Myself and my wife thought this hotel was excellent and generaly, the service was very good. You do need to pay extra for a room with a view as the front of the hotel has lovely views, but the back looks into a cliff face. The breakfast is great with lots of fresh fruit, cereals, and a chef cooking omelettes to order. The facilities are excellent and the hotel is worth the 4 stars. It is not far from the centre (10 minutes) and is the first hotel on the way up a hill. Very enjoyable

This hotel is great! Splurge and get a higher-end room with a balcony and a view of the Bay of Naples and the town of Sorrento. Well worth the money to wake up each morning to this view! The hotel is in a cliff and offers great views as well as wonderful terraced pools. It's a 5 minute walk to town and we enjoyed walking off dinner in Sorrento, back to the hotel each night. The floors are all tiled and beautiful but the only drawback is because there is no carpeting; only tiled floors, it can be a bit noisy. We were on the 10th floor with one floor above us and we could hear chairs being dragged above us in the mornings. Not a big deal but something that should be noted. If you're a light sleeper or want to sleep in a lot, this may bother you. It didn't bother us as we were up early every day to explore the coast. If I were to go back to Sorrento, I would definitely stay here again.

Just returned on Friday 14th August from a two week stay, the hotel is in a great position with great views,if you happen to have a room looking over the bay.We stayed in room 702 the room was ok,have stayed in better, the good thing about the room was it was nice and quiet and when you closed the electronic shutters of a night it was pitch black, great for sleaping.Balcony overlooked the bay the only problem was that the balcony wall was made of concrete and was very high so as you sat at the table you could not see the view, the pool area is great the five cascading pools, and terrace area are great for relaxing.Pity you still get the usual people who soon as the pool opens at 9am put thier towels out then go to breakfast, they think this is where i sit and no one else can have this spot.Breakfast was realy nice plenty of choice hot and cold.Dinner you had a choice of about 6 starters, mains, and desserts, food was ok,service varied, one night waited 35mins for starters.you have to ask for pepper or parmezan cheese as it is never offered.Sorrento is very expensive so take plenty of cash,we used to sit outside the wine bar in the mane street and watch the locals walk up and down in thier best gear.We did a few of the trips with Thomas Cook a half day trip to the volcano, and a half day trip to pompei, the coach takes you to vezuvious and drops you about thirty minutes from the summit make sure you have sturdy shoes.trip to pompei does not include admission price that is another 11 euros. We also did the trip to Capri 64 euros each, chair lift to the summit is another 8 euros each but great fun,the boat trip around Capri is another 13 euros. On One of the days we thought we would spend the day on one of the lidos on Sorrentos front, 26 euros for two sun beds and umbrella.Dont let the cost put you off it is a nice hotel in a great location you could easily spend the holiday around the pool relaxing. One other point our bathroom supplies would very rarely be renewed i dont know if the maid was taking them home, and to use the safe in the room is another 3.5 euros a day.

We stayed for two weeks and had a truly marvelous holiday. The hotel is in a wonderful location which is very hard to beat. Quiet and set back from the road, but within easy walking distance to the historic district of the town.
The pool is fantastic with plenty of sunbeds and plenty of shady spots too.
The staff in the hotel were all polite and friendly, the food excellent and although the drinks are expensive, they are expensive wherever you buy them in Italy!
Would go again in a flash!

Me my wife and my 3 year old daughter stayed in the Grand Hotel Capodimonte as we were getting married in Sorrento. Sorrento was the perfect place to get married and the Thomson wedding rep was excellent and organised everything perfectly. The hotel was only a 5 minute walk from the town and as it was set into the cliffs and had stunning views over Sorrento and the sea. The hotel pool was lovely with great views and my daughter really enjoyed playing in it. The food on the evening was a bit varied, although there was a large selection for each course. Service was also varied, one night we were served our mains as my wife was still eating her starter and on other nights it took a long time between course and to serve drinks we had ordered. This meant my daughter was getting restless during the meals and I would suggest if going with young children and staying half board to swap evening meal to lunch time meal which we were able to do. Breakfast was very nice and with a large selection. The staff were very nice and helpful. We visited Pompeii through Thomsons which seemed over priced as price didn't include addmisson to pompeii (and we then heard other people had caught the train which was easy enough), Pompeii was well worth doing but not for children as it was very hot and not much shade (we were lucky enough for one of my relatives to look after my daughter). We also visited Capri which was beautiful, which we organised ourselves, this was easy to do. The food in Sorrento was lovely but expensive and drinks were very expensive (alcholic and non-alcholic). I would strongly recommend the hotel and we will hopefully go again.

