Booked a week beforehand - maybe there's a lesson in that. From the brochure the hotel looked fine but what a ghastly room with a frightful view. The hotel (classed as a four star) was three star but the room was one star and despite asking on several occassions we were unable to upgrade. If you are staying here you must insist on a north facing room with sea view. The pool was good and there were stunning views of the bay with Vesuvio as a back drop. The hotel is situated about 10 to 15 mins from the bus/rail station (aging courtesy minibus - no aircon) and another 5 minutes walk to the main square - Piazza Tasso. No bus back to the hotel between 18:20 and 23:00 so if you miss the 18:20 you have to wait until 11pm and if you miss 11pm a taxi is 16 - 20 Euro. The food was acceptable and occasionally good but fish was from frozen stock-why? Sorrento is a great place to visit but not in the last 2/3 weeks of August as this is when Italians take their holidays so a 30 minute bus ride to Positano resulted in an hour long return, standing all the way. The locals say the best time to visit is November and despite our problems we'd visit in Nov and stay in a better town centre hotel.

Dear McHooligan,

Thank you for posting your thought.
Unfortunately I am unable to see your name to check if the reservation was made for a sea view room, but i can assure you that if it was for a sea view room the reservation was honoured.
If you had a room without view is because you booked from the catalogue a standard room.

The sea view rooms are limited and the rate is different

To answer you about the bus between 18:20 and 23, there is the bus coming back to the hotel at 20:50 from supermarket pollio.

I can assure you that the best time to visit Sorrento is not November; the period you stayed was during national holidays and if we had the opportunity to give you an alternative room it would have been our pleasure, but the hotel was fully booked.

I hope you can understand our situation, I remain at your complete disposal for any further information.

Best regards,

Alberto Colonna

Stuart & Adrienne Muirhead, Ayr, Scotland. August 2008
Arrived at 10pm and were given a room little bigger than a zero rated boarding house. No air, no room to pass each other far less unpack. Manager said it was only room available until next morning. After complaining vociferously, he gave us a large room with corner balcony for one night and we moved into a very nice room next morning. Otherwise, the hotel was excellent, the staff could not be faulted in any way, especially the restaurant and bar staff, and the food was good. Bar prices comparable to town prices. Hotel is on a hill and unsuitable for walking, but free shuttle bus service is frequent. Lovely views, large pool, sun terrace has free loungers and ample room for guests
Would certainly recommend this hotel for a relaxing holiday.

firstly let me list all the positives about the hotel of which there are many,we had a room on the top floor at the front and the view across the bay was absolutely fantastic although the room furniture was a bit old ,the room was very clean and the maids always did a really good cleaning job . The pool was very good size ,ideal for anyone who likes some serious swimming, also there always seemed plenty of sunbeds for everyone, although they did seem prone to collapsing if you went down too heavy on them,at first I thought the integral adjustable shades on sunbeds were quite good but as the temperature rose to 37degrees in our second week, not everyone likes to sit in direct sun all day, there was a big need for some umbrellas round the pool.
The staff were on the whole friendly and helpful,I must make a special mention for guiseppe the head waiter he was always a good laugh.
We thought the food was pretty average,Im not a great fan of continental breakfasts, also the fruit juices were rubbish so was the coffee, some mornings the croissants were stale and normally if we go half board my breakfast sees me through till evening meal ,but not here, every day we were hungry at lunch time,so over the fortnight had to spend an extra 350 euros on lunchtime snacks .
With regard to the evening meals they were ok but, much as I like pasta ,we got fed fed up of eating it most of the time, and a lot of the vegetables were out of tins and not fresh.
We did not enjoy having to rely on a courtesy bus to get out from the hotel ,and a right old banger that was too.
The hotel could also have done a lot more to inform their guests about the local attractions, although the staff were very helpful if asked about information,we felt there could have been lots of literature about the places to visit, rather than just one photocopy sheet of the the bus and train timetables
One thing that was very noticeable to us was that at times the hotel seemed more like an old peoples home, alright a couple of nights a week they had a singer ,but I dont go away to listen to an engelbert humperdink soundalike,
Even allowing for the negatives it did not spoil our stay here, but would say this hotel is 3 star standard , generally it needs to raise its game in a lot of areas to be called 4 star.

I have never written a review for trip advisor before but having read some previous reviews felt that I had to do so. I went to the Gran Paradiso this year for the second time and it was even better than the first time two years ago.

The hotel is spotlessly clean with rooms being cleaned and towels changed every day. The food is excellent, but Italian breakfasts generally are not what we have here in the Uk. There is no fried breakfast, but a good continental style breakfast with a choice of cereals, breads, cold meats etc. The dinner is excellent, the first course is a self service salad choice, the second course is a choice of two pasta dishes, risotto or gnocchi, a creamy soup, consomme and a vegetarian option. Similarly there are at least five courses to choose as a main. The dessert is either cake, fresh fruit, ice cream or cheese and biscuits and our party of five enjoyed each meal. Apart from the salad course it is all waiter service and Guiseppe and his team of waiters were really friendly, efficient and attentive. The gala dinner held each Tuesday is great fun.

The bar area is pleasant and well stocked and Michele, Nella and Guisseppe ensure that all guests are well looked after. They also serve the lunches on the terrace. However if you would like to visit Sorrento the a courtest bus runs several times a day. Additionally if you book an excursion that does not coincide with the times of the bus, then the bus will come down to pick you up, Mariano's driving skills and patience are awesome.

If you are looking for a lively holiday then the gran paradiso and maybe Sorrento is not for you. The only entertainment is a rather cheesy singer twice a week who is nonetheless really entertaining with a wide repetoire of songs. So, if you are looking for a relaxing, quiet holiday being well looked after, with excellent food and wine and fantastic views then it certainly is.

Our party consisted of two fourty year olds, two twenty year olds and a teenager and we are all looking forward to booking again for next year.

The Gran Paradiso is the most relaxing hotel that we have ever stayed at and would not hesitate to recommend it to those who want to get away from it all. If your idea of heaven Playa de las Americas or Benidorm then it is certainly not for you.

stayed at the Gran Paradiso Hotel in May, 2008. It was a very relaxing experience.
This hotel had everything you can ask for. It has a very wonderful view i ever seen.
The staff is friendly and willing to answer all of your questions. The rooms are clean and fresh and the chambermaids were there to assist you for every need. The beds are very comfortable, and they give you plenty of pillows.
