We had room 310 and the views were fantastic over the swimming pool , the ocean , Sorrento and the mountains.
The Hotel is on top of a steep hill , easy to walk down to the town but we never tried to walk up to the Hotel , just caught the free shuttle service from the train station to the Hotel.
We were book as half board , the evening meals are very good but the Veg is a bit overdone for my liking. After 2 weeks the menu was looking a bit repeatitive also.
The Staff are the best bit about this Hotel from Reception , Bus Driver , Restaurant , Bar and Chambermaids , the staff were usually smiling and even singing at times.Did not meet anyone Surly.

Room Tip: You need a room with a view. Some rooms have NO VIEWS at all so be careful.

Just returned back home from staying at the Gran Paradiso and i have to say we are missing it already. We asked for side sea view rooms and even though our friends got exactly that,we on the other hand got room 212,which looked out over the whole of Sorrento and beyond, our friends were gutted (ha ha) but were still pleased with their room even if it was a bit on the small size(room 214).Being that the hotel was up a very steep hill, and you definitely need to make use of the free shuttle bus,you will love the views and that was why we booked this hotel in the first place. The staff were always pleasant ( especially the bar man,who we always had a laugh with, dont know his name but he lives out in the Lubusse area) nothing was to much trouble, and when we had to inform the reception that our shower head had come off my partner had only just returned to our room when the maintainance man was there to fix it. We had clean towels every day,and our room was always spotless. The food in the restaurant was always good( the soup gorgeous) and even if i thought there was'nt much choice what i did order i enjoyed. Would i recomend this hotel..... Definitely.

Room Tip: always ask for sea veiw or side veiw room.

We stayed at this hotel from 31st August to 14th September 2012. This is without a doubt a superb hotel in a stunning location. What more could you want? The hotel itself is clean, comfortable and modern, within easy reach of the town centre (with or without the courtesy bus!) and the staff are second to none; they are all friendly and helpful and nothing is ever too much trouble. The food is plentiful and varied and the presentation of the food at dinner time was excellent.

For the intrepid explorers amongst you (like ourselves!) it is easy and cheap to get around on the local buses and trains.

We love the hotel, the people and the area - we will certainly be back. See you in 2014.

My Wife and I stayed at this hotel for 7 nights in late September.
The location is the best and worst aspect of this hotel. Best owing to stunning views from the pool area and the superior sea view rooms - worst because you are more or less completely dependant upon the free (excellent) shuttle bus service and it's timetable. The hotel is located at the top of a very long steep hill and whilst this means it is quiet and relaxed, if you want to get out and about, realistically you will need to take the bus.
We selected a superior sea view room with balcony and were not disappointed with the view and size of the room and the welcome air conditioning. However, the room could really have done with a bit of TLC in respect of the decor and seating area which was a bit tired and showing signs of wear and tear.
The same is true about the public areas which in our view were satisfactory but perhaps not up to the standard you would expect of a 4 star hotel. The whole place, including the dining room, just seemed a little dated to us.
We elected on the full board option but only had dinner in the hotel once. This was partly because the food was not up to the sort of standard we expected and partly because we wanted to experience the food on offer at the numerous good establishments in the town. In our view the dining experience at this hotel is more of a canteen than a restaurant where you feel somewhat like being processed by mass catering.Certainly the food gave that impression.
Whilst the breakfast experience is good in comparison, the head waiter was far more effective in ensuring all the chairs and cutlery were in the right place than monitoring the availablity of breakfast buffet options which frequently ran out.
All in all a bit of a mixed experience then. You are left with the impression that the hotel has so much more potential than it actually delivers.

Room Tip: In my opinion the superior rooms with a sea view and proper balcony are essential. Some of the rooms...

Recently returned from our holiday in this lovely Hotel. I travelled with friends and we had adjoining rooms 312 & 313 both of which had a lovely terrace overlooking the sea, Vesuvius, St Agnello and the mountains, at night this was a wonderful site. On a future visit I would request 311 only because it also looked out on Capri as well as all the above. We arrived late evening (thanks to 8hr delay by Thos Cook) and a very pleasant cold buffet awaited us. The rooms are comfortable, clean and perfectly adequate with plenty of storage, fridge, hair dryer etc. I cannot understand previous comment saying breakfast was boring, there was everything one could wish, several cereals, fresh fruit, tinned fruits, (prunes, apricots etc), yoghurt, several types of bread, cheese, ham, tomatoes, scrambled egg, bacon, sausages, croisannts, jams, marmalades and countless sweet cakes and biscuits. then of course Fruit Juices and choice of tea, coffee fresh to the table as well as a machine dispensing various coffees, chocolate etc. Cannot imagine what else one would require!!! Unfortunately we only seemed to have the time to spend one day at the pool and therefore lunch, but there was a good choice for this meal. Dinners were in our opinion exceptional for the majority of Hotels. The choice was very good with starter choice of salads, traditional Italian Pasta, good soup, great variety of main courses, (fish was especially good) fresh vegetables and a least 4 choices for dessert. We thoroughly enjoyed the Gala Night made special by great music and dancing and a fantastic Firework Display down in the Bay. The Staff in Bar and Restaurant very friendly and efficient. Mostly we found the Reception to be helpful and pleasant, one lady in particular seemed somewhat distant but that may have been a language problem. The shuttle was excellent, always on time and great at getting us to meeting points for excersions. All in all a Great Holiday at a Great Hotel, thank you to all the Staff.

Room Tip: Room 311 would be my first choice.

This was the last and longest stop on our mini tour of Italy. We stayed here for 7 nights and enjoyed our stay but certainly didn't feel this was a 4 star standard like we could get at home.

