free wifi. The views from pool area are amazing. We got clean towels to our room most nights. The hotel were good at booking restaurants for us

In summary. This hotel is dated (still has a bulky key operating system to bedrooms) its entertainment fit for a holiday camp, staff who don't care for someone with a complaint, overpriced, and uncaring - they have your money.

Sorrento is top class - this hotel isn't

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for your valuable comments on Trip Advisor. We do our job with love and commitment, so that our customers can always enjoy a wonderful holiday with us. We try to satisfy our guests in every aspect and the reviews we receive help us to improve always our service as to be rewarded as one of the best hotels in Sorrento.

We are very happy to hear that you enjoyed our beautiful swimming pools with its stunning views over the bay of Naples and the many amenities we give to our customers, such as free WI-FI connection in all common areas and rooms or our always careful attention of cleaning the rooms and the daily change of bed linen and towels.

Concerning the room you have received we are sorry to hear that you didn’t enjoyed it.
Room 515 is a lovely bright and spacious rooms with side sea view and also over the beautiful town of Sorrento, as your reservation, and is situated on the high floors of the hotel on the seventh floor from the street level. However, even if we were fully booked, Marta has shown you another room, the same typology with partial sea view on an even higher floor which was the ninth to try to please you, but also this room was not appreciated. All our rooms are bright, spacious and equipped with all modern comforts and we never received any complaints about dump’s smell.

Our breakfast is served in the main restaurant and in the contiguous terrace where you can enjoy a wonderful view. We have multiple workstations for the food that are organized according to type of food, bread, salt food or sweet, cereals, eggs, etc ... All this in order to avoid queues and waits. We also have two chefs for eggs, as you suggested and all customers appreciate our extensive hot and cold buffet breakfast as for the quantity and as for the quality of products.

Concerning our candle light gala dinner we do not believe it is expensive as we offer a fine dining with a four-course menu with refined dishes, as for example lobster, and you can enjoy an hors d'oeuvre, a starter, a main course and dessert with coffee and pastries included. This dinner is served on a beautiful terrace overlooking the sea and all over the Sorrento bay.
About the room’s key, that you have defined bulky, we want to emphasize the traditions of our hospitality in order to have more contact with our customers.

Also your opinion on entertainment surprised us, we offer several evenings with live music during the week, including a themed evening, the Sorrentinean soiree and the candle light dinner with piano and violin.
All our staff is praised by many positive comments on Trip Advisor for the kindness, professionalism and always ready to help with a smile.

About the reply to the reviews, it does not mean that the management is not favourably disposed to talk to our guests concerning all kind of problems or opinions but, we believe, it is a positive characteristic of our hotel, it points out our attention to customers as we take care of our guests not only during their stay but even after!

We hope to welcome you soon again at the Grand Hotel Capodimonte, as to have the opportunity to give you good memories of us.

Best regards

This was a repeat visit to this hotel and it was even better than on previous trips. The hotel is beautifully situated with fantastic views over the Bay of Naples and is a really lovely building with good sized well decorated bedrooms and lots of good public areas. The pool and gardens are a real joy to spend time in. We've always said that the staff are a fantastic asset to the hotel and without exception are welcoming helpful and informative - nothing is too much trouble for them. The restaurant menu has been upgraded since our last visit and has a large and imaginative choice for all courses. The food has always been good but it is now a great selling point for the hotel. Lunch at the poolside bar is a great treat both for the food and the view. An evening spent in the bar, which has the best head barman ever, is a great way to wind down after a hard day looking round a lovely part of Italy

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a higher floor as some lower floors have restricted views.
