Had a very enjoyable stay at this hotel in May. Service excellent, food of high quality, well presented. Superb corner room with amazing views from the balcony. Pool area excellent with stunning views. Only downside was the lack of good quality evening entertainment which would have been appreciated as the town was half hour walk up a very steep hill if you miss the last bus at 11p.m.(which we did!)

Room Tip: Choose room with a good size balcony, preferably a corner.

A nice airy feel to this Hotel but beauty is only skin deep.
Read everything when checking in, there is a city tax charge added to your room when you check out.
The staff are very efficient and friendly and the hotel is clean, however because it is an Art hotel the management reserve the right to show tours around the hotel including your room, unless you tick a box on the check in form
Overall definitely not a four star hotel would struggle to make a 3 in my opinion.
And if you don't use the shuttle bus the taxi fares to and from town centre are a small mortgage....

Room Tip: the lower rooms are established, higher rooms may have a balcony but are small

Dear Esteemed Guest Bj3656,

Thank you for reviewing and describing the hotel on Tripadvisor.com

I am sorry to tell You that the city tax of Euro 1,50 per person per night (to be paied for a maximum of 7 nights), is imposed by the Sorrento Town Council and unfortuantely we can not do anything again this tax, that is not part of an hidden project of the "Art Hotel". We are surprised to read this, as Guests are always informed about this, and also this is mentioned everywhere (brochures, reservations and emails).

I would like to inform You that the room visit project, was just a test in orde to understand how to let Guests visit the art pieces in our hotel. This has been started as some Guests are interested in visiting the Art exposed all over the hotel.

We hope to have the chance to welcome you again in the Art Hotel in order to deserve the 4th star.

Best regards,

Alberto

Not quite sure how this hotel achieved it's 4 star status.
We were in a room at the back that looked out on to a patio area which we assume was for staff (there was no access for guests) one member of staff actually walked passed our window whilst we were in the room, perhaps privacy curtains may be a good idea? Bathroom VERY small and needed a refurb as did our room.
Breakfast incredibly mediocre and not what we have have experienced at other 4 star hotels.
The location, whilst offering stunning views, was not convenient and even though a shuttle bus is provided, there was a wide gap between the times you may want to go into town for dinner. Average cost of taxi from hotel was 15 euros into town, BUT beware relying on taxis to get back, we were charged 22 and 28 euros for a 10 minute journey. We tried to negotiate a price beforehand but unfortunately Sorrento taxi drivers are hardened (one of them mentioned the gear box would get a battering!!) and know that there is no other way to back to the hotel, the walk up the windy road is only for the very fit and brave and defintely not to be recommended at night!!
By far, the best thing about this hotel is the staff, they are friendly, attentive and very professional.

My wife and I have just returned from an eight day stay at this ideally located hotel with its panoramic view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius from the terraced pool. Sitting there in the evening watching the sun set behind the horizon of the sea with a cocktail is not to be missed.
The rooms are very clean, adequate, but not to 4 star standard in our view. The hotel is listed as adorned with art work, very modern but not to our taste.
The restaurant is large and neatly laid out, with ten crystal chandeliers. The waiting staff were extremely polite (especially to the ladies!) and very attentive. The food was reasonable and well presented (but I did not enjoy the squid which was listed on the menu as fish!) But, all in all the food was good, although portions were a bit on the small side for my appetite.
The hotel is high up on a steep hill (as described in previous reviews) but there was a shuttle bus to the town centre approximately every hour.
Our trip by ferry to Capri was canceled owing to poor weather conditions, but it gives us a good reason to return to this beautiful part of Italy another time. We recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: If you want a panoramic view of the bay and Mt Vesuvius then you will be better to pay extra for the...

This is a nice hotel but the rooms are little bare, save the slightly bizarre art work which decks the walls, still not complaining the rooms were adequate although perhaps not 4* quality. The other disappointing thing was that we did not get a room with a view, the reality is that very few rooms in the hotel have a view, so don't be misled into thinking that you will automatically get one, especially if you are not booking directly with the hotel, because chances are you won't. Regardless of the art work, the lack of view and the bare rooms the hotel was very pleasant. The food on the breakfast buffet was more than adequate and the dinner was generally good, although there isn't a great deal of choice. The staff were very friendly and willing to help and big plus is that you get FREE INTERNET (which although we didn't use is such a rarity now a days it deserves a mention). The hotel is a trek from the main town so you do have to time your days with the buses but they are fairly regular so that is ok :). The best bit about this hotel is being able to sit in the evening with a cocktail over looking the whole of sorrento, it is splendid. I am not sure I would visit again, but for a week this was a pleasant enough spot.

Room Tip: Definitely ring up directly if you want to get a room at the front of the hotel, trust me the view a...

I stayed at the Gran Paradiso Hotel during the second week of May 2013. I travelled alone and found myself in a twin room on the third floor with a balcony and sea view. The room was fine for single occupancy but could be a little lacking in space with two or more. The furniture and fittings were somewhat dated and the shower cubicle very compact. However i was ultimately quite happy with the room and had no cause for complaint. I didn't pay much attention to the art though you could see exhibits scattered around the hotel.

The hotel is indeed up a steep hill with regular shuttle buses throughout the day to drop guests off at the train station. I walked back up the hill five times in seven days which takes around 10 mins and walked down the hill six times (less than 10 mins to the bottom of the hill, another 15-20 mins to the train station / centre of Sorrento). The walk into town is along a busy road on a narrow pavement but is nothing too onerous.

The views from my balcony and from the pool were quite stunning. I would recommend a sea view room but it's not the end of the world if you don't want to pay the extra as the view of Mount Vesuvius across the Bay of Naples is a constant feature of being in Sorrento.

As a fussy eater (and a vegetarian) i am always slightly apprehensive at what hotels plan to serve up for the evening meal. I need not have worried as the food was well presented and very tasty. There is a menu with around four choices for starters and four for the main course with at least one option in each suitable for vegetarians. Breakfast was the usual toast, scrambled eggs, pastries, cereals, cheese etc. The staff were quite pleasant and helpful throughout my stay.

I managed day trips to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Mount Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast, Capri and Naples. I would suggest you take the trains, buses and ferries for these trips which are all fairly straightforward to do independently and much cheaper than an organised tour.

Trains for Pompeii (c.35 mins) and Herculaneum (c.50 mins) depart fairly frequently from Sorrento at just over 4 Euros for a return ticket. The bus up to the summit of Mount Vesuvius (20 Euros return including entry to the volcano summit) can be caught from outside Ercolana-Scavi train station which is the same stop for the ruins at Herculaneum (easy to do these two in one day).

An all day SITA bus ticket to Amalfi cost 7.60 Euros with buses departing opposite the train station at Sorrento. It is worth sitting on the right hand side of the bus as the views are exceptional as you approach the town of Positano. It is also worth noting that the buses do get full and can be somewhat uncomfortable if you're stood up for an hour or more. From Positano (a must see town by the way) you can catch a ferry to Amalfi (8 Euros one way) instead of taking the bus. There is a local bus to take you up to the town of Ravello (also worth a trip) from Amalfi.

I found the ferry ticket to Capri quite expensive at 35 Euros (return) for a 25 minute crossing. A walk to the Gardens of Augustus from Capri and the chairlift from Anacapri to the highest point on the island are both worth the effort for the breathtaking views.

I would recommend to my friends that they visit Sorrento and would also consider staying at the Gran Paradiso again myself.