We arrived at the hotel mid afternoon and were fairly hungry by the time we got there. Check in was fast but not exactly friendly and we were shown to our room which was sea facing.

The rooms are nice enough, very spacious but would be better with double or king beds than pushing two singles together. The bathrooms are ok but the toilets don't seem to flush very well and the water pressure is very poor so the shower is more of a trickle. The rooms are at least modern though but do look a bit on the cheap side. We had a problem with the cleaners in that they would start just after 7 and most days could be heard banging about in the corridor, we called reception and nothing was done. Also, on our last night we had a duvet with no cover and a solitary sheet placed on top, was pretty revolting to be honest.

The service here is for the most part great, in fact had it not been for reception we would definitely rate it excellent. The staff in the restaurant are friendly and helpful as are those on the snack bar. Reception is a different story. The people who we checked in with didn't seem to care, they should be helpful, happy and courteous but were anything but. We asked another couple a few days later if they got passports back when they checked in and they did, we went and asked for ours and they were sitting on the desk in full view for everyone, we found that disgraceful. Also, we had a tripped booked one day which there was bad weather. We booked this trip through reception so we asked reception if it would go ahead. We were told to go on the shuttle to the bottom of the hill and see if they turn up. We did and ended up having to walk back up the hill to the hotel in torrential rain to have the receptionist call the tour operator to see what was happening, we were furious that she had been too lazy to do that in the first place.

There is a daily menu in the hotel as well as an a la carte if people choose for dinner. Most of the time there are four options for starter and main on each day. This took a little getting used to as although the food is ok it seems to get churned out in a sort of conveyor belt fashion. On one occasion our starter came before our drinks which was really bad we thought. The lunches were good. The breakfasts are a bit boring, there is a nice choice of cakes but these are pretty average. The waiters are really great and very nice as are the pool bar staff but one suggestion that might make it better is that the pool staff could possibly go round asking people if they wanted anything, wouldn't take much and is very appreciated in other hotels we have been to. Also, there is no atmosphere after dinner, a little bit of music in the bar area even during the day or some night time entertainment would go a long way.

The location of this hotel is great, its away from the center but not too far and has a shuttle service which is great and runs almost all day from morning to night. The views here are stunning at times. The hillside location is only a problem if you have to walk up the hill, that is a killer.

Lastly, have to mention the art if that's what you call it. Everyone spoke about it, whether it be about their room decor or just about the art dotted about the hotel. Nobody we spoke to had anything good to say about it in fact the general concensus from about 5 couples we spoke to is that it made the hotel loose its value as it made it look cheap.

Dear weephil76,

Thank you for taking the time to write about us on tripadvisor.com

I am sorry if some member of our Staff llooked lazy, also I do apologise if drinks arrived becofe your meal, this has been rectified as it was a new member of the restaurant Staff that he was on training.
I would like to apologise if our hotel did not let you feel the 4 stars standard, also beacuse we do expose, following your point of view some cheap art around the hotel public areas and rooms. That is for sure your opinion, because maybe your knowledge of art is very basic.

I have amended all the suggestions concerning the pool service and the entertaining, I will work hard in order to enhance our service in those fields.

I hope that you will be able to give us an other chance during your next visit to Sorrento.

Yours sincerely,

Alberto

Ok having never written a comment on Trip Advisor before I thought I should following our stay at the Art Gran Paradiso Hotel. I was aware of some of the negative comments on Trip Advisor prior to my holiday which I have to be honest was a little bit worrying however, we were fully aware of the location and are relatively fit so the hill location wasn't a problem and we welcomed the exercise. The location of the hotel was worth the walk because the views are stunning and we enjoyed being able to get away from the hustle and bustle of Sorrento. The staff were very personable and often offered lifts up and down the hill if they spotted us which was great and also demonstrated what a friendly team they were! The restaurant staff were also friendly and whilst we did eat out in an evening on a few occasions the food in the restaurant was good with varied menus. The restaurant was really pleasant with great views over the pool and bay. The drinks prices were very reasonable too and the bar offered cocktail of the day for 5 euros and a happy hour which were great value. We had lunch from the pool bar which was very good too! Coffee was served with lovely little Ameretto biscuits - gorgeous! We had booked a sea view room which was lovely with stunning views of the Bay of Naples and Vesuvius - every morning it was a pleasure to look out over the bay. As with many hotels in Sorrento some rooms are cliff facing and this is true of many of the 5 star hotels also, it's the location of Sorrento and many other resorts which are built on cliff top locations, so possibly holiday makers should be sure of what they are booking to avoid disappointment. The hotel Art Gran Paradiso is quite 'modern' and the art on display is quite abstract but it's something that if you find a bit unusual in the beginning it's something that you quickly get used to. If you want to stay at this hotel you need to be aware of its location before you go, there is a regular shuttle bus from the hotel to Sorrento which overcomes any problems with walking up the hill but of course as with many shuttle bus services you have to tie in with that schedule. It is a lovely, simply designed hotel and is very comfortable, the staff are very relaxed, helpful and friendly and in terms of value for money offers a great relaxing get away to relax and the hotel offers the choice to have the best of both worlds in Sorrento. One other thing to mention when you get to the bottom of the hill you don't have to turn right into Sorrento on the main road which is very busy traffic wise, you can turn right into Saint Agnello and walk into Sorrento the back way via tree lined strees which are very nice. Alternativley you could choose to stay in Saint Agnello which has a couple of bars and has a greeat wine bar offering an amazing range of Italian wines!! You can also pick-up the train in Saint Agnello rather than walk into Sorrento which is really handy! We really enjoyed our time at the Gran Paradiso and would definitely stay there again in a sea view room of course! We have lovely memories of our stay there.