We stayed at Grand Hotel Capodimonte from the 17th to the 31st July and every minute was special.
The staff

From the moment we arrived, the staff were courteous and helpful. From Roberta on the reception desk greeting us with the biggest smile, to Giuseppe the reservations manager (who deserves a special mention later), Vincenzo the head waiter in the restaurant who was excellent and very efficient and Mariano, who worked in the bars with his wicked sense of humour. All staff deserve credit!

The room

We asked for a sea view and were not disappointed. The view from room 618 was breathtaking. By the time we had gone to breakfast and come back to the room it was more often than not clean and made up by the chambermaid. It was lovely to come to a clean room with fresh linen every day.

The food

Breakfast was a very extensive buffet, from fresh fruits and yogurt, pastries and breads to hot food with eggs cooked to order by a very smiley jovial chef (even after 300 egg orders!)

We swapped our half board dinner option for lunch on occasion and were not disappointed. We were able to sit and have a long and leisurely three course lunch in the relaxed and very pretty grill bar overlooking the pools and the bay. Again there was a very good choice on the menu.

Dinner was a three course a la carte meal every evening with a range of choices for every taste. The pasta was to die for with fresh sauces and fillings. The gala buffet took place once a week, usually on a Wednesday and was fantastic, we would recommend getting there for 7pm on the dot as it is very popular!

Wedding reception

After 10 days into our stay we got married at San Francesco Cloisters in the town. We wanted our reception at the hotel due to the beautiful views over the Bay of Naples. The reservations manager Giuseppe sat with us and discussed our wishes. Nothing was too much trouble and every single request was granted, making our day “a dream come true”. We paid an extra 20 euros a head for an evening reception and it was worth every penny to watch the sun set over the bay. The evening started with canapés and champagne cocktails (and fruit juices for the children) at 6pm on the terrace. We were ushered into the dining terrace at 7.30pm to a standing ovation and all of the guests clapping us into the reception. We were given a private section of the terrace with a fabulously decorated table. A six course dinner followed that blew our guests away. The food was exquisite and when we got to the wedding cake and champagne (all included in the price) we could barely fit any more in!

We would recommend the Grand Hotel Capodimonte without reservation for both a holiday and a magical wedding reception.

Previous reviews have mentioned the special treatment wedding parties received. Only one member of staff knew we were getting married for the first week of our stay so the “special treatment” we received was not due to this. If staff are treated with respect and courtesy then it is freely returned. All reviews are personal and subjective and should be seen as such. Our experience needed to be shared because it was faultless , judge for yourself.

The holiday got off to a bad start with a 4 1/2 hr delay at Manchester airport and instead of arriving at the hotel at approx 1800 it was midnight before we were checking in and so missed the whole first evening of our holiday. The drive from Naples to Sorrento was interesting to say the least. It was my first experience of Italian driving and it was not a pleasant one. Italian drivers show a complete lack of courtesy to other road users and the bikes are the worst. One tip - take care on zebra crossings as the drivers take absolutely no notice of them !
We went on a package with Thomas Cook and paid extra for a sea view - we were'nt disappointed with that ! The view from our balcony was truly amazing as were the views from the poolside terraces. There were always plenty of sunbeds available and the cascading pools were fantastic. Hotel itself was kept spotlessly clean, even the poolside toilet area was immaculate.
Food was very good without being outstanding and the service all round the hotel was first class. The resort itself was very busy but it was bound to be given the time of year we went. When we go again (and we will) we will probably go June or September time. Never having been to Italy before we decided to go on organised tours to Pompeii/Vesuvius and Capri. Well worth it but when we go again we will go on our own at our own pace. I would recommend this hotel and resort to anybody although from what I could see it doesn't cater at all for the 20-30 age group....no bad thing though .
